Your a BRAVE Man , taking that Custer apart like that, not knowing what you'd find behind there or possibly opening up a "Can of Worms" and creating more problems. I've have problems in the past with electronic gauges and I disconnected the Battery, waited a while, then reconnected the Battery.. the idea being to "Reboot" the computer, and I got lucky, it worked. Worth a try maybe.. Good Luck
Thanks Dan, that is an idea, I will definitely try that, I forgot that basically everything has to do with a computer. Thanks very much for the hint!!!
thanks for the video mate. it helped me a lot. i have to change all the light bulbs to the instrument cluster except those warning lights, and i didn't know how i can take it out. thumbs up!
Yes I guess that is the best solution, I followed some other advice like cleaning the speed sensor on the differential, it works after that but it was only coincidence, it still works sometimes and sometimes not, up to now it is still the same
Hi there. I have the same problem with my Custer. It started to happened after I parked the car for 2 years and the battery was dead. Then I replaced the battery and nothing was working, neither the rpm, the speedometer or the temperature. The first time happened to me I was trying for hours to find out why is happening, so I removed the Custer and I was unplugged and plugged back again and again, but nothing. So I took apart the Custer all the plastics very carefully but I didn’t do anything, so I put it back together. And after this it worked. Since then, it happened again and did the same process every time, to unplug and plug it back again and again until to work. From the repeating unplug and plug the odometer became zero. I remember I was driving for a few days without anything working. So I had two choices 1) to visit a specialist in Custer and try to repair it if he could find the damage or to find another Custer. So I bought the new secondhand one and I have it. I tried to install it but to work properly needs reprogramming. Now is parked again, and will be at least for a year. I hope when I go back don’t have the same problems. That’s my long story shortly.
Thanks for sharing your story, very interesting, I watch ones a channel that show the problem, according to the guy it is a capacitor inside the cluster that pack up, since I am not electronic I did not try to fix it, a lady replied it is the speed sensor on the diff, if the speedo did not receive a signal none of the meters will work, I tried one day to find the sensor but it is difficult to get in there. Mine is still the same, work just enough so that I always have an idea of my fuel level. Thanks for watching
For the fuel and the temperature you need to solder on a 100ohm resistor. That car doesn't like to left too long as it kills the battery and when you reconnect it you have that problem with gauges not working. Cheers
Friend, it's been 5 years since you posted it. Did you find the ultimate solution. Afaik from watching youtube videos, if you take apart the back of the instrument clutch there is a small motor behind every gauge. And from what i've seen, they say the winding of the spring mechanisms inside the motors gets loose, so that the gauge pin doesnt touch the initial position of the spring. The 100Ohm resistor method is not a right way to solve it because it only sort of bypasses the original setting of the instrument cluster. If you search it, you can find the guy take apart the motor and wind the spring properly again and it works great.

Hi thanks very much that is useful information because I have still this problem, did the sensor sits back at deferential? Thanks so much I will do that for sure and let you know, thanks for the comment.
Yes Brain, on the differential sit a sensor, that indicate the speed, clean that sensor and everything works again, none of the meters work if the speedo does not work, the problem is not in the dash. Good luck and thanks for watching
I guess it is one of 3, a break pad warn to limits warning, a bulb has blown somewhere or low water in the windscreen water tank, not sure of which one you refer to

Hi Gio, I guess you will have change the temp sensor, I don't think you can just calibrate it, MB forums is probably the guy's to ask. sorry I can not help with this one
Not sure Yousef, I would think thee wiring harness to the two connectors at the back will differ. Any Mercedes forum guys on google might help you with this one, thanks for watching
I will see, hopefully somebody gives a hint, I will not easy replace the car, it have now 278 000 thousand Kilometers on and use no oil or water, these machines run 500 000 easy, I might buy a newer one at a point but will keep this one, next year it is vintage, 20 years old then I can take it to car shows. Thanks for the comment
Het jy ook die probleem van die meters wat net af en toe werk, indien so lees die reply van Tina hier bo, die probleem is 'n vuil sensor wat in die dif sit, skroefdit uit en maak skoon, probleem nie by die instrument cluster nie.
Nice video Jan, clear simple steps, I would never have thought of attempting it but you made it look easier. all the best matey

Thanks for the very informative video. You may need a new cluster pod or find an online shop who repair MB instrument clusters.

Its a sticky gauge causing this.. there are bushes to put over thr gauge to ptevent it from sticking..its s common problem with the w202
Your problem is in the gas tank, you have a float that sends a signal to your fuel gauge, that will fix your problem.
That is interesting, thanks I will have to go into this, thanks so much
Thx bro
Is that facelift? And where is Check engine light?
Hi, know it is not the face-lift one, I don't think the '97 models had and engine check light, not sure

I need to lower my steering wheel before we yank the cluster out. The wheel won't got down. Its not an automatic.
