I find it funny that round 1 opponent got confused about their One Ring preventing them from Tome Scouring themselves while playing a One Ring variant that has barely legible rules text.
13:40 you say this isn't a chalice matchup, but it seems to me that their deck cannot beat chalice on 1. Their core engine is 1-mana cantrips and 1-mana twiddles, no?
Yeah I was probably defaulting to the speed of the format and that Chalice is usually in sideboards strictly for 0. It was likely correct to have vs. the slower combo deck.
I love Pirates somehow are one of the most common tribes for cEDH playable cards. So random, and I'm here for it. Also, shout out to Pirate Ship existing all the way back to Alpha. I miss the "Summon Ship" days ;)
Not all that surprising - pirates are thematically linked to treasures, a mechanic that CEDH players love to abuse, and they're in Grixis, colors that live on little disruptive creatures.
My Initial thoughts about this deck (before the games) is, Would this perform better than humans? I love these tribal interactive decks; It seems this list is very similar to what humans could do, but you're giving up some of the anthem power in exchange for some more card advantage (Breeches, Staunch crewmate, Ragavan). I'm looking forward to seeing how the games play out!
@@justass3001 Crimson Fleet Commodore did see some play after its release and was relevant against decks playing Fiery Cannonade. At least until Breath Weapon was released.
That first opponent, playing a deck the great Bosh hasn't seen is truly a understatement to the level of respect he had for that deck when I'd bet he knows almost any innovation when it really makes ripples in any of the formats he plays. Even though the Marauder would've negated the Thassa's Oracle etb trigger, if I'm not mistaken.
13:28 - can you elaborate on why the twiddle/tome scour storm deck isn't a chalice matchup? (I've obviously got an opinion, but the curiosity is genuine)
I think the biggest problems with this pirate deck is there is no sort of early game stall, like freebooter and larcenist are just a bit too slow and don't have enough impact to the board unlike something like thalia. Also there doesn't really seem to be any win con other than hoping your opponents stop playing lol. Like breeches can get a ton of value going but is absurdly easy to deal with and the opponent isn't going to care about a 4 turn clock of pirates swinging on turn 5. It's also not fast enough to run under slower decks. I feel like there could be something there with pirates but this list definitely is not it. Just made a list, it is izzet mostly with a couple black splashes that I might take out but they make sideboarding better and faster. and a much lower cost faster gameplan. Essentially it is a weird artifact token pirate spam synergy deck that actually seems to work well. I feel like even against interaction unless going against hard control it can get there. Gonna play test it a bit and stuff but seems promising. On turn 4 I am swinging for 24 split amongst 4 creatures, who base stats are only like 2/2s After editing and testing a bit, could definitely just be a really good pioneer instead of modern deck like you said lol.
Why doesn't Void Mirror see game play? It stops Evoke creatures, Cascade/Discover, and free spells. For two its more protection than a Chalice of the Void.
@@Dracomandriuthus that interaction against Void Mirror isn't going to be a Force of Vigor that was cast for free though. Chalice of the Void is just going to eat that removal spell
@@crovax1375 This would imply that your deck also doesn't play any Evoke spells either, since if you did your Void Mirror would lock out your cards too. You can obviously choose when the Void Mirror goes down, but it creates tension with any free spells you run, so you really can't run many. There are decks that don't run Evoke creatures but that's generally because they are fast and want to win on turn 3, so spending 2 mana on turn 2 to drop an artifact that may not even do anything is not really desirable. It's a very situational card and you would need to construct a deck with it in mind. You can't just plop it into any deck and say "you can't cast free spells" without considering the free spells you also won't be casting. Really the only thing you would care about playing it against is Cascade and Chalice deals with that for 0, and that lets you use as many Evoke creatures as you like in your own deck.

Hahahahaha
I honestly hate these crazy alternate art cards. I like it when I can easily recognise a card across the table
@@mpepp9 Agree
"You've gotta be the worst deck ive ever heard of" ah, but you have heard of me!
I know Unsettled Mariner is a shapeshifter with changeling, but it's a MARINER! That's still pretty close to a pirate.
For real, was going to comment on that flavor win! Perfectly fits in artwork wise into this deck :)
IT’s everything man. It’s a sliver,human,dinosaur, merfolk, pirate..
FINALLY pirate stompy! The deck that took legacy by storm!
That's a deep cut and I like it.

I was thinking the same thing
came to the comments to say this exact thing
Oof
Round 1 was "twiddlestorm". I think chalice on 1 bricks that deck.
I wonder why in game 1 chalice wasn't an option? if you chalice on 1 you will probably put down 50% of the deck
I dont understand that either
Match 1, why not board in the chalices? It didn't look like they could win through a chalice on 1
I feel like Malcolm would be really good here.
Pirates was my first EDH deck, excited to see how they do in Modern
What Commander? Beckett Brass?
@@piercearora7681 yes, way back when Ixalan first came out
me too : )
That round one is a Bryant Cook archetype…twiddle Storm
That round two deck was nuts
Wow that's crazy. First 3 rounds going against what seem to just be piles and just doing terribly. And I was excited for pirates toi
Chalice is good against twiddle storm

Short answer: no. Long answer: also no.
These kinds of tribal decks just aren’t Modern playable, with or without Fury in the format.
Your round one opponent was playing Bryant Cook's Twiddle storm deck
Shame that pirate-clasm isn't huge in the current metagame! (I forgot the official name of the card)
fiery cannonade
Fiery Cannonade, the Standard classic!
That’s the only name I’d accept
It is funny that the 3 mana pyroclasms are only played in pauper where neither dragons, nor pirates are relevant types

It is. I assessed it wrong on the fly not being super familiar with the deck.

In g1, could you cast the ponder from their graveyard, still needed blue mana to cast it.
Daredevil says you can use any mana

2 mana is more than 0 mana, and the cascade decks can find interaction if you wait until t2 to deploy your hate.
