  • The long awaited entry into the fan favorite series has finally arrived, and it's time to determine whether I get burned alive or not. Vote in the comments on if I should see the flames (or throw bricks through my windows at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico).
On a serious note, to all of you who have watched these videos, thank you so much. There's been nothing more fun then getting to interact with some of you in the comments and getting to see that my work (shabby as it is) reach more people. The Educated Guide to Hunter X Hunter will be going on a bit of a break, mostly since the Chimera Ant Script is kicking my ass, but it will return and there will be plenty of other videos along the way.

Greed island is when a story about adventure is most at home

I agree with you in theory. The aura of adventure is probably one of my favorite aspects of Greed Island and I think it was a good idea to sandwich a more lighthearted arc between Yorknew and Chimera Ants. I just don't think the adventure itself is all that compelling, mostly down to the Bomber stuff. Most of my other complaints are heavily exaggerated for comedy but I legitimately can't stand Genthru and his pals.

I'm glad at least someone appreciates those openings that I spend way too much time on.
I've rewritten the Chimera Ant script at least 12 times now and it's starting to give me nightmares. I don't think it's length can be contained. If I dissappear completely and the police want to know what happened, it's because making the video drove me insane.

considering how much you like the Spider, i'd love a review on the Succession War so far once you've reviewed the Election! ;o

oh also, it WAS the Greed Island guy with the Nen Exorcism that got rid of Kurapika's Nen Curse lol, idk how you came to the conclusion that he didn't do it.

I do plan on getting to the Succession War after the election, and I've got a whole lot to say on that one. I'm kinda struggling to imagine writing the script for that video cause I don't even know where to start.
As far as the Nen exorcism goes, I am aware that the guy was the one who got rid of the curse, but I think I wrote it that way cause I thought it was funnier and I was shit posting for most of the Greed Island video. If I could go back and change that, I probably would.
      Thanks for watching!

Gonna be honest I didn't really watch the whole video, but I assume most of it is complaining about Genthru so here's my take on Genthru:
I definitely think that he's a sub-par antagonist...for Hunter x Hunter. The thing is that he's a very standard shonen antagonist essentially sandwiched in between two of the greatest antagonist groups in any work of fiction I've seen. So, I think that's part of it.
I definitely think that more work could've been done on his character - especially his two goons who basically got zero characterization of their own - but I think that narratively, Genthru served his purpose very well. Genthru succeeded in pushing Gon almost to his limits and giving us a taste of his character to come in CA, while also being downright evil enough to make it pretty cathartic to watch Gon beat the shit out of him.
Anyways, Greed Island definitely isn't my favorite arc, but its merits in expanding nen, indirectly characterizing Ging, further developing Gon and Killua, and *the dodgeball game* are really good, I think.
Also, I think the anime does Greed Island really dirty. Compressing *66 chapters* into just 17 episodes is almost a crime. I love the manga version a lot more; it has a ton of really fun games and stuff that just make it a good time, even though there isn't a massive amount of substance introduced with the new characters.

In a move that shocked news organizations and world governments alike, I actually only talked about Genthru for about a minute. He is the worst part of the arc, but it doesn't take long to explain why. He just kinda sucks. I definitely think he's much worse than a standard Shonen antagonist, since they usually have at least one distinguishable personality trait other than evil. I have a lot of other problems with the arc, but most are pretty minor. It's still my least favorite arc in the series, but a lot of what I talked about was played up for comedy.
In terms of good, I agree 100% with Ging's characterization being fantastic and the dodgeball game is great in the manga but way too slow in the anime.
