  • Music Marketing Fact: most musicians are great at creativity, but not so great when it comes to applying that creativity towards a business goal. Artists are divergent thinkers - they often miss whats right in front of them while daydreaming...
So, when consulting with artists as a music marketing strategist, there is often little time to go over EVERYTHING they could do to improve their marketing campaigns. Instead, I often try to get artists to just remember these 3 questions...
If you can force yourself to answer these 3 questions BEFORE launching any marketing campaign (and stop when you can't), you'll never waste time, money, or new music on a terrible marketing idea again!

Great content!! Though I don't really agree much on just the "Social status boost" analogy, I think people will care too if you give real values and they appreciate you for who you are and would include you as a part of people in their life or so.

Curious on your thoughts of Tom Macdonalds marketing. In my eyes, he is in 1st place on marketing for any 100% independent artists.

I think hes done a fantastic job but theres few tactical lessons there to be learned - I would credit his rise not to strategy but to content. He picked eyebrow-raising subject matter and dug into it in a provocative way - he was divisive and polarizing and that got him a broad base of attention and exposure.
The lessons you take from Tom Macdonald are applied in the writing phase... IF at all! A lot of people would say the ends do not justify the means with him lol

@@musicmarketing yeah I don't listen to his music and I agree it revolves around controversy. But when I give artist advice lately I tell them to take notes on his social media marketing. What he posts, what he captions stuff, sign up to his mailing list and study it. Great marketing and it's worked. I wanna say his past few music videos were all top 5 trending videos.

I just checked out his page for the first time. Good songs, but can I ask what you think he is doing that makes him 1st place on marketing as an indie? I just saw good songs, but I didn't see anything particularly unique, i'd like to know what i missed. Thanks

I understand how direct marketing works, if you have a product or service that you can charge enough for to make the advertising worth it. How does it work for music? The traditional label model is to spend a bunch of money up front to grow a large audience, because music is a low margin, high volume product. I don't see how that's actually changed, unless you grow organically and/or go viral.

Vapor Trails in my opinion, if you’re going to use direct marketing for music, the only way it makes sense is to figure out how build offers that have high margins, but still maintain demand. For example, a unique collectible, such as a limited run album. Stuff like that simply makes the music have more value and can help you get the margins you need for direct marketing to make sense for your music marketing plans. Again, just my own opinion and thoughts about this 🧐

Do you understand direct marketing, though?
You said "have a product you can charge enough to make the advertising worth it."
Do you think the average product can subsidize marketing costs? Do you think companies pay for their ads w/ the sale of A product?

Full Stack Creative In order for any business to be profitable, revenues have to exceed expenses, so yeah...

    • @musicmarketing
      @musicmarketing  4 роки тому +1

Right, but you dont have to charge more than expenses - you have to generate (x) days value in excess of acquisition costs.
That could happen through multiple products in sequence of value - not just one product. You do not have to charge more than your acquisition costs.
There are three ways to grow a business:
      1. Get more customers
      2. Charge more per transaction (seems to be what youre referring to)
      3. Generate more transactions per customer
Direct marketing involves a combination of all three, guy.

Musician brands dont only have to sell music, so monetizing a music audience doesnt have to be a low margin high volume affair

i love your company’s videos, i always learn a lot when i watch them! i’m an artist and i got a pretty decent following with 26K monthly listeners and 4k active insta followers under my artist name abbot (@abbotwdm on socials), and i’m actually kind of struggling on figuring out how to upscale my marketing for my upcoming album i’m working on. Any videos from your channel that you’d recommend for me to focus on? thanks for putting out great content guys
