Guy Lombardo maybe made the song US known for new years. But if there were versions of the song in various languages in the trenches so all could join the tune. I think it's fair to say it was known before Guy did his work.

It's Auld Lang Syne, it is not pronounced with a "Z"
This ignores almost everything about the history of the world, the place it came from, why it is as written, etc.
