- The Shell Game《千王之王》(謝賢、汪明荃、任達華、楊群、曾慶瑜、嚴慧明主演): 故事發生於1930年的廣州，當時賭業蓬勃，土豪洪彪（黃新飾）、洪豹（郭鋒飾）父子企圖吞併廣州全部賭場，幸得有「南神眼」之稱的羅四海（謝賢飾）鎮壓搗亂，但洪彪父子因此而懷恨在心。譚小棠（汪明荃飾）是當時著名花旦，而弟譚昇（任達華飾）因在賭場出千而被四海所擒，小棠為救弟與四海談判，期後更發展出一段感人的愛情故事。洪彪陷害四海不遂，遂聘有北方千王之稱的「北千手」卓一夫（楊群飾）與四海鬥法，結果兩人打成平手。洪彪唯有改以收買南北千王於旗下。在一次鴉片買賣中，南北千王被洪彪利用，幸得小棠姊弟相救。可惜兩人最終逃不過洪彪父子的種種陰謀，四海因致雙目失明，而一夫則被暗藏禍心的養女卓莉（曾慶瑜飾）挑斷手筋。為報血海深仇，兩人決集千術之精華授予譚昇，而譚昇因此得以擊敗卓莉，但是卓莉卻因她的兒子遭譚昇殺害而精神崩潰，從而看到幻象從山坡上跌下身亡；譚昇得到「千王之王」的稱號成為最終的贏家……

"Everything rustles to him who is guilty/Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind". Perfectly encapsulated here in Hoong Phorw's behavioural jitters.
In truth I find Phorw's sudden transformation from a vicious, ruthless killer to a weak-kneed, neurotic and trembling 'train wreck' shadow of his former self, somewhat at the mercy of his equally malicious wife Siew Lei less than credible. The killer streak deserting him overnight? Humbug! Even with the return of Lor Shei Hoi (blinded of sight)/Cheok Yuk Fu (crippled wrists)/Tham Seng notwithstanding. He still has his loyal henchmen at his beck and call, his cordon of bodyguards, right?. How hard is it to 'dispose' of his unfaithful wife (secretly) with no trace in sight afterwards since street killings at this time were common occurrences enough. Easy enough I say! His reason not to do so despite her marital infidelity and repeated demands for a divorce because of the son's welfare is ostensible, granted. Although it's also fair game that Phorw could have engaged professional caregivers in place of a "disappeared mummy". Sigh....even professional killers are beholden to fatherly love/parental instincts (cross reference Hollywood's "The Godfather's trilogy" and one of Chow Yun Fat's movies when he hesitated and then abandoned his mission to assassinate a target when at the critical moment the intended victim is greeted by his toddler son).
(It is increasingly becoming a cinematic trope of professional/contract killers storyline that family bonds are seen as one's Achilles heel/emotional weak spot, to be exploited by every other party in the know).
In episode 20, Hoong Biew's suicide by pulling the revolver's trigger on himself also raises questions of the script's authenticity. He could well have aimed the weapon and discharged it instead at his daughter-in-law (Siew Lei) under the cover of his blanket even as he is stroke-bedridden, for a measure of revenge/perverted 'justice', if you will. The fact that it was she herself who handed him the revolver AND the fruit knife, taunting him to kill himself is also up for severe critique, I maintain. Suspend your disbelief, viewers. Thanks.
