Ray Flacke is like Picasso, completely unpredictable and fearlessly original. A joy to experience!
Austin City Limits was all about music in those days
Lots of good pickers in that band. My fiddlin buddy calls Ricky's 5 -string electric mandolin the "Hamstercaster". Too bad today's country radio doesn't play good music.
They sure as hell don't. They play the absolute drivel that they call "country music" nowadays(Minus Sturgill Simpson, and maybe 2 or 3 others who play actual country music and not the crap pop music they call "Country" these days(and the last 25 years or so tbh. It's ALL the ABSOLUTE DRIZZLING FUCKING SHITS.(To borrow a great saying/term from the wrestling business.) which is simply AWFUL pop music w/ an acoustic guitar and maybe a little bit of fiddle, or the mandolin. It's all SO depressingly bad, homogenized, oversaturated, over produced, cookie cutter, mass produced assembly line DRIVEL. Long live TRUE COUNTRY MUSIC. Jimmy Rogers, Hank, Waylon, Guy, Townes, George, Buddy, Bob Wills, Buck, to name ONLY A FEW absolute LEGENDS that're rolling over in their graves.
@@stephenjones1488 As a country station jock I'll tell ya...the artists you mentioned are classified as "Classic Country", what I play is "Todays Country", or "Progressive Country". Along with sprinklings of Classic. It is whats popular with our target demographic.
That second Ray Flacke solo at this live show is really out in the stratosphere. He keeps it pure country but sends it out into surreal territory. Not an easy task. One of the greatest country guitarists there ever was.
You're so right. The combination of technical mastery and creativity in that 2nd solo is absolutely mind blowing. Incredible.
No doubt, both solos give me goosebumps every single time I watch this video.
There are so many things about these fantastic Ray solos. Just mentioning one, in the first solo, does anyone else wonder how in its very beginning, he forms a chord, then does a descending run during most of which his fingers don’t seem to be moving??? I see they do at the end of it, but the run is practically over by that time! Guitar work brilliant throughout!
Help, sounds like some bald guy is raping a chicken with his guitar through some kind of digital Time Machine. Best sound ever
Oh, to have been at this show! Legendary, especially the incomparable Ray Flacke.
I knew Ray in London when he played with Meal ticket, fabulous player, and yeah, that second solo is off the charts.
I can't get enough of this!. Ray Flacke is playing the hell outta that guitar. Get it son!
I love this song. In my estimation the Englishman guitarist (Ray Flacke) played the most aggressive solo ever played by a country band. I can't get enough!!!!!
My dad blasted this one in our living room when I was 4. I'm blasting it today for my young son. He loves it.
Tiny Moore played electric mandolin and fiddle for Hag and the Strangers! I have always loved Ricky Skaggs! Real Country boys and girls! 💙
That steel guitar player looks at Ray Flacke just as approvingly as I do. Was fortunate to see him live with Skaggs in 1980 and I’ve been a fan since.
Who-eee!!,...ain’t no slouches allowed!!! Y’all better have six fingers on each hand to be in Ricky’s band!!
Incredible, isn’t it? I have the good fortune to play with an authentic country guitar player. Sometimes I’ll nearly mess up from listening to him. It’s a superior approach to playing the guitar, in my humble bass-playing opinion.
Flacke is great but Ricky shreddin on the "Mandlar" Jaw Dropping
Holy crap, this is great! Hadn't heard this song in forever then it popped in my head as I was thinking about the term 'raisin' and searched for it. Found this version -- what a treasure.
This Man Is A True Gentleman , I Was Working As A Security Guard About 1988 At A Holiday Inn in KCMO , Mr Skaggs Was Staying There. He Got up Early one Morning And Ask If I Had Seen A Car come For Him , And Since I Had Not We Talked About His Music And MY Family , Before His Ride Came, And When it Did We Shook Hands And He Was Off. What A Gentleman , What A Star.
Yeah, but that was before he knew you capitalized every word in a sentence 😁
( Just kidding, of course 😉)
Flacke's cooking while Skaggs is smoking!! Lord what a combo
Ricky and Ray bending those guitar strings awesome
In the early 80’s Ricky’s music was country, bluegrass and rockabilly. He was great doing this sound. He set the bar for Dwight, Marty and others to follow.
You said it! Both he and Marty Stuart got their start in the biz as children. Both of them learned mandolin as their first instrument.
I am from another country, but I love country music. I've always loved Ricky's music. He is talented. He plays gospel too.
Real country music.
Ray Flacke is jaw dropping
When I was a kid I always thought he was saying don't get a fuzzy raisin
Ray Flacke plays the ever loving shit out of that guitar and Ricky always had as a great band!
No kiddin'. Ray does the best electric guitar lead solo in country history here on his second solo in this live piece from the '70s. It's truly epic.
@@MrSophbeau This is actually from 1981, not the seventies. But it is indeed truly epic!
@@MDavidG1 Thanks for the correction. In either decade, Mr Flacke delivers the country goods. Picker extraordinaire! Takes it to another level while keeping it country.....hard to do.
That WAS REAL Country music. Lol
Dang! I am from BOSTON and the 1st time I saw this on TV, I was HOOKED. Every one was "in the Zone". I could listen and/or watch this 10 times a day. Ray Flacke RULES.
To me that is tops! He had the dream team band and the strength to lead it.
Anyone that don't like this has a problem !! I could listen to this for 10 more minutes haha
Anybody don't like this, they just aint right. Plain and Simple. But I'm gonna pray for em anyway. They need help. 😅
Does that little mandocaster have a b bender?😳 ray Is one of the greats
Let's see any of the dudebro "country" queefs match it
A tribute song to the California raisins. 🍇
Like ta keep my raisins under me.
I’ve watched this video over and over. And over. Ray and Ricky’s blazing creative off the cuff leads leaves me in total awe! Talk about God given talent! I mean who plays like that😮 Unbelievable !
@Rickyskaggsofficial I am from Texas. You know my son Casey James. He took me backstage to meet you when you were in Dallas around 6-7 years ago. He first met you back stage at the Opry. (You were both playing that evening.) We both have been and will be life long fans. God bless you Ricky!
One of my top favorite Country songs, back when Country music was Country music.
I recorded this on my VCR back in the early ‘80’s and it’s my favorite guitar pickin song of Mr. Skaggs. 🙏🏼👍🏻👍🏻
This one's pretty good, but I like Country Boy better for pickin' :)
That’s some great pickin also. I just like what he does on that little electric guitar.
It's actually a 5 string solid body electric mandolin with a pull string device. When he pushes the neck down it pulls one of those strings up in pitch, like a pedal steel guitar. Lotta twang.
guitbanger1 Thanks! I don’t know much about types of mandolins or guitars, I thought it was a baby Fender. I just like the sound and his playing it.
So much mojo. Great performance!
Ricky, we are waiting for song LIKE THIS!
My mom had this album in 1982 when I was 8 years old! She played it all the time! Vinyl all the way! Also I love the Flatt and Scruggs version!!! Cuz I'm a country baby!!!!!😁💞
One of the best Songs from Ricky and his Band
GO RAY GO!!!!!
Always as good as ever..My wife loves his music
Knew Ray from London, always was a monster picker, that second solo is of the charts,we did the same circuit in london
This band with Ray Flacke was incredible. Ricky's music seem to lose it's bite after Ray left. In my opinion, he's never approached the quality of those first 2 lps on Epic Records(Waitin' For The Sun To Shine & Highways and Heartaches).
What about 1985's "Country Boy"? (from the 1984 album of the same name)
ua-cam.com/video/l_QheuTi8Q8/v-deo.html
He also did "Uncle Pen" (originally by Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys) the year before (from 1983's Don't Cheat In Our Hometown)...

We r not above our raisins here in KY!
When I was little I thought he was singing " dont get a fuzzy raisin" . Now my mom and sister always say it
Wrote a song about raisins !? Whoda thunk.
Ray flacke.was something else on telecaster.guitar guitar players..probably the best..rj
This is one of My favorite entertainers of all time and the music he plays is My favorite
Thank you so much dear, you seems to be a huge fan, where are you writing from
Good old fashioned country 😊
Great Job, I love your singing.
Get it son
Such a catchy Country Rock choon!! One listen & it's stuck in your head for a long time & this live version is even better than the normal single!! Great musicians.....great song!! 🤪
THIS ‘LONG WHEELBASE’ VERSION IS THE BEST👍👍👍👍👍
Ricky, you are truly amazing!
One word..ray flacke rules a telecaster guitar.m
I saw them in Odessa TX Holiday Inn ballroom and got Picky Ricky pick.
LOVE the B bender!
Love this!
LOVE IT!
OURSTANDING!
Last of true country. Play it boy.. yeeeeee hawwwww!!!!!
True country!
's all about the tiny tele!
Tight!!!!!!!
the new king of bluegrass!
Terrific.
Adding this to NASA set list...
Oh I see it’s Ray Flacke
This is so amazing and awesome. I can watch this dozens of times a week and NEVER get bored
mighty fine pickin
I remember hearing this in the 80s and thinking he sang "Thunderations" instead of "Don't get above your raisin'."
Another fella said he thought he heard don’t eat a fuzzy raisin, which is solid advice..
Ray Flacke!
⚡
Also, one of the greatest fiddle players of all time, Bobbie Hicks, is playing rhythm guitar!!! Whatever happened to Flacke?
Hicks pix rhythm. Great group. Najs song.
what a solo @ 1:36 !
A great Piano solo by Micky Merritt....!
Ricky's mandocaster must've had a bender in it...
Sure nuff ...
Is this the real Ricky skaggs remember my dad his name is Dennis Russel
Tyler lance Walter Gill should cover this
I wonder if Ray Flacke is still living? Just curious, but he sure was a great guitar player though :)
I didn't know they made a B- Bender Mandocaster
Ironic thing is Ricky got above his raising.
Is this 5:52 version available anywhere for purchase anywhere? The version from the album "Waiting' For The Sun To Shone" is just 3:10, so most of the solos don't appear. Only long version is off a live album from London (7:10) & FAR more uptempo.
Can anyone tell me what instrument Ricky is playing in this video?
Jeff McMurray it’s a custom built mandocaster lol. Made to look like a miniature telecaster but tuned like a mandolin and also has a string bender in it like a pedal steel would have but activated by the strap button. It was made by Joe Glaser in Nashville.
Ricky Skaggs is fantastic. But, don’t forget.... it’s a Flat and Scruggs original.
Oh! I get it! Raisin like how much money you make not a dried grape... im to stoned rn i dont even fuck with cuntry really
👍💜🌈💥
💥💥🌈🌈💜💜👍👍
This is UPtown, I tell you whut.
That’s when country music was country music ♥️♥️
