I hope you guys enjoy this Real World Review seeing how the iPhone 11 Pro's camera worked in the hands of me. As a quick side note, it came out after the review was filmed that the ultra wide-angle lens may have it's focused locked in an may not be able to be unlocked to shoot RAW at this time. None the less, this was a fun challenge and I think I was able to get some nice images.

Best iPhone camera review so far! Pro reviewing "pro" is the way! Those concert photos were amazing, once again proving that while it's good to have nicer tools, it takes a pro to make it pro.
Best review I’ve seen yet on this phone camera. I’ve seen a pretty comprehensive shot-by-shot comparison with other phone cameras, but your review goes much further into real-world use. You’ve just earned my subscription. I’m a professional photographer, so it’s handy that a phone review captured my attention to pull your channel from the crowd.
This is one of the most real instructional videos I’ve ever seen. It’s not slanted towards Apple, it’s not slanted so that will love the phone and buy it. It’s really an unbiased new to report. I have had some of the same issues like I had no idea how to slide to the left. I had no idea about the night mode. I did take a couple courses at the Apple University here in Sarasota I started Nikon school years ago about a year I’ve had some advanced photography from a dance photographer called Sorcha Augustine here in Sarasota but I didn’t know most of the stuff but I’ve been shooting for about two months and I’m very satisfied with the iPhone 11 which does not have that third lens on it. This guy made the same mistakes I did he show me some Key facts about composition and the same things and help on my camera happen on his spirit a lot of these videos is simply cleaned up and they don’t admit they’re making mistakes. I really like these real world reviews. You're one of the few people that actually put cameras to good use instead of shooting the wall and evaluating the sharpness of bricks. You give me a great idea of what I can do with a camera in a real situation.
Fantastic review of the cameras on the iPhone. Perfectly shows the good and the bad of the cameras. There are too many reviews out there only showing the good of the system.
I only regret that I have but one "Like" to give for this awesome, complete, honest, and professional coverage of the iPhone 11 Pro. What makes it especially meaningful is the past maligning of everything cell-phone you've done. You actually took this phone seriously for a day, and proved it can be a worthy instrument in the right hands. Good job, and kudos to Jared Polin on this classic piece of coverage which so completely covers a technologic marvel. - (First-time commenter)
The portrait mode photos on Blake look amazing. This is hands down the most high quality video on youtube concerning this phone and its photo capabilities. Bravo sir!
I think your the first review that didn’t test with the iPhone 11 Pro “Max”. And the first real photographer point of view. I’ve seen other reviews promoting real photographer but never touched on picture quality, aperture and other views of opinion. Great review.
A MAJOR plus here is that you shot the whole process with another iPhone 11. You almost always see reviewers intersperse DSLR footage in there, and that makes this SO much more valuable! Thanks for that. Also those concert shots look seriously fantastic.
This was my first time watching your videos and I just want to say how much I love your format. I was looking for info on the new iPhone and I got that and more from you. Definitely subscribing cause I feel like I've got tons to learn from you!
Just want to say thank you for your helpful video about real world shots from the iPhone 11. I’ve been looking for someone that can show me what the iPhone can do on photos rather explaining just in words how it compares to other phones. I take many photos of gardens and other landscape architecture designs in the real world and your guide really helped me in deciding if I should upgrade to an iPhone 11 for my future photos. I’ve always used an iPhone for my photography (i am not a pro but would love to learn how to be one) . Thanks again for your knowledge!!!
Tip: Use you thumb to get to the touch shutter (so you barely move the phone) and hold the phone between the index and the little finger. The middle and ring finger on the back of the phone to maintain stability.
Great video showcasing what YOU can do with a modern cell phone camera nowadays. I almost thought the prints wouldn't turn out 'great' but it's awesome you showed the prints. Those prints look pretty good! Apple needs to share and contract you for stuff now, haha.
Thanks for focusing on the cameras. I am an avid Nikon user and pull out my expensive camera bag less and less now that I have this phone. It's such a step above my iPhone 7 Plus.
You can get grips for these now so you can hold it like a regular camera and you get a shutter button too. They work pretty good. I’m using my iPhone more and more these days.
Apple should have given you the phone to take Photos for their iPhone 11 announcement. Your images would have been much more interesting then the ones Apple used.
Hi Jared. Though I have an iPhone 11, and take casual "snapshots" with it, I would Never consider printing an image for wall display from ANY phone camera, for the simple reason of tiny sensor and limited lenses. In fact, I use a Fuji X-T3, but am considering selling it to move to the Nikon Z7, specifically for the larger FF sensor, as I routinely print large (24" x 36" and up). Call me a sharpness fanatic, but I simply don't believe that one can defy physics, especially when printing posters.
Honestly Jared always does the best camera reviews he is not biased he always says what's on his mind and honest about every shot that's why I will always take his opinion over almost anyone else
Great video Jared, thanks for sharing your experiences - I'm looking forward to trying the new iPhone when I get mine in a few weeks. I did some testing and research and concluded the following: BURST MODE Takes full resolution photos using 100% of sensor pixels available at the time within the photo frame of view. Once saved all the photos in the burst are available, if you want to save only the perfectly times shot, you can choose "select" at the bottom of the screen and you can choose one more more shots to save, which will split them into individual shots in the camera roll. Shutter speed is 10 shots per second, so you get 10 increments of movement for every second you hold the shutter down. Pros - You can hold the shutter as long as you want (storage dependent!) so can be useful in situations where you are not sure when the "event" is going to happen. For example in a lightning storm I have held down the shutter for 2 min until I have the perfect flash recorded and then I single that out and delete the rest. - You don't need to time the start as carefully as you do with Live Photos - Full resolution images full frame on the sensor - Better for darker scenes and effective lower ISO required so less noise Cons - Takes up more storage space than a live photo (initially) - You must hold the shutter down rather then just tapping it, this can be tricky in some situations if you are one handed. Using the volume buttons - and holding them can cause your hand to shake reducing the quality of images - I recommend holding the phone with 2 hands and using the screen shutter button. LIVE PHOTOS Shoots a combination of one keyframe photo and a 3 sec video clip at 15fps as one packaged file - this shows as a single entity on your phone but is actually 2 files, a photo and shot video. Once saved you can use the technique in this video to choose frames, but it is not quite the same as choosing another frame in a burst sequence - there is a very real deterioration in quality if you choose another frame from the Live Photo sequence and make it the key frame. Pros - No need to hold the shutter button down. - Mode can be left on so that every photo you take will have the option to go back and select another frame. - Is a nice affect for browsing camera roll. - Captures audio and allows you to get a real sense of the atmosphere of a place - I use for places I visit where I want a snap memory of what it felt to be there at that moment. I always take a non Live Photo too so I have a photo saved which has utilised all the processing of smart HDR/ merging of exposures for instance. - At 15fps you get 5 more shots per second than burst - more choices. Cons - Only the key photo is at full resolution - if you follow the technique in the video and change the key photo, you will notice when zooming in that it is slightly blurry, this is because the frame is from the video file potion of the Live Photo instead of the static image file also saved (photo portion is still saved and you can revert back to it later). - Quality of the video frames are much lower than main key frame. This is to allow the phone to record more frames as video. - Timing the Live Photo for a specific event can be tricky - the video portion will be buffering before you take the photo and continue for 1.5sec after pressing the shutter, so aim to press the shutter at the exact moment the “event” happens. - Not as good in low light - having Live Photo enabled in dark scenes actually has a detrimental affect on the key frame too - advice is to not use - - - Live Photo in low light conditions even on the new iPhone 11/11 Pro as they will not utilise the night mode processing techniques in Live Photo mode. - When you change the keyframe the image is cropped slightly, this is because it is using a smaller area of the sensor for video to reduce the data to be captured in each frame (more frames). Personally I think burst mode is a far better solution for action shots. You get much higher quality images. Jared makes a really good point about quality photos not just being about the technology, its also about angles/framing and creativity, but something additional often only thought of by “photographers” which can make a real difference, is just some basic rules to give your camera a helping hand: - Always shoot with the light behind you and directly onto the moving subject. If you specifically want to shoot a silhouette, you may get some noise in the shadows, but this can be easily fixed by editing the shadows down to be darker which also improves contrast and the silhouette effect. - Choose your distance and lens carefully - if you can get in closer and use the wide (not super wide) rather than tele, do that because the tele will naturally have more noise and less sharpness due to the f.stop and lens configuration. Super wide may work but on iPhone 11/11Pro doesn’t have optical stabilisation, something that may be fine even for fast moving shots as the wide angle reduces the distance shakes travel within the frame anyway - I’m still waiting for mine so haven’t been able to test this out myslef. - Move the phone with the subject - if you can track the movement of the subject instead of allowing it to move through the frame, you will achieve a much sharper subject especially in lower light. For fast shots you may even get some nice motion blur to the background with the subject remaining crisp, this works particularly well for moving transport such as a train going through a platform at speed (don’t get too close!!) Just play around and figure out what you like and have fun in the process - that is the beauty of digital photography! Hope that sheds some more light on the subject!!! 😎 Joe
You should make a film from the pro & 11 about the difference of camera videos and especially the zoom. But you should also include the microphone testing and a sound testing to really understand which phone is better. There is nothing on UA-cam to explain in details about this three important factors especially a test done on how much better the zoom is on the pro vs the 11.
Jared Polin yup! Made the comment before finishing the video and saw you explained it later! Great job on the review though! Loved it! Not getting it this year but excited for the next one!
I frantically searched to get an 11 Pro for an upcoming trip. Did I need it? No. Did I want it? Yes. Did I find a 512GB phone? No. Haha! But, I'm upgrading from an iPhone SE 64GB phone t a 256GB iPhone Pro. Wanted to upgrade at the 8, but love the smaller frame of the SE. Just can't pass up the camera improvements any longer. Sure, I'd rather shoot with a DSLR, but that phone is always in the pocket. So, off I go to Indonesia with my 2 Nikon D500's, a Nauticam U/W housing ... and an iPhone 11 Pro in my pocket ordered today. I'm a LifeProof Case Guy, but not available yet, but am a fan of some sort of protection. So glad I found this review! Great Stuff! Always "like" your vids, but finally subscribed!
The camera has two different settings for file format, one of which shoots HEIC ( high efficiency) and the other (most compatible) uses jpeg. There are quite a few 3rd party apps that shoot RAW now in the App Store too so all the basses are covered pretty much on the iPhone .
Nice review/test... Been using my RX100IV for 'snaps' (I use a Sony A7III + XT2 for the 'pro' work)... But have to admit, pics from my iphone XR already kinda impress me for what they are, and seeing this...well, I'm really starting to wonder if I shouldn't replace my RX100IV for an iphone11 now. Difference seems very marginal, and the RX100IV lacks a lot of the nice extras a phone-camera offers. And this is coming from a 20+yrs experienced photographer who always sniffed at camera phones. Times have changed a lot!
There's an app called Pro Camera which is the best camera app for the iPhone IMO (they invented "Night Mode") For portrait mode check out Focos app, it's incredible. You can hand paint the depth map, simulate lenses (Helios 44-2 on iPhone, woohoo), place 3D lights in the scene and more
@@hassansaeed3053 i think phones are spending too much time on the cameras they not worth it . there are real cameras way cheaper but seems like thats what ppl care about cameras on phones . and for daily casual use any phone do the job but for quality not
Refugio Flores are you serious lol the most popular camera in the world are mobile phones. With that kinda of thinking technology wouldn’t advance at all
Pixelmator Pro allows you to edit the depth map now! It just loads it up as a filter mask. It would be better if Portrait Mode just got it right every time, but it can be saved when needed.
@@etchetera9231 So hold the phone like a camera, place the volume buttons down and to the left, using your left thumb to press the volume button shutter...that way, the lenses are up by your left pointer/middle fingers and you can make sure they stay clear. Or, hold it like a traditional camera where your right pointer touches the volume/shutter button like every SLR out there. If it is causing you to tilt your phone, stop pushing so hard
You can get RAW and portrait mode with apps like Halide, and you can fix imperfect depth maps with third-party apps as well. Would be great if all that was baked into iOS and its stock camera app, of course, but there are ways to get those things anyway
I notice that live photo excess frames have lower quality than the original/main frame. So when you choose other frames as key photo, you’ll get the compressed version. I don’t know if they changed that with iPhone 11 but that’s how it was with my iPhone X
That is an interesting way of holding the phone... Great job with the review and photo's/video. Seems like a good replacement for my DJI Osmo Pocket, Sony Point and Shoot all together for family/personal stuff
Thanks, Jared finally you actually made prints from the iPhone 11 pro as far as I know no one who has reviewed this phone actually made prints . I have been waiting for someone to do that. Pixel peeping, using a computer screen or the phone really doesn't show what I believe is what a smartphone or even a camera can achieve in the end it's about a print of at least an 8X10. I am glad you printed even bigger I have to say I am very impressed with the iPhone 11 pro. I see this as a tool that Photographers should be willing to use when they don't have a camera with them but comes across something Photo worthy unexpected.
8:41 The girl with the Note 10 plus in her hand looking at you like, " you gotta do lot of exercise with the silly iphone to get a decent picture. Poor Apple users"
Your grip is a good idea imo I hadn't thought of that.. I'd suggest if you or anyone else has earpods with them, tap the volume button and take a pic that way? Good video!!
I have always had iphone but briefly tested a samsung s10+ and i have to say that was way worse for capturing your finger in the wide image due to lens placement on the device , as much as an apple fan boy as i am i agree to an extent ! I have a “mous” case and have had no issues with kens flare because the recess is a little deeper (probably 3mm or more) i previously had an apple case on my old xs max and found it to still get lens flare ! I highly recommend mous if people are looking for a stylish but protective case that gets rid if this issue for the most ort
Great review! Quick tip. You can control the blur after the fact in portrait mode. When edges aren’t sharply defined, reducing blur a bit makes the photo a lot more usable!
Excellent inform and thanks! I forwarded this to my daughter who just got the iPhone 11 Pro. Big cameras area great but fitting a good camera into a mobile phone that fits into your pocket or purse has its merits.
Have you used the app Halide or Focos? They’re incredible, Focos is future-like tech. The future of photography in some ways! It’s insane please try it out and make a video on it!! With Focos you can take RAW photos and add real depth data through its AI. It’s truly unreal.
I always assumed Focos uses minimum of 2 lenses to capture foreground with one lens and background with other. Then the slider adjusts the blur one lens? If it does it another way then wow. Gonna try it with my pro max see if it uses 3 lenses. And Halide you think is the best? Camera-M, Procam, Muse, Camera+ my go to’s. Idk which one in particular is my favorite. Best video quality i have taken was Procam I believe 150 bitrate.
Daniel Velkovski I’ve never done an in depth test, but I have all those downloaded as well. Any of those are great choices. Focos now has new technology that allows it to generate depth data in any picture through AI and it does an incredible job at it. It no longer needs multiple lenses, but when using multiple lenses it will be more accurate as it’s being done through actual depth data capture and not artificially generated depth data. It’s pretty damn amazing.
Jared Polin thanks for the great review. Just figured out that if you hold and drag the shutter button down or left or which ever your orientation provides is the opposite of locking it in video mode. This gives you a burst mode like previous phones. The big advantage is it does not crop the key photo selected image like Live Photo does (frustrating and not explainable).
Thanks for this video! I just purchased the IPhone 11 Pro (wanted to see if iPhones would REALLY replace pro photographers & cameras of course😂) Thrilled to try it out! Although I’m thinking my clients would be none to happy if they came to my studio and I pulled out my phone! 🤪
Halide Camera app for iPhone works pretty well, it does allow you to use "Depth" mode or Portrait mode, however just with manual settings, not RAW unfortunately
Jared Polin, you might know by now, if you want to take burst photos, you press the shutter button and swipe left. If you swipe right the video will lock and keeps filming without stopping.
You can remove the portrait mode errors on the skateboarder’s shirt in post using the Focos app. It’s free and let’s you adjust the depth data of the photo.

I always take a non Live Photo too so I have a photo saved which has utilised all the processing of smart HDR/ merging of exposures for instance.
- At 15fps you get 5 more shots per second than burst - more choices.
Cons
- Only the key photo is at full resolution - if you follow the technique in the video and change the key photo, you will notice when zooming in that it is slightly blurry, this is because the frame is from the video file potion of the Live Photo instead of the static image file also saved (photo portion is still saved and you can revert back to it later).
- Not as good in low light - having Live Photo enabled in dark scenes actually has a detrimental affect on the key frame too - advice is to not use - -
- Live Photo in low light conditions even on the new iPhone 11/11 Pro as they will not utilise the night mode processing techniques in Live Photo mode.
- When you change the keyframe the image is cropped slightly, this is because it is using a smaller area of the sensor for video to reduce the data to be captured in each frame (more frames).
Personally I think burst mode is a far better solution for action shots. You get much higher quality images. Jared makes a really good point about quality photos not just being about the technology, its also about angles/framing and creativity, but something additional often only thought of by “photographers” which can make a real difference, is just some basic rules to give your camera a helping hand:
- Always shoot with the light behind you and directly onto the moving subject.
For fast shots you may even get some nice motion blur to the background with the subject remaining crisp, this works particularly well for moving transport such as a train going through a platform at speed (don’t get too close!!)
Just play around and figure out what you like and have fun in the process - that is the beauty of digital photography!
Hope that sheds some more light on the subject!!! 😎
Joe
The prints look so good and concert pics look dope!
Great stuff and I totally agree with the recommendations for camera improvements.. Nice work
Thumbs up for the explaining the live view feature replacing the burst mode.
It didn’t replace it but the other mode is still there. Just swipe left and it does the rapid fire.
Jared Polin yup! Made the comment before finishing the video and saw you explained it later! Great job on the review though! Loved it! Not getting it this year but excited for the next one!
This the only in depth review I have seen so far. Good Job Jared
Thank you for watching.
I've been shooting with my LG V20 since 2016 with it's 12mm equivelent lens, and full manual settings + RAW
cool story lol
Memeorandum of Understanding it’s okay his Snapchat pictures are still 1 megapixel
Yes but we don't care about LG.
Apple is always late to everything and they swear they have revolutionary tech. It's hilarious
Taino Blaze if it wasn’t for apple u wouldn’t have the phone u have now, it paved the way
Thanks for not having a lot of ads.
I think only Jared holds iphone like that while taking photos..
Of course to flex himself as a photographer
F/-- ridiculous
Yeah he’s fucking stupid
Best real review of the iPhone 11 as a CAMERA so far, I learned a lot about some of the potential of this phone, much thanks, bro
Dude I’m dying!!!! 😂 literally almost crying at elongation 😂😂😂
Love your reviews bro
Good stuff Jared. Loved the photographer's impression of the iPhone, which I got it for primarily for its cameras.
Hans von der Crone hey Nice comment ;) . One question what app you recommend to take the photos from the phone please ?
@@TheValbunnys standard app
There's an app called Pro Camera which is the best camera app for the iPhone IMO (they invented "Night Mode")
For portrait mode check out Focos app, it's incredible. You can hand paint the depth map, simulate lenses (Helios 44-2 on iPhone, woohoo), place 3D lights in the scene and more
The fake bokeh in portrait mode is cringeworthy. Sometimes they look alright but more than not it hurts my tiny photographer brain.
They look terrible, its pathetic
@@hassansaeed3053 i think phones are spending too much time on the cameras they not worth it . there are real cameras way cheaper but seems like thats what ppl care about cameras on phones . and for daily casual use any phone do the job but for quality not
Refugio Flores are you serious lol the most popular camera in the world are mobile phones. With that kinda of thinking technology wouldn’t advance at all
100% phones still don’t look as good as a real dslr or mirrorless. Maybe one day it will get there. But not yet.
Pixelmator Pro allows you to edit the depth map now! It just loads it up as a filter mask. It would be better if Portrait Mode just got it right every time, but it can be saved when needed.
Me: Hey, I keep seeing my finger in ultra wide photos
Apple: You're holding the phone wrong.
3forte not all people are right handed🤷🏻♀️
Coz he is holding it the wrong way
@@etchetera9231 So hold the phone like a camera, place the volume buttons down and to the left, using your left thumb to press the volume button shutter...that way, the lenses are up by your left pointer/middle fingers and you can make sure they stay clear.
Should have waited for Deep Fusion to be released for this long review.
Ernie C I’m so excited for it to come out
I notice that live photo excess frames have lower quality than the original/main frame.
Nice review, Fro. I bought the iPhone 11 because it is always with me. So far, I'm happy with it. Made more sense than buying yet another lens.
Thank you for this amazing review! It's the most honest camera review to ever exist of a phone camera by any professional photographer
Thanks, Jared finally you actually made prints from the iPhone 11 pro as far as I know no one who has reviewed this phone actually made prints
27:57 the guy in the back ground is clearly losing it.
photo skills makes the world of difference
8:41 The girl with the Note 10 plus in her hand looking at you like, " you gotta do lot of exercise with the silly iphone to get a decent picture. Poor Apple users"
Your grip is a good idea imo I hadn't thought of that.. I'd suggest if you or anyone else has earpods with them, tap the volume button and take a pic that way? Good video!!
7:16 I don’t know why I laughed so hard at “Beat you up”.
Jared, Great review and demonstration! and you do rock the Fro real well too!!
For all the shots with your finger in it....”You’re holding it wrong” - Steve Jobs
agreed!
I listen to you and nobody else anytime im upgrading my iPhone thank you 🙏
Amazing how far phones have come. Just used my Xs in U.K. Now I wish I had the 11! Thanks!
I wouldn’t be as concerned about the XS as about the UK these days!
26:56 OMG this photo is amazing !!
The neck of the bass is blurred out for indecent exposure :)
Great review! Quick tip. You can control the blur after the fact in portrait mode. When edges aren’t sharply defined, reducing blur a bit makes the photo a lot more usable!
I’ve been LOVING my 11 Pro. It’s not perfect but it’s DAMN fun to shoot with
he is the goat for camera reviews, first 40+ minute video i watched from start to the end since a long time on youtube.
At what point will this mobile “phone” become a mobile “camera” (using calling texting and calling as an exception)
I'm impressed by the technical results, to be sure. I'm nowhere near to running off and replacing my mirrorless, but good show, Apple!
37:24 _Wow_ that's an incredible shot, really impressed by portrait mode here.
Jared, This was the most thorough iPhone 11 camera review I’ve seen on UA-cam.
Excellent inform and thanks! I forwarded this to my daughter who just got the iPhone 11 Pro. Big cameras area great but fitting a good camera into a mobile phone that fits into your pocket or purse has its merits.
Really enjoyed. Amazing shots you made.
23:30 Hahaha one of the funniest things you've ever said!!
yes it is hahahaha
I had a literal LOL moment... at work. 😂😂😂
Wow! I will like the Huawei P30 even more! Total control for the camera ! RAW mode on all sensors,40 or 10MP primary sensor for great low light pics!
You really brought out the best of this phone. Your disclaimers and warnings were very helpful for the avg joe wanting to take good photos.
27:56 - Notice how the skateboarder in the distance is doing what looks like he's about to smash his skateboard ._.
Skaters do that lol they literally substitute clapping for wacking their skateboard on the ground after someone lands a cool trick
if you use focos app you can totally fix the issues you had during portrait mode.
Hey @Jared Polin , curious, but have you ever tried the Sony Xperia 1? I'm curious how a camera maker's phone does as a camera...
Love the amount of air quotes in this video.
*JARED , USE NOKIA 9 IT HAS 5 CAMERAS* *ITA AMAZING FOR RAWS I KNOW YOU'LL LIKE IT*
nope, he would not. You have to shoot raw to make something of the shots there. On iPhone (or Galaxy) you can shoot jpeg to have good pictures
@@7medo7 lol. The f man
Halide Camera app for iPhone works pretty well, it does allow you to use "Depth" mode or Portrait mode, however just with manual settings, not RAW unfortunately
I am happy that you have this ihone 11, because it is mirorlesss!
Jared Polin, you might know by now, if you want to take burst photos, you press the shutter button and swipe left. If you swipe right the video will lock and keeps filming without stopping.
"...like me, a professional photographer"
*can't take the fingers out of frame
You can remove the portrait mode errors on the skateboarder’s shirt in post using the Focos app. It’s free and let’s you adjust the depth data of the photo.
Is Focos app can play with night mode (3s of exposure & apple algorithms) ?
Léopold Lajeunesse so Focos is more of an editing tool for portrait mode photos. As far as I know the app has nothing to do with night mode.
“The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it!” ― Ansel Adams
Or in front if your shooting adult movies
Just a quick tip, you can press the volume up or down(can’t remember which one) to engage shutter
