I heard this when I first started and it’s been very helpful “It’s much easier to over water than it is to underwater.” The worst that happens if you under water is you get a little droop. It’s super obvious and easily remedied. Over water, chokes out your plants, increases molds and fungus, increases humidity, stunts growth, stresses the plant, weakens the plant. It’s always better to aim for slightly under watered than over. I always try to get my medium completely dry before I water, and then even still I’ll wait a day or two.

Thanks as I prepare my micro grow environment I have had watering on my mind. I haven't grown anything hydroponically since 1994. Hopefully in May that will change when I move to Illinois.
I've got to give the SIP system a try. Watering really can be tricky and you won't know how much poor watering effects overall yield until you get a few runs right and a few runs wrong in regards to watering. Glad you've adapted and learned as you progressed.
A great video Chad and thank you for sharing it with us. It is difficult for us new growers to know when to water, otherwise there wouldn't be so much content on it. I'm actually considerin weighin my pots to see if I can come up w/some sort of system to help me not over water. Thx again.
The more I play with other systems (soil vs living soil vs coco ect.) the more I am finding they want their own, slightly modified watering schedule. I thin another piece that makes it tricky is root size. A 3 gallon pot gets watered much different in the seedling stage compared to mid flower..... but it's the same sized pot.... then you can get deeper and calculate the VPD and transpiration rates of the foliage, because this also greatly effects water uptake from the root zone..... so yeah, it can be a little more nuanced than - just add some water. There is a lot of personal preference out there. Ah man, thank you very much for the kind words. I think it is awesome that you are finding benefit in the videos. Party on and happy gardening! Cheers :)
I like the weight test, but it doesn't always work. For instance, if you've used sand in your soil it will always feel heavy, or of course in non-potted plants. I use the finger in the pot dry 1" deep it's time to water. TIP FOR NEW GROWERS: After you overwater, let each plant dry out until the leaves start wilting the next time so as to avoid root rot long-term. As a new grower, you probably overwatered it, am I right? Ya, let it dry out to "fix" it.
You are correct about different compositions of soils having different weights. Fox Farm Ocean Forest is heavier than Fox Farm Ocean Frog ect. So getting a new pot fully saturated is a good way to start out with any new medium. I agree with you too about finding the line of where the leaves start to wilt in the beginning and then stay just before that line with your waterings. Its all practice and observation.
Something that helped me with trying to not over water in living soil was using a pump sprayer keeping top layer moist and doing my heavier watering every few days to once a week. Plus I figured the pressure helps drive some oxygen into top layer as well. ✌🏻💚✌🏻💚 Two great homie with great trustworthy knowledge 🙏🏼🌬💨💨💨😶🌫️
Trial and error. Always a process but that is rad you devised a formula that works for your living soil. Big ups SVTG, thank you for adding to the conversation :)
💯! This was The absolute toughest thing when switching over from synthetic to organic And from a heavily aerated coco mix to trying to build a living soil !!! I’d never seen a heavily overwatered plant until then ! Lol Great Episode Bro 🙏💪🤜
Man, I've made mistakes by not adjusting my routine when going between soil to coco. We get stuck in our ways sometimes that we forget that we know better. lol.
Right on, I appreciate that. Hopefully there was a little benefit for ya. Do you like to use rock wool, hydro reservoirs? Its fun hearing about other styles.
I use rdwc clay hydroton as my medium so the water carries all the nutrients and oxygen. The solution is circulated through the whole system as well as air stones in each grow site
My pleasure. I think the majority of us have done that and I know ALL of us have goofed up a time or two with a watering. It's all part of the process, but these measuring cups really make it easier to nail down the right amount of water for the right stage of growth. Keep having fun and thank you for watching :)
I use a sump pump with a hose and a wand and i know every 10 seconds is 4 liters of water. So when i water i know what count to reach b4 the plant is done. If i got bigger plants they get 10 seconds smaller plants or plants that need less water get 7 or 5 or 3 seconds. That way i can water everything at once and not have to water every other day because you got different strains running they wont all run or drink the same.
It sounds like you have dialed in your garden, that is great. When I worked in the commercial facility, I watered in a similar manner. It was many big beds with multiple plants. But I knew the flow rate of my pump and how much it released each second. Like you, I was able to use time to water. That is awesome, I bet your garden looks great. Thank you for sharing :)
Scale tech...max and mins are easy to determine ...grams of H2O needed to maintain the perfect amount of water in a controlled environment in a given time frame and specific plant structure/size...🤔..easy Oh Canada 🇨🇦
Scale tech would be a great way to go as well. Measurements breed consistency. Consistency is key to figuring out the right amount. More roots, less roots, humid, not humid, hot, cool, ect. All can contribute to the amount of transpiration and root uptake. Oh Cananda :) Salute to you Major!
To accurately weigh your pot.. use a scale !.. seriously... weigh it and write that shit down.. then you have some actual way to know when it's " 50% " lighter. ( bathroom scale.. kitchen/shipping scale.. etc.. )
Great suggestion, data helps and that is a great benchmark. It's not subjective like our tactile feel can be. Then as time goes, you can lift the pot, guess the weight, put it on the scale and see how close you are getting to being accurate every time.
Water your plant until proper run off and wait until it’s dry. Keep a bone dry test bucket filled with dry soil as a guide. GROWBOSS and Welcome to the Grow Tent break this down well.
One thing you need to be cautious about when using dry back, is the fluctuating EC of the root zone. In coco, complete dry backs are bad and to be avoided. In living soil complete dry backs can be detrimental to microbial life. In soil with synthetic feed, the concern is excess nutrients in the root soil crystalizing as the dry back occurs. Once water hits that concentrated crystal of nutrient, it can be a hot shot to the roots. Watering, it really is an art. Thank you for the tips, I will check those guys out. Cheers!
Not dumb at all :) When I switched back from coco to soil, I was watering like it was coco until it clicked in my head. I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Cheers!
How you feel about those cheap plastic automatic watering bulbs/globes, Chad? I guess it's better to spread over the entire surface. But it might be nice if you're out for a few days.
In a pinch they can help. If I had a 3 gallon or larger pot, I'd want a few of them spaced evenly, but I would prefer to hand water if possible. Like you mentioned, it is a good idea if you need to be gone for a day or two. Cheers :)
Yes, this video can help you. The amount you water will be determined by the root size and the pot size. Little plants need less water. Bigger plants need more of it and usually more frequently.
@ChadWestport thank you so much! I was gifted a plant taller than me! It's a hybrid and I'm learning as I go because I've never grown before. I'm finding bud rot, so I'm cutting out any buds that are turning brown. Any tips other than removing foliage so that it gets more light?
@@lilystarr226 Airflow is important to preventing bud rot. Also keep an eye oh the humidity with the lights on and off. Large swings and/or high humidity in the tent also increases the chances of that. Last, genetics are important. Some are more mold resistant than others. Good luck!

There are a few answers here. If planting in native soil, it has a way of balancing depending on where it sits in the soil pyramid. In some cases, native soil is not desirable, so people will dig large holes, but fill it with their own custom soil blend. And then there are raised beds. Plants outdoors deal with more evaporation and wind erosion but the moisture levels in the soil can be preserved by adding a mulch layer to the top of the soil. In most cases, growers start the seedlings inside where they develop a decent root system that will help their quest for water when moved outside. More roots, the more resilient they will be to variables. If directing sowing into the soil outside, make sure the top soil has a bit of moisture in it for a few inches around the seedlings. Progressively make the circle larger as it grows and the root system develops. Cheers :)
That is a common blend for coco and perlite. You will find many bags of 70/30 out there. You should be good. Coco can handle more frequent waterings than soil, but you may need to supplement some calcium or cal/mag. Enjoy :)
Not completely accurate on the part about if it's dry today and you watered yesterday you didn't water enough. Or vice versa. It's really depending on the size of your pots, how much space the roots are taking up in ratio to medium, And how much water the plant uptakes per day. Some people have to water every day, Versus some people water every 3 days. Point being if you watered yesterday but it's dry today then maybe you have too small of a pot. Because in the case you think you're might watering enough you may end up overwatering the next day Because your plant is borderline root bound.
Good points, I think this is what he was getting at. If you need to water everyday, it may be a good time to transplant up. Plants with a developed root system will drink faster than a young one. Many factors to compound into making a decision. Watering sounds simple, but there are many variables. Thank you for mentioning a few more. Cheers :)
Not everyone is born knowing and I think there was some pretty good advice in there for people who might not know the fundamentals or experience analysis paralysis. I'm glad you've got watering down, happy gardening to ya :)
Great question. If you have the chance to transplant, that is always my favorite solution. Other than that, you need to let it dry. Possibly consider foliar sprays if the leaves start to show deficiencies. Keep the room warmer than usual, but not scorching. Plants drink less in cold temps. Thank you for offering your solution as well, it is a good one :)

SPARTAN!
Is the man!
I always use a wet / dry cycle in living soil and have never had an issue.
Give it a good soak when its dry and let it dry back before watering again.
This can affect your soil microbial community, but they will also increase again when watered.
Smart pots can really help a beginner .I switched to them just last year from 34 years of 5 gallon buckets .
We get stuck in our ways sometimes that we forget that we know better. lol.
water does the trick for me. every other beverage seems to have unnecessary crap in it :P
Brawndo FTW
Much 💚💚💚💚💚💚
Right back at ya brother. Keep the garden green and the bowl lit :)
Awesome show bro 🤙🏽
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
I don’t grow in soil but I watched anyway good video
Right on, I appreciate that. Hopefully there was a little benefit for ya. Do you like to use rock wool, hydro reservoirs? Its fun hearing about other styles.
I use rdwc clay hydroton as my medium so the water carries all the nutrients and oxygen. The solution is circulated through the whole system as well as air stones in each grow site
@@GardenGangster That sounds rad. Its not the easiest system to run, but with difficulty comes rewards.
Ramp up the watering🎉❤ no rootboosters needed😅 great Channel 🎉
Thank you for watching and commenting :) Cheers!
SIP's for the win!
I'm a big fan of the AutoPot system. True that ;)
Thank you! Lost 2 grows last year due to overwatering.❤
My pleasure. I think the majority of us have done that and I know ALL of us have goofed up a time or two with a watering. It's all part of the process, but these measuring cups really make it easier to nail down the right amount of water for the right stage of growth. Keep having fun and thank you for watching :)
Good 1 !!!!
thanks
Scale tech...max and mins are easy to determine ...grams of H2O needed to maintain the perfect amount of water in a controlled environment in a given time frame and specific plant structure/size...🤔..easy
Oh Canada 🇨🇦
Scale tech would be a great way to go as well. Measurements breed consistency. Consistency is key to figuring out the right amount. More roots, less roots, humid, not humid, hot, cool, ect. All can contribute to the amount of transpiration and root uptake. Oh Cananda :) Salute to you Major!
Nice! 👊😎
Cheers!
Nutrients at night right at light off
New to the channel. Love the content. Maybe we can touch base.
Thank you for the kind words. Definitely happy to chat, hit me up on IG, are you on there at all?
Great advice 👌
Spartan Grown is a smart dude. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment :)
Thank you!!! I've been struggling with this, as dumb as it sounds. Lol.
Cheers :)

word to that Chris, thank you buddy!
I was given a cannabis plant please, how do I water a plant in soil with perlite in it? Do I give it regular water?
Good luck!
What is the music on the intro? Thanks
The artist is Fanu. He is from Finland and has a label called Lightless Recordings. The track is called Going Home and can be found here - fanu.bandcamp.com/track/going-home
What about us who plant in the ground?
Cheers :)
What about coco 70/30 perlite i feel like i overeatered just by plant look. Water to runoff but plant haha well plant a talks..

Cheers :)
The thing at the door keeps putting me off concentrating. Looks like a massive head. Move the boxing thing dude
haha, yeah, that has been removed. Thank you for watching. Cheers!
You can’t over water 💦 DWC. 😊
Hahahaha, you aren't wrong. I love it, thank you :)
Common sence advice . If you think this is educational you been smoking too much of what you are growing .
Not everyone is born knowing and I think there was some pretty good advice in there for people who might not know the fundamentals or experience analysis paralysis. I'm glad you've got watering down, happy gardening to ya :)
awe chad, its chadd!!!!!!
2nd time is a charm!
With you, it's always a charm :) Thank you for coming back to visit and watch. Cheers!
love the tunes! I have a question: what do you do if you OVER water? he never said. 🤷♀️ I generally end up transplanting. 🙌✌
Great question. If you have the chance to transplant, that is always my favorite solution. Other than that, you need to let it dry. Possibly consider foliar sprays if the leaves start to show deficiencies. Keep the room warmer than usual, but not scorching. Plants drink less in cold temps. Thank you for offering your solution as well, it is a good one :)
remember to not show plants and do a disclaimer that it is for 18+. I'll be tuning in Chad
An honor to have you stop by, thank you. The videos on this channel with plants instantly got flagged and you know how that goes as a content creator.
@@ChadWestport it’s been the worst bro. Our channels subs have been crushed from like 2 grand a month down to less than 500. All because we want to help people get licenses and change the law. Still need some commercial grower talent in Illinois and beyond if you know people.
I respect people like you helping us new growers and making growing easier so we can spread the culture and legalize it everywhere hopefully 🪴
Thank you very much for saying so. I'm glad that new growers like yourself are hungry for knowledge and want to improve what they are doing. Gardening is fun, because there will always be something to learn, but once you understand the basics, everything is just fine tuning. I am happy to help and it makes me joyed to know this content is helping someone grow. Cheers :)
@@ChadWestport yes especially that cannabis is now legal where i live in germany
