For some reason, whole notes are displayed as circles in the software, but this has no particular meaning.

my dad always said (probably still does) that "need" follows from an "in order to...x"
in order to play the song? not necessarily, i can do it with fingers and with a pick, but the 16ths @~ 2:25 are much easier with a pick and i get sloppy without it
mikey way (bassist of mcr) uses a pick, so in order to play like he does: yes
at the end of the day it doesnt matter as long as it sounds good and feels right, but i usually look into what the original bass player does so that i know what technique they were writing their bass part around
