I’ve just watched it today and I felt that Rosie was actually grooming John. He wasn’t the one leading the affair and Rosie was putting him under terrible pressure.
Before he turned into a kidnapper, John was actually a nice fella. I think it’s wrong to call this “grooming” - Rosie was ultra manipulative and knew exactly what she was doing in the beginning. Still, John should never have given in, he should have turned her away like Liam Connor did. So John was weak but not exactly a “groomer”.
It isn't grooming. Grooming is when an older person prepares and slowly manipulates a child to believe that they should do intimate things or be in a relationship with them and that it's ok to be. A 16 year old coming onto him isn't the same although it's still not good and all it would have taken was John to remember he's much older and should be wiser.
John was not just 'stupid and weak' he was still predatory, however much of an asshole Rosie was, however 'manipulative' she was it was his responsibility to say no like Liam did.

This story would NOT fly today, the way Rosie is suuuper portrayed as NOT being a victim, despite being 16 (however she behaved, it was John's responsibility to say no, Liam dealt with it the right way earlier on), and everyone is essentially slut-shaming a teenager and seem to blame her almost as much as John (also Fiz saying they deserve each other, I'm sorry but however horrible Rosie was here no one 'deserves' to be groomed like that). Rosie did not 'ruin his life', he did it himself, he should have said no from the very start like Liam did, and he wasnt just 'weak' and'stupid', he admits he wad 'flattered', it seemed to be more to do with his ego.
