    The authentic detail in this, hair cuts, clothes and the feeling of living for the moment because tomorrow might not come, is stunningly perfect in this. It's one of the best things ever done.

      I still say “I ask you!” all the time. When I notice it’s a tad embarrassing, however it’s an accepted part of my lexicon.
      Apparently.

      Nonsense. The standard of tv is generally far higher now than in the 80s and 90s. But then you were young and optimistic, now you are a grumpy old git without hair, most of your teeth and evidently no critical faculty.

    How lovely to find this. I just took a chance today as the book was lent to me years ago and only read it once. 4 days ago I started reading it once more and am pleased to find the film is nearly word for word the same. Good stuff, never saw it in England ( not likely to see it here on Thai TV either.) Many thanks JS.

    Jennifer Ehle is quite a character here. Can't understand why Oliver is infatuated with someone like Calypso. She is very selfish and shallow. Completely self-centered.

      The incidental music is good, too.

    Can you imagine Rik Mayall & Ade Edmondson watching The Camomile Lawn together? Rik would be drooling over Aunt Helena (Felicity Kendal); whilst Vyv/Ade would no doubt be lusting after Calypso, because she's a blonde Jennifer!

      No incest. Just the Coast Guard. Everyone else just treated Sophy as a little kid. The rest of it is just hopeless English 'love' making.

  • @alphabetaxenonzzzcat
    @alphabetaxenonzzzcat 5 років тому +4

    The two female leads in this(Tara Fitzgerald and Jennifer Ehle) are so hot!
    Beside that, this a very powerful drama with some strong stuff in there(the pervy uncle, incest, near rape, spousal abuse, wartime, etc.). So daring. Back when Channel 4 did that kind of thing. Got really high ratings at the time and a lot of controversy. It just wouldn’t get made nowadays.
    Love the music as well.
    A young Rebecca Hall as Sophie. Great cast : Felicity Kendall, Paul Eddington(now sadly gone), Tara Fitzgerald(who had a pretty busy year when this game out, what with Hear My Song, The Black Candle and Six Characters in Search of an Author), Jennifer Ehle(before Pride and Prejudice) and Toby Stephens(before he was a Bond bad guy).

    I really enjoy dramas but having stuck this one out to the end I didn't think it was worth it at all. Most of the characters don't develop enough to make the journey worthwhile. A lot of them are very unlikeable. And they remain unlikeable, and get away with it. If you have a strong moral conscience you'll be left drained in the end by how cold and heartless almost everyone really is.

    Over-fondly remembered series from three decades ago - about almost nothing in particular with no great ending but hey it's a period piece, it's set in WW2 and there's a few nice naked women to divert attention from the terminal dullness of the script.
