- Pardon the time stamp from the old tape. Despite that visual distraction, a match of real historical value for its all-court play and a shift in the Navratilova/Evert rivalry toward a more even W/L dynamic, in a year that ended with different major sources divided as to who was ranked #1 for 1978. Martina took Wimbledon after this match, Chrissie took the US Open, and then beat Martina in the WTA year-end Colgate Championships, as well as their 2 other matches. But this is one of their rivalry's best ever, with Martina winning 6-4 4-6 9-7.
Now that is what I call tennis
I have never seen a better groundstroker, lobber or drop shoter than Evert!
Chris will never see this. I don't know a faster or more direct way to say it, but Merry Christmas Evert Family. Your parents are missed, your fans' thoughts are with you. A song. "We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when..." Thank you all for your love of this sport and for being so nice to see on camera. Missing Jeannie Evert, who I saw play and win at the Southern Open in a VERY hard fought final against Sue Stapp. The typical Evert fight. You are stronger than you know.
Thank you for loading this match at last! I've heard and read about this match as well as their rematch a yr later, both going the full distance and then some. Chris had at least two match points here, but Martina was finally coming into her own on grass. Check out their rematch one full yr later. Wow, these two have really given their best at Eastbourne. The 1979 match has longer points and some INCREDIBLE rallies and scrambling by both.
Wow Chris! 😍
Nice to see Chris today at Wimbledon. She is always the most beautiful Queen of tennis. I miss her and Martina's great tennis.
Chrissy looks amazing.
They were both amazing, as tennis players and as young women
@@DomenicoG1953 I don’t think that’s what he meant.
Nothing to be ashamed of in that match. Amazing shot making.
Chris is my favourite ever ladies player...and my 1st schoolboy crush
Chris is the legend of all history. I hope to see her matches in US open in 1978
Chris Evert, best tennis dress ever, Martina still wearing the sailors outfit.
backless halter dresses. i don't think anyone wears these anymore.
How nostalgic, getting an Eastbourne fix today because we can’t get there this year, so sad, does anyone know who sponsored this 1978 event, I started going to Eastbourne from 1979, I’ve still got the Pilkington Glass mug and letter opener from the 1980s, happy days.
Watching this match again, can't believe Evert couldn't close out the match with 4-1 and 5-3 leads in the final set. Perhaps a ominous sign of the 4-2 lead she also gave away in the final set of their Wimbledon match 3 weeks later. This was the start of the tide turning in their rivalry.
shihlin1 so sad to see Chris doubt herself.
Lesbienne raisonnable? Martina!
@@lenwelch2195 Yes of all the Wimbledon final losses she had this would be the most dissapointing one since she was ahead and folded under pressure.
But she was ‘in love’ at Wimbledon remember, another excuse
Not really because Martina didn’t sustain her form after Wimbledon 1979. Didn’t win another slam until Australian 1981. Turned in 1981-2
Brilliant match!
Feel maybe apart from Serena Williams world will never see such as these two in women's game ever again I feel so privileged I was witness to this tennis being same age!!!
These two had a higher percentage of three setters on grass than on any other surface they played. Oddly Evert has the better of three setters throughout the rivalry but Martina kept winning the ones on grass.
This too is well edited and researched. Thanks for posting. Regards, ROB....
beautiful grass court....
Classic match
I Love Watching Chris Winning And Yes More So over Martina. I wish she had an extra Wimbledon title.
Grass hugely favored Martina’s style of play - to me it’s incredible Chris was as strong as she was on the grass.
Chris hit the ball here even harder tha ever as evert took an early layoff as if she should win expecting Martina to fade as She had done before felt Martina new mental strength and it influenced evert up 4-2 in third - her doubts stayed with her until Martina faded in 1980-1981 first half obgf 81. Then Martina got inn unbeatable shape inn 83 to. Dominate
This was a good match, but the one they played a year later is probably one of their best.
one of their best ..sports greatest rivalry..
In all the years that I've watched Chris play in the wind, this is one of the only times I can recall seeing her lunge after wind-blown bounces. I've always thought of her as the Anti-Wind.
Is it me or does Martina actually hit a modified two handed back hand at 1:42 ??? VERY INTERESTING
' who said Chris cant volley ' -Bud Collins
Excellent match by two wonderful champions :)
Great match in this rivalry, Evert always with great returns, but Navratilova with the great defense.
Chris’s entire career came down to this third set . To this point Chris felt superior to Martina ., even with a 4 month lay off at beginning of 78 . Up to the first match point Chris was hitting sure winners, points she felt she should win . When she didn’t win those first few close match points Chris never again felt superior to Martina . She lost this match And the W final. Then Martina wavered in 1980 for 2 years and Chris took over the number one spot. When Martina came on strong again , it was curtains until Chris realized she had to go to the gym and become an athlete, something she had refused to do. And beat Martina in 85&86 French finals.
Entire career bahahahaha declares the tennis psych
Do you know when Chris took her sabbatical in 77 or 78 ?
Always thought it was end of 77, but you say it was beginning 78 ?
Also, how many months did she take off ?
@@shihlin1 she played just 4 tournament before Wimbledon, starting in March , April and may played world team tennis, then lost Navratilova at eastborne and Wimbledon . After this loss Chris didn’t lose a match beating Martina 3 times including Colgate final ( year end championships). So she took off Dec Jan feb and middle of March played her first tournament? Playing just 4 tournaments before Wimbledon after having 3 months off chrissie was not match tough. She lost 9-7 and 7-5 to Martina in third set after being up 4-1 at eastborne having 3 match points. And then lost Wimbledon after being up 4-2, and 5-4.
@@lenwelch2195 Hey, thanks for the info 👍
