Philip Glass is a musical genius. He can use the maths of composition, music, and pure emotions symbiotically to near perfection. A master in my opinion.
It's the repetitive sounds of the conscious mind, thinking of new things, while constantly stirring thoughts in the background; considering, returning, resolving, reconsidering, but always flowing with thought, as music.
What an great insight on the music of Philip Glass. Great analogy mate. Some call it redundant or repetitive, without seeing the parallel between his music and the human consciousness. What are our lives if not a great battle against redundancy, we aspire to great change when really, "change" comes from a heap of subtle nuances.
Yah okay lay your crack pipe down, Philip glass made some good music. But let’s be realistic here, most his work is based on pure repetitive music., When you listen koyanisqatsi and powaqatsi then you listen, to his later work. Always the same little melodies. I do hand it to him, he made it his signature sound. But after 2 tracks, you’ve heard all glass does in the majority of his work.
@@MichelLinschotenthat's the point of the genre he pioneered. Not everyone wants crazy changes in music. Sometimes persistent repetition is just what one desires.

His playing answers her questions quite well. I know the music before I heard her questions so I already know the outcome. If you don’t know already know the outcome is good.
It’s not about having several different chords and riffs and notes and changes, it’s about the story it tells and if you listen and think of something different each time the notes aren’t the same
@@pillettadoinswartsh4974 There’s a difference between hating minimalism as a genre and playing it well. Gould likely would have used less pedal. Composers can never own the correct interpretation of their work.
@@jonathanlawrence6586 When people compose a piece, most of them want to hear how people play it. Yes I agree with your comment but Chopin and Bach did own the right interpretation of some of their pieces for piano, clavier and harpsichord. We still have the freedom to play as we like, even change the tempo and etc... but it is hard.
I was a bit surprised by Glass's "lyrical" approach to this work, but I think it might be a result of wanting to keep things fresh, and also of understanding that the piano is, first and foremost, a romantic instrument, and is good to be treated as such. At the moment, I'm learning to play Metamorphoses. I still can't nail those fast arpeggiated passages, damn.
I find it interesting that Glass' Metamorphosis 1 was the only thing that Bear McCreary did not compose in the reworking of Battlestar Galactica. 'All along the Watchtower' does not count since it's a total revamp of the Hendrix version of Dylan's song.
It seems that the interviewer is trying to diminish the talent of the great composer. She's probably a good pianist. However, P. Glass escapes the reporter's rudeness very well and gives perfect answers.
I saw him perform a few years ago and he hit some major clunkers during the performance... and it was awesome!!! Admittedly, for this performance he's playing too fast for his own ability.
Problem i have with him, is that he sticks with repeating himself in nearly any album. Koyanisqatsi was amazing, but he did not do much else imho on changing his music to the next level.
The same flow and sound is maintained through the entirety. Nothing left to the imagination and no real creativity. Unfortunately I feel like once you've heard the first 30 seconds of this piece you've heard the whole song. Usually a fan of Philip Glass but not on this one.. major pet peeve when the left hand never shifts, far too repetitive for my taste. Oh well, not for everybody right?
But thats one of the main characteristic of minimalist music, but I know what you mean. However. I don't mind its very repetitive nature due to the fact that the harmony is fucking fantastic: the order of the chords are good and the chords sound quite colourful.
That's why I love this because the deeper you go in the song, the more different the repetition are I think.. You have to let your imagination do the job. But I don't know shit about Classic in general that's just my opinion

Philip Glass, the world needs you. Thank you.
I love rock, punk for many centuries and then I meet this and all changed!

He reinvents his sound and himself. Hypnotic.
A beautiful piece. Love how new segments are introduced and overlapped throughout. A stunning piece of work.

A shame we never got to hear Glenn Gould playing Glass.
He wouldn’t have played Glass, he said that he hated minimalism in several interviews
No one could play it better than Philip himself.
Not even Glenn.

Glass is all soul.

Poor sound quality.
