Regarding some of the high-hp-per-CR comments: That's definitely the case in several instances. All the CR values are in line with the guidelines in the DMG, however, so when you have a case of a lower CR monster with higher hp than you'd see out of a comparable monster in the MM, the ToB monster will likely deal less damage per hit, have a lower to-hit bonus, or lack some other ability or trait that keeps the CR balanced. There are a few that are heavy-hitters for their CR band, but that phenomenon exists in the Monster Manual as well, and is the reason there's a sidebar in the DMG talking about being aware of a monster's actual capabilities in addition to its CR value. Bugbears are a great example of this. They can 1-shot a 1st level PC straight to instant death, despite being only CR 1. We definitely did our best to stay in a given CR guideline, but there is some element of having to know your party, and have an eye on what the monster can do to them in that context. The CR/Encounter difficulty system is a guide, not an absolute.
I was looking at the Alehouse Drake in there and I was amazed they gave it the Confusion spell. That's a fourth level wizard spell just slapped on a monster that level 1's are supposed to be dealing with.
I think the average quality of these monster is WAY better than the original monster manual! I guess the best way to describe it is: they look interesting funny and challenging for the players wich, to me, is a huge thing!
Just in case you didn't see it, +DM Nyght ran the numbers comparing various aspects of the Tome of Beasts & the Monsters Manuel (Avg. Min/Max HP, armor class, ability score comparisons, etc.). Check it out here: gyazo.com/f2de3362976ace6eb2b4f0609e779609 Now, what compelled them to do so is beyond me, but it's pretty cool that they compiled the data! -Nerdarchist Ryan
Thanks for reviewing this. I'm interested in the mythological monsters here - particularly to see what they did with the Russian ones (Kikimora, Rusalka, Koshchei). The CR misalignment gives me some pause, because it means they don't scale with the MM monsters. Also, 5e has handled traditional mythological creatures with greater taste than previous editions - hope that's true for this publication also.
You are quite welcome. We have yet tear into the book more thoroughly yet. I'm working my way through Cypher System and will revisit this one as I need monsters or when I'm through that book. -Nerdarchist Dave
to do a quick addition to my first comment. I'd suggest making the box showing you guys a bit smaller so both sides of the book you guys show off or whatever else you're showing off can be seen a bit better
The flip through portion restarts around the half way mark moving the box to give a different view. Will definitely keep in mind for next time. -Nerdarchist Dave
I have the book, but i only have the PDF as of yet, but just from that the quaility oozes through. Its an amazing resource. Cant wait for my print copy. Maybe more Monster BFF's ;)
I actually did the math for the challenge rating and yes they are off so make sure when using the tome you adjust cause they are stronger than there cr
great product, my only complaint is the paper quality of the physical book- i prefer a glossy page (like the phb/dmg/mm). I would have backed the kickstarter but didn't know about it.
Well I was gonna buy it at some point but not yet, but apparently I have no self control and have now ordered it. Thanks for parting my cash from me guys, first arcknight FPM's and now this ;)!
Nerdarchy, out for our wallets! For a noble cause of course! Hehehe Seriously though, I'm glad they keep us appraised of such things, otherwise I might miss out on things like: Wizard's dice, Ultimate Bestiary: Revenge of the Hordes, Tome of Beast, Book of Lairs... Wow, imagine the money I could have saved... DAMN YOU NERDARCHY lol XD
i dont mind the power level here, i find most of the published monsters in the MM and modules to be a bit underwhelming and easily over came. Its refreshing to find some more challenging monsters... saves me the trouble of having to beef up the weaksauce stuff thats already out
Power creep is why i tend to stay away from 3rd party publishers material. ill likely make an exception in this case based on your guys review... then again, i dont tend to have any problem cobbling or reskinning to make my own creatures. it is nice to have some already made and not in the MM... ppl tend to meta the MM stuff a bit in my experience, so i often like using custom monsters to get away from their expectations
Looks like a great resource. Thanks for the heads up on the CR/hp thing. Should I get my hands on this, I'll be sure to look for that. I think my two favorite things mentioned here were the Drakes and the Fey. The Fey were all but ignored (along with Celestials) in the 5E Monster Manual, and with lots of resources on Demon Lords, scattered reference to Arch Devils, it seemed only logical to have more on some Archfey. Mind you, they did not really reference the Archfey mentioned in the Player's Handbook, instead inserting others (along with the Disney Snow Queen....ugh) Drakes haven't seen the light of day since...what...4E? I also really dug the constructs. More please! When Volo's Guide to Monsters comes out, there should be a ton of choice for any DM.
All in all I'm happy with it. There is a lot cool stuff, but some power creep as well. Also excited waiting about Volo's. We are gonna go from content starved to an over load of choices. Not that I'm complaining. -Nerdarchist Dave
A note on the Snow Queen, she actually has been around in the Midgard Campaign Setting for quite a long time now, and she's most certainly not an Elsa clone. I will say without argument that the art is very evocative of "Frozen." The character, though, is about as un-Elsa as it gets.
A Giant Spider has a high Charisma because it is not easily intimidated or controlled. But, yeah, the Kobold Press creatures tend to have higher stats, and more powerful abilities. GMs want to be careful, and tone things down when appropriate. But that is true with any 5E creature
I had to think which reference we made at first. Dresden lore is ingrained into our consciousness the way LOTR is in others at this point. -Nerdarchist Dave
This book is awesome, there's alot a fey and undead monsters, which i think the 5e MM lacks of.I got the PDF for 40$ CAN..Well worth the money,if you ask me.Peace
I saw the art for the bear folk and was blown away, I know it's more of a monster manual but are the bear folk statted out for a pc race or just npc/villainous/monsterous characters. Would pay the 40$ bucks but I'm only really interested in that one monster and since im not really planning on running a campaign anytime soon I can't justify the cost.
I could've sworn there was a section that gave the stat adjustments for all of the anthropomorphic animals in the book, sort of like how the DMG (or MM?) have stat adjustments and racial abilities for the various humanoids. So, it wouldn't have a full-on PC write-up, but will get you "close enough". -Nerdarchist Ryan
The very last page (before the index) is a list of ability score adjustments and traits for the "humanoid" type monsters from the Tome of Beasts, and also for the PC-races from Kobold Press' "Heroes" line of books. Nerdarchist Ryan is correct that it's just like the DMG page. Now, the intent of that is so that you can take, say, a Veteran NPC from the Monster Manual, or the Bandit Lord from the Tome, then make him a bearfolk. It gives you a good idea of what to do, but you'll have to do some tweaking to keep things on the up and up for balance. Several monster traits aren't suitable to port directly over to PCs, and that'll require some massaging. Although, I HAVE considered doing a PC race treatment of the bearfolk for the Kobold Press blog... maybe that'll bump up the priority list...
Hi guys I'm really into D&D 5E but since I'm from Venezuela I can't affort any handbook or minis, I would like to have this book for my D&D campaings, could you help me with the PDF version? I'm asking to almost everyone because I really wish but can't buy it by myself =(
I think templating is so well-ingrained, at this point, that it diminishes the value of a work of this magnitude. You could publish a list of monster "ideas" and a DM could put the same monster together in 5 minutes.
While true not everyone wants to do that. Plenty of DMs rather just have the resource. That being said both work neither is right or wrong. Each individual will do what works best for them. -Nerdarchist Dave
It wouldve been hillarious if you had the hands of like 6 people on each side of the book flipping through it. Like, just random and unexplained. "Why are there so many fingers!?" we would all ask ourselves...
I never saw the point of challenge ratings. Can't DMs figure that stuff out for themselves? I don't need the game company to tell me what will constitute a challenge for my players.
5:20. The guy on the right makes an intelligent statement. 5:32. The guy in the middle says something so stupid it hurts my brain. It's like you have one smart guy and the guy in the middle just spewed nonsense and idiocy.
The thing I always worry about with unofficial stuff is that it won't fit with anything else, and as nice as the art looks from what little I can see of it in the video, this looks absolutely awful. Hey, are you running a campaign with kobolds, giant spiders, were-tigers, and lamias? Here's a Victorian-era steampunk town guard from Ultima! And Hellboy with an underbite wearing a mining lamp on his head! Plus you say everything is overpowered compared to the MM and has a lot of one-shot fuck-you monsters and it makes me think they were designed by a couple kids going "COOL!" at each other every fifteen seconds like some bad 80s commercial. So like, there's this enemy, right? It's a spider (COOL!), but it has a dragon head instead (COOL!) and if it looks at you it EATS YOUR SOUL (COOL!) and it breathes acidfirelightning (COOL!) and... I really want to like this, but I can't seem to take it seriously. I wouldn't be surprised to see a crocoduck in there, and as I say that I see 'Eel Hound'. Did they use a random word generator to just mash random things together? Best of luck to whoever gets that book, but it definitely isn't for me. I'd have to start an entirely new campaign and use only monsters from this thing, because they just don't fit with anything else, and buying one book just to throw another book away makes no sense to me.
Using terminology like "unofficial stuff", I'd like to point-out that Kobold Press has written at least two modules that were put out under the WOTC brand. Most of the campaign module books were written by Kobold Press or Green Ronin. While we want to be upfront about Pro's/Cons, I think the book has more going for it in the Pro column than in Con. -Nerdarchist Ryan
Sorry you didn't like our creative choice we've got several just didn't use them. We'll keep it in mind for next time. Thanks for the feedback. -Nerdarchist Dave
This is again the problem I have with hit points. An idea is to keep hp low and increase AC and saves for small, fragile creatures. It doesn't matter if you can crush a fairy with a single swat if hitting it is almost impossible in the first place.
Just waiting to see all of the DMs that don't allow WotC additional material and optional rules in their games to say how they'll be using this against their characters. As always, as the DM it's your game to play it how you want to but at least have the balls to admit when you are being hypocritical. I agree with you guys that it looks good but will require a little tweaking.
+James Fenton Yeah, from what I've heard per the Dawnforged Cast interview with the publisher and a designer, some degree of playtesting was done, but not so much on the higher CR end. -Nerdarchist Ryan
+Nerdarchy. It's honestly not that big of a deal though. A good DM can look at it and make any adjustments needed pretty easily. Even the permanent disabilities aren't permanent in the D&D world.
To be fair, pricing a book filled with misspellings and typos on every other page at 40-50$ is ridiculous. In the 5th edition dmg, it mentions that there are intelligent ghouls in the shadowfell. Good canon place to use the ToBs ghouls
This was probably designed for their Midgard setting which may be a reason for the design of the monsters.
Yes most of the monsters had a Midgard side bar.
-Nerdarchist Dave
That's exactly what the writers said. It's based heavily in Midgard, but general enough to work anywhere.
got this book on preorder, thanks guys for keeping me on the up and up.
You welcome. It's part of what we do.
Nerdarchist Dave
Are you guys planning on checking out Ultramodern 5? It's fun, but lacks weight. The ladder system is funky and great.
to do a quick addition to my first comment. I'd suggest making the box showing you guys a bit smaller so both sides of the book you guys show off or whatever else you're showing off can be seen a bit better

Plus, if it ends up harder than desired, it's always easier to tone down rather than have to beef up a Monster :)
I will prob use these straight out of the book save for the permanent effects.
Same here. I'll use them as either higher or lower cr monsters is all.
-Nerdarchist Dave
Looks like a great resource. Thanks for the heads up on the CR/hp thing. Should I get my hands on this, I'll be sure to look for that.

Nerdarchy This abundance of choice might well reduce the need for so many re-skins. All in all, I'm for more choice in the monster market.
A note on the Snow Queen, she actually has been around in the Midgard Campaign Setting for quite a long time now, and she's most certainly not an Elsa clone.

Damnit guys, watch it with the Dresden files references! I'm only five books in!
spoiler alert: harry is a wizard!
Spoiler alert- Dumbledore dies...
I had to think which reference we made at first. Dresden lore is ingrained into our consciousness the way LOTR is in others at this point.

Probably not. Don't sweat it. We very much appreciate the thought.

so the worm demon lord look just like a card from magic the gathering it has delirium and is a rare from shadows over inastradra

Think its 9/13 if memory right
"I heard yo found the MM a little weakling"
Anything particularly good for an Epic Encounter?
there is few high cr monsters- dragons, demon lords, and arche devils off the top of my head.
Nerdarchist Dave
I might have to buy the book
Video in video action!
I never saw the point of challenge ratings. Can't DMs figure that stuff out for themselves? I don't need the game company to tell me what will constitute a challenge for my players.
sunsin1592 i agree. It's only a guideline for less experienced DMs i feel.
It’s a guideline but I mostly never need to refer to it.
Dude. LANTERN DRAGONETTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PERFECT WIZARD FAMILIAR
Until you read it.
Please, go on, you've peaked my interest! Why aren't they, in the end, good familiars?!?
Just gotta read their full text. It should be way cooler.
this looks awesome
OBS Going hard huh?
nope just some editing magic. We are looking at obs for recording live plays.
Nerdarchist Dave
Cool. Thought yall were using it here. Had to ask
oh no the link to buy it has invisibility!
No worries I just cast dispel magic on it.
Nerdarchist Dave
+Nerdarchy thank god now i can charge forward and take on the new threats ahead

Pretty please get a camera mount for a more stable video of books. The constant shaking really made a good video horrible to watch :/
Sorry you didn't like our creative choice we've got several just didn't use them. We'll keep it in mind for next time. Thanks for the feedback.
-Nerdarchist Dave
Loved the video, but the continuing shaking made me seasick O.o Need this book though and thanks for some really nice pointers to look out for :)
I didn't know anything about it until this video....i'd still rather wait for the free pdf though.
One of these reasons we do it. So you mean until you can steal it? Pirating is bad for the hobby.
-Nerdarchist Dave
This is again the problem I have with hit points. An idea is to keep hp low and increase AC and saves for small, fragile creatures. It doesn't matter if you can crush a fairy with a single swat if hitting it is almost impossible in the first place.
Nerdarchy ARRRRRG! lol no I just think the hobby would do better if the material was cheaper. think of this as "passive and peaceful protest"
+clericofchaos1 It's a luxury, not a necessity. You're just a scumbag thief, not Robin Hood.
Jon Tyndall lol nonsense, if I were a thief i'd be hacking bank accounts.

Feels like they could have done with some community beta testing as a reward for some backers
+Graal Otonami That would have been a great idea. I would assume they did some sort of playtesting but either not enough or not the right kind.
Love the book, but in other videos like this can you guys just do a voice over and get off the goddamn screen so we can see!!!!
To be fair, pricing a book filled with misspellings and typos on every other page at 40-50$ is ridiculous.
