After installing the track on the mast, you can “Mark” the old halyard with a permanent marker, where the track is. Remove the existing halyard with a messenger line, and lay the existing halyard out to measure the length of the half halyard Make your new half halyard, with locking splices at both ends, and check the length next to your “old” halyard The remaining part of the halyard for hoisting the sail can be a much smaller diameter, and I suggest it is full length, so when you remove the sail in the future, you can also remove your high quality half halyard, and store below deck.
