When riot said they'll have the biggest budget this year they meant the biggest budget to spend on making the most outrageous cosmetic monetization plans ever.
As someone that hasn't spend a dime on league since they introduce lootbox in the system, this is the result of the consumers being willing to buy everything they spit out to "collect" every skin of their favorite champion. It's not really an issue since at the end of the day, the people spending hundreds just to get a outfit for a digital char are the only one suffering.
Spending on just your favorite is okay. Imagine you're Ornn main. You can buy 3 skin. Or Kayn main. You can buy 5 and you'll get a new skin every 2 or 3 years. Problem is some people have mental problems like they feel like they have to buy every new skin.
I think spending some money on your fav champs after idk thousand of ours of free gameplay is pretty okay, lootboxes tho, never okay specially in a game that children can access
The thing is that while money is certainly important in game development it is also very slippery slope once you start to do these kind of things. It can go very very wrong. I think the best way to cash in on the whales I've seen over the years is done by Jagex where they have completely different version of the same game (Runescape 3) where you can buy progress and MTX is a more common thing. RS3 plays that ''devil's advocate'' for RS community. Reason why I react to this case with Riot negatively is because the formula of ''big company'' + ''heavy monetization'' + ''F2P'' seems like that slippery slope in full action. You start with a loot box, you add a battle pass, you add insanely expensive chroma, you add another, another... And right here we can also see they are not afraid of doing it for each game they own and run under the Riot name. I guess runeterra is most untouched when it comes to MTX? I don't play it or follow it. But the fact they add these things, at least to me seems like a recipe for disaster. I've seen it many times where greed of company completely and utterly destroyes the game integrity (Nexon, all the korean MMOs, etc).

my biggest problem with tft's monetization is the scaling back of free rewards. you used to get eggs with the free battle pass but now you only get the tokens for the gatcha, forcing people to interact with that system, and you dont even get enough tokens to roll until a bit into the battle pass.
i actually couldnt care less if they introduce stuff for 500$, 1000$ or 10k. If there are idiots buying this stuff to feel special, more power to them. As long as there is absolutely no pay2win element attached to it, i won't care at all.

After a decade of relationship with Riot Games and League of Legends, moving over to Dota2 has been an amazing fresh experience, especially with cosmetics and microtransactions in general, both are incredibly cheaper compare to League, aside from the cheap pricing of skin sets, you can buy individual pieces and make your own sets which may even be cheaper compare to the hero's currently available sets while still giving you a satisfactory cosmetic change. Dota2 also has gacha boxes but they show you predetermined sets you would get and not a giant pool of ever growing cosmetics, and after getting a set, depending on the Treasure, it's either a guaranteed on a different set until it rolls the set you want or if it's a dupe, you can convert them to points in which you can buy other cosmetics. The best part out of all this is that some cosmetics are resellable which you can use that money for something else not just in Dota2, making the game inherently very wallet friendly.
In Game Development, it shall always be a battle between: Passion Or Money Incorporating both would be ideal, but such a game takes a lot of time, effort, and talent, and it usually isnt free to play.
This is just flat out messed up how much work was put into making this compared to any other legendary or even an ultimate scan That's always been my problem with monetization just let me buy the damn thing for what it's actually worth if you did a good enough job you don't make enough money and yes I know everyone has their own taste and their own thoughts on how much something's worth but if you have a base that's easy to figure out
So, adding. I'm not a whale in the sense of having 'lots of money to spend contiously' But over the course of TFTs life, I've spent say $20 here, $20 there. I've never had to go to pity for a LL I wanted, including chibis. TFT is kinda amazing, because if you own a item already - you don't get duplicates. You own that item. So what happens? all FUTURE purchases including those items in the pool, are NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN PULL. For the first collectors bounty, I will already own SG Lux and DM Ashe. I own a few high quality little legends too, not starr'd up, but own them. Soooooooo I can probably get them in just a few rolls, without having to go close to $500. Most whales will be the same, this is basically only to get a huge surplus of income. (I saw a leak that said runeterra is bleeding riot so badly, along with taking on oceanic servers, that their actually losing more money than their comfy with but due to playerbase they won't remove runeterra as of now.)

If I was a whale, even if I was willing to spend $500 for a skin, I would be kinda offended that Riot is openly admitting they are trying to extort as much money out of me as possible, increasing the price higher and higher each time because they can get away with it. And as someone who’s F2P, it blows my mind how people will spend $500 on a cosmetic item in a single game when that much money is enough to buy 20-50 FULL GAMES on steam. TFT has had terribly pradatory monetization for years now. Every chibi is way overpriced and the fact that you can't just buy whichever variant you want of a little legends is stupid. Not to mention the poro and baron ones...
The part about the chinese verison of tft is true and not true at the same time, there is a tft version that is exclusively on mobile devices called battle of the golden spatula and features its own set cosmetics that are completely different from standard TFT. However, there is also the standard TFT played on PC and is the same as TFT in NA and other servers. It is on this standard version of TFT that the prestige version of Yasuo is being released, not the golden spatual version - TFT chinese server player
I really wish game companies (riot included) would try something more creative instead of copy pasting the same monetization schemes. Yes, it's risky. But you can't play a game nowadays without some slight variation on a battle pass or gacha system.

1:37 something similar happened to Giants that their amazing Free to play game fell off, Not because they couldn't Manipulate and Scam their audience its because they were tol generous to even ask for money. Which is something the playerbase would've wanted wholeheartly, skins weren't locked you could actually work for them which is a problem as they couldn't give that much value outside of that. Well in theory because they already did via their game being really amazing, so all I really suggested with some people is they litterary just a tab that while not giving much back in it of itself was a basically patreon if you wanted the game to continue to exist you could pay a certain amount to the company to support this game. Which again the value isn't from some fucking Batlle pass or Skins, though you can moraly sell them, the value comes from if your playerbase wants to support it. But I feel so dissapointed they didn't really try and the fact the only critism Giant as a game has is it was made as ART first and never a product which sucks because that art needs people to work on it so some level product needs to be sold. Honestly I thought TFT had a tolerable monetization scheme before treasure trove. I was fine spending a little for the chibi skins when it was eggs for chibis especially since the drop rate was higher, but after the drop rate nerf it feels way more gacha/monetarily hungry than before :(
In a gacha is is literally power the gacha is about, this is just a different chibi that you would use maybe 10 times and then switch back to your prefered tactician you always use anyway. I mean sure it sucks, but it's not comparable.

i think its better now since you dont have to buy it all at once. now you can take a few months and only buy the season passes and you dont lose all your progress towards the mythic one. to me it seems more friendly towards low spenders.

Riot seems to be confusing prestige with exclusivity as of late. Prestige is defined as "Inspiring [of] respect and admiration; having high status." Exclusive, meanwhile, is defined as "Restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned." The only kind of admiration that buying a $200 skin will get you is for how much you're willing to splurge on a chroma. Edit: we found the whales lol Edit 2: god damn the salt!
Prestige was meant to be exclusivity from the very beginning, Riot just realised that it can be even more "exclusive". When I said Riot realised, I mean they saw there are some people willing to spend even more money than they expected at first. The only difference is that, at first, it was meant to be exclusive but somewhat obtainable for everyone and now they want to go full exclusive mode.
I mean the difference between Prestige and Exclusive is already blurred, so in essence they're the same, there's like a very small percentage of players that already own at least one Prestige Skin.
Problem is, while the price tag indirectly makes these items exclusive for certain groups, it isn't actually exclusive to those groups. If you're *really* dedicated you can get it anyways

Admittedly, I may be the target audience for the jhin chroma. I have perhaps spent An Amount of money on league skins in the past, and I pride myself on having every single jhin skin and chroma possible. But I didnt even try to get the skin. Somehow i, a disgustingly dedicated jhin main didnt even want it. thats a little sad, riot.

everyday I'm bummed that LoR is so free to play. I truly wish the game could generate more revenue so we could get more guardians and boards and skins on a more rapid cadence. I love the game to death and the team is incredible. But man, sometimes it makes me sad that we're "too f2p for our own good." It stops people from even playing the game, for some reason

My only issue is that I am a HUGE League whale and even I didn't spend anything on the Jhin skin. I just couldn't rationalise it at all. It was so low effort.
I'm already not a fan of the gacha/lootbox aspect of TFT considering League just lets you buy skins normally, but the fact we're getting over-priced prestige skins for chibis when we haven't even gotten a majority of the actual cast as Chibis, is wild. We could be appealing to more players of various champs... not just giving Yasuo more cosmetics like normal league...
i honestly think people who pay for the chibis are morons, regardless of the price. the animation is the best part, but it does get tiresome and you miss out time to plan your next board, a pay to lose situation.
I am almost completely fine with Riot introducing $200 chromas, etc. If I see someone using one of them in one of my games, I might even think, "thank you, random citizen, for paying for this game so that I can play." Riot has even done a very good job of not making things pay-to-win. I don't even mind them releasing cosmetics marketed towards whales, as long as it doesn't significantly interrupt the release of features for normal players (why should I care if they released a $200 chroma, it probably took them like an hour to make and most of that was for the splash art. It doesn't keep me from getting new things, and I'm not buying it, so it doesn't really affect me. That chroma probably pays for itself if even one gets sold, if you think about it it's a really efficient way for them to raise funds for new features and stuff). There are only 2 things that concern me about their monetization, but they concern me a lot: 1) It's a gacha system, with an in-game premium currency. In-game premium currencies are specifically intended to keep people from really understanding how much money they're spending on something, while gacha systems are intended to be addictive. The combination of the two will probably draw in people who really can't afford to be spending the money on the game, and points towards an increasing likelihood of scummy monetization methods in the future. 2) I'm hesitantly looking forwards to the Riot MMO set to come out in a few years, but if I compare Riot's progress in monetization to Blizzard's, the Riot MMO will come out looking like Diablo IV or Diablo Immortals (in terms of monetization). I think an MMO would be great for League's lore and League's popularity, and I think an MMO set in League's universe could be amazing. However, if they gutted the game and made you pay extra to get individual features that should really be part of the base game, or if they made it pay to win, it would be ruined for me. If they did that to League, I would leave.

You aren't supposed to have every skin nor can you use more than one at once. Then there's stuff like Janna's base skin which is literally the best skin (tied with Sacred Sword). How would map cosmetics work tho?? What if you bought 1 and someone in your team also bought 1 and someone from the enemy team bought 1.. how would that work?? Which map would be the one you guys use??
Don't know if it's possible with how old the client is, but since it's a skin and doesn't change gameplay, you could just display it differently for every player. Removes the "flex" element though.

is comparing tft to genshin really valid, yes both have gacha but in Genshin you can unlock different playable characters that alter how you play, where as in tft you can only unlock cosmetics

I used to be a whale due to undiagnosed and unmedicated ADHD until 4 years ago. No joke. I spent my first paycheck on mobile games and League skins while I was in a homeless shelter. TFT got too pricey like last year, but this is ridiculous. Uninstalled and stopped playing as soon as the Barons came out. Thank god for psychiatrists. I'm actually getting my debt down. Otherwise, I would probably be in such a huge hole, but at least I would have this and that $200 Jhin chroma skin XD Obviously, no thank you.
Honestly, as tft player, i am absolutely fine with them releasing a 500$ skin or even 1000$ skin. Why not? Unlike LoL, where skins may affect gameplay (skill visibility, sound diff), in tft, there is absolutely no impact. I will never touch anything above 15$, as my budget is already strained as is, but if thanks to them releasing expensive skins, the game gets more funding and gets more fun, then don't we all win? my biggest problem with tft's monetization is the scaling back of free rewards. you used to get eggs with the free battle pass but now you only get the tokens for the gatcha, forcing people to interact with that system, and you dont even get enough tokens to roll until a bit into the battle pass.

After a decade of relationship with Riot Games and League of Legends, moving over to Dota2 has been an amazing fresh experience, especially with cosmetics and microtransactions in general, both are incredibly cheaper compare to League, aside from the cheap pricing of skin sets, you can buy individual pieces and make your own sets which may even be cheaper compare to the hero's currently available sets while still giving you a satisfactory cosmetic change. Dota2 also has gacha boxes but they show you predetermined sets you would get and not a giant pool of ever growing cosmetics, and after getting a set, depending on the Treasure, it's either a guaranteed on a different set until it rolls the set you want or if it's a dupe, you can convert them to points in which you can buy other cosmetics. The best part out of all this is that some cosmetics are resellable which you can use that money for something else not just in Dota2, making the game inherently very wallet friendly.

The part about the chinese verison of tft is true and not true at the same time, there is a tft version that is exclusively on mobile devices called battle of the golden spatula and features its own set cosmetics that are completely different from standard TFT. However, there is also the standard TFT played on PC and is the same as TFT in NA and other servers. It is on this standard version of TFT that the prestige version of Yasuo is being released, not the golden spatual version

I really wish game companies (riot included) would try something more creative instead of copy pasting the same monetization schemes. Yes, it's risky. But you can't play a game nowadays without some slight variation on a battle pass or gacha system.
....I already hate how much they made tft little legends expensive and difficult to get if you want something that is legendary level. For the cheese strat, it was basically buy all the legends eggs available and star them to max and use your legend egg to get the legendary through battle pass (ugh). Honestly I thought TFT had a tolerable monetization scheme before treasure trove. I was fine spending a little for the chibi skins when it was eggs for chibis especially since the drop rate was higher, but after the drop rate nerf it feels way more gacha/monetarily hungry than before :(
In a gacha is is literally power the gacha is about, this is just a different chibi that you would use maybe 10 times and then switch back to your prefered tactician you always use anyway. I mean sure it sucks, but it's not comparable.

Riot seems to be confusing prestige with exclusivity as of late. Prestige is defined as "Inspiring [of] respect and admiration; having high status." Exclusive, meanwhile, is defined as "Restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned."
The only kind of admiration that buying a $200 skin will get you is for how much you're willing to splurge on a chroma.

Prestige was meant to be exclusivity from the very beginning, Riot just realised that it can be even more "exclusive". When I said Riot realised, I mean they saw there are some people willing to spend even more money than they expected at first.
The only difference is that, at first, it was meant to be exclusive but somewhat obtainable for everyone and now they want to go full exclusive mode.
I mean the difference between Prestige and Exclusive is already blurred, so in essence they're the same, there's like a very small percentage of players that already own at least one Prestige Skin.

I have perhaps spent An Amount of money on league skins in the past, and I pride myself on having every single jhin skin and chroma possible. But I didnt even try to get the skin. I am almost completely fine with Riot introducing $200 chromas, etc. If I see someone using one of them in one of my games, I might even think, "thank you, random citizen, for paying for this game so that I can play." Riot has even done a very good job of not making things pay-to-win. I don't even mind them releasing cosmetics marketed towards whales, as long as it doesn't significantly interrupt the release of features for normal players (why should I care if they released a $200 chroma, it probably took them like an hour to make and most of that was for the splash art. It doesn't keep me from getting new things, and I'm not buying it, so it doesn't really affect me. That chroma probably pays for itself if even one gets sold, if you think about it it's a really efficient way for them to raise funds for new features and stuff). There are only 2 things that concern me about their monetization, but they concern me a lot:
1) It's a gacha system, with an in-game premium currency. In-game premium currencies are specifically intended to keep people from really understanding how much money they're spending on something, while gacha systems are intended to be addictive. The combination of the two will probably draw in people who really can't afford to be spending the money on the game, and points towards an increasing likelihood of scummy monetization methods in the future.
2) I'm hesitantly looking forwards to the Riot MMO set to come out in a few years, but if I compare Riot's progress in monetization to Blizzard's, the Riot MMO will come out looking like Diablo IV or Diablo Immortals (in terms of monetization). I think an MMO would be great for League's lore and League's popularity, and I think an MMO set in League's universe could be amazing. However, if they gutted the game and made you pay extra to get individual features that should really be part of the base game, or if they made it pay to win, it would be ruined for me. If they did that to League, I would leave.

is comparing tft to genshin really valid, yes both have gacha but in Genshin you can unlock different playable characters that alter how you play, where as in tft you can only unlock cosmetics
You save primos to unlock character , but you never get those chibis without spending money
i unlocked all the champions this year, i love how it feels like an acomplishment

I used to be a whale due to undiagnosed and unmedicated ADHD until 4 years ago. No joke. I spent my first paycheck on mobile games and League skins while I was in a homeless shelter. TFT got too pricey like last year, but this is ridiculous. Uninstalled and stopped playing as soon as the Barons came out.
Thank god for psychiatrists. I'm actually getting my debt down. Otherwise, I would probably be in such a huge hole, but at least I would have this and that $200 Jhin chroma skin XD Obviously, no thank you.
Honestly, as tft player, i am absolutely fine with them releasing a 500$ skin or even 1000$ skin. Why not? Unlike LoL, where skins may affect gameplay (skill visibility, sound diff), in tft, there is absolutely no impact. I will never touch anything above 15$, as my budget is already strained as is, but if thanks to them releasing expensive skins, the game gets more funding and gets more fun, then don't we all win? Isn't it great?
