  • Sergei Shtaniuk goals - 2001 - 2003
A big Belarus centre half, standing at nearly 6' 4" tall. Shtaniuk caught the eye of Stoke manager Gudjon Thordarson in early 2001 and we eventually completed his transfer the following summer. He went on to form an impressive central defensive partnership with another new signing, Peter Handyside, the pair helping us to promotion via the 2002 Second Division play-off final. The Potters spent 2002/03 in a relegation battle but ultimately survived and Shtaniuk won our player of the year award. At the time he was linked with a couple of Premiership sides including Southampton and Portsmouth. Unfortunately personal circumstances meant he had to return to Russia over the summer. He finished his career in 2009 with 71 caps for his country.
