- The unknown Spinalonga of Attica which received more than 100,000 refugees from Asia Minor
The thousands of passengers who daily cross the Perama-Salamina route by ferry, pass a short distance from an enigmatic island with plenty of greenery and scattered deserted buildings, whose windows remain wide open and the roofs are half-demolished. Few, however, know the history of. Its ancient name was "Great Pharmacy", but today it is called "Agios Georgios" from the small church at its edge, which has been built on the ruins of an ancient church.
The church is built on the ruins of an early Christian church from the 8th century AD. A smaller one was built on top of it in the 14th century and in 1865 the church was renovated and expanded, taking its current form. Every day the women went and lit the candles of the church and on the eve of the feast they cleaned and whitewashed the small temple, while the last time they were allowed to go was in 1970.
There were some indications, based on written sources, that there was a strong possibility that the tomb of the ancient Circe was located on the island of St. George. This fact led Errico Schliemann to investigate the island, but he did not manage to locate the specific burial monument. However, there is a version that the original early Christian church was rebuilt on top of it.
The history of the mysterious island of about 300 acres located in the north of the Saronic Gulf, between Perama and Salamis is known as the "Spinaloga of Piraeus" or "hell of Argosaronic" or "island of madmen".
In 1865, a sanatorium was established in Agios Georgios for the isolation and treatment of outbreaks of infectious diseases, mainly cholera. The passengers of the ships coming from epidemic areas were initially taken there and had to be quarantined, staying for up to 20 days! The plagues of 1884, 1892, 1900, 1911 and 1913 were dealt with in Agios Georgios.
From December 1918 to April 1919, with the end of World War I, approximately 6,500 men who had been captured by the Germans were interned in Görlitz, Germany.
The first wave of refugees came in 1919 and the conditions of movement of the displaced were inhumane and miserable.
While in 1924 he accepted on this small island more than 100,000 refugees from Asia Minor for purification. The mass movements of the Greek populations started first from the regions of the Pontus and the Caucasus.
The refugees traveled for weeks in dirty ships, crowded into the holds without food and were exposed to all kinds of infections and diseases. For the ports of destination, they were considered a "sanitary bomb" since they carried diseases, even dead, whose relatives did not want to part with them. Thus they sought salvation in the motherland but when they arrived at the port of Piraeus they were obliged to remain isolated in the local disinfection stations, in order to be checked for possible diseases.
The last case of cholera was reported in the fall of 1947 from a ship with 620 passengers and 42 people who arrived by air from Egypt where a cholera epidemic had broken out. While in 1947 - 1960 the island was granted to the annex of the Public Psychiatric Hospital from where it acquired the name "The Island of the Crazy".
In 1967 the island of Agios Georgios passed under the jurisdiction of the Navy and in 1983 it is no longer an island, as it was embanked and joined with the island of Salamina.
