Not every post apocalypse love story needs to end tragically. It's cliché and played out, at this point. Funny how so many people expected this relationship to end that way, yet it ended like every love story should.

My problem is that they basically added a happy ending to a not so happy world. Bill being a crazy asshole with traps everywhere more accurately depicted how a human by themselves would be like for that many years. No to mention in the game, they were partners but had didn't have a great relationship as Frank left in his suicide note because he got bit. I think they catered to non gameplayers with the direction that this episode went.

@@killerx4227 Everyone is fooled by what happened in the episode... Wait until the end of season 1 and you'll know that this episode gives zero to no relevance to the actually story... At least in the game Bill's Town shows the eerie ambiance of an abandoned town that can be explored post apocalypse. For instance, the dialogue in the vinyl record store is simple but hits hard. Exploring Bill's Town was satisfying yet scary because I still thought a clicker would pop out of no where, which it does before it runs into a trap. That's the true reality of this world, infected could be anywhere at anytime and they watered it down with this backstory. I love that there was a backstory but this is something that should have stayed true to the game. This was nothing but a "filler" episode.

The main point behind them not being called zombies is the fact that they are not dead. The infected are still living, just not in control of their body and minds. Joel notices that there is a hanged corpse in the room. Joel asks if Bill knows the man. It does; it is the body of Frank, Bill's former partner. He had hanged himself after becoming infected, not wanting to become a monster. Despite trying not to show it, Bill is saddened by her death. Joel finds a suicide note near Frank's body, in which Frank tells Bill that he hated him. Bill is puzzled by this, but again tries his best not to show it. Throw away the note after reading it.
I guess you were right. If I try to leave this city, I will die. Still, it's better than spending another day with you.
Frank lived in Lincoln with Bill. The pair survived in the city for nearly twenty years together, fortifying it against infected attacks and ensuring that any wayward survivors did not enter the city. Bill described Frank as his old partner, someone he cared about. Despite this, Frank grew tired of Bill's survival methods. Because of this, he left Bill, stealing many supplies and a car battery from a military truck at the high school on the way to the truck at his hideout. On the way back, Frank was bitten several times by a horde of infected.
He hanged himself at home so as not to succumb to the Cordyceps brain infection. Frank left Bill a note telling him how he "hated his guts", getting tired of Bill's ways and how he ran the town.

Interesting that on the show in the note Bill wrote for Joel, he tells him he never liked him, but he respected him. It is a nod to the note Frank left in the game telling Bill that he never liked him the difference being in the show Bill was probably joking about not liking Joel while in the game Frank was serious about hating Bill. In fact, he got bit because he left tp get away from Bill. In the game Bill crumpled up the note and threw it away while Joel did the same on the show.

39:27 Frank didn't have cancer. Per the showrunner, Craig Mazin, he was suffering from a degenerative neuromuscular disorder, either ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or MS (multiple sclerosis). Considering the symptoms of either, I can definitely understand Frank coming to the decision to only have one more day of the suffering.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by a combination of environment and inherited genes; although, some unlucky few are destined to have it simply due to genetics. ALS is fatal, with a life expectancy of 2 - 5 years, with a steady decline in functions from the time when symptoms present. Typical symptoms are difficulty walking, weakness in the legs and hands, slurred speech, trouble swallowing, muscle twitches, and cognitive behavioral changes. It also destroys nerve cells, which can affect breathing as it worsens.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system of the body, including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. There's no cure for MS. While in itself it isn't fatal, a sufferer can have difficulties that lead to death. Major MS symptoms are depression, pain, vertigo, bowel and bladder problems, weakness, vision difficulties, stiffness, numbness, and walking difficulties.

While it's not said ALS is the likely culprit. I've had some experience with MS my mom had it and she was 28 years from diagnosis to death and I had an uncle who had it and he was ~15 years from diagnoses to death. ALS is much quicker something like 5 years from diagnosis to death typically. That said the symptoms of both diseases look very similar and the scene with Bill putting Frank into bed hit me hard as I had been there and done that with my mom.

Obviously, their narrative function is the same as zombies, but you’ll never hear that word ever said in the series. If you stab a human in the brain they will also die, which is why the Infected will die as well. The Infected actually make pained expressions on their faces unlike typical zombies because they aren’t dead. Small details like this make them different and more terrifying.

Yep! In the game, you meet somebody in the beginning when Joel and Tess are traveling to find Robert and he’s infected. He asks for Joel to mercy kill him so that he wouldn’t turn into one of those things. At first, I thought that was the typical “don’t want to be a zombie” kind of thing, but after reading and hearing more about them and seeing Runners up close when they are in their “docile” state, I thought it would be absolutely terrifying to have some foreign entity completely control your body while it mutates and transforms your body into some kind of horror monstrosity. Especially when you see the Bloaters 🤢 🤮

No they're not zombies, for the simple fact that they're not dead or undead, they're humans being mind-controlled by the fungi.
They are killed when you kill or destroy the fungus not the brain, that's why clickers in episode 2 didn't die from headshots.

"Stab them in the brain and they die" hahaha I giggled at that. Yes that is true that they die if you stab them in the head, but that's not the only way they can die. The fungus needs a LIVING host. If you remember, in the game you sneak up on some infected and you can strangle them to death as well. They're living and the fungus controls their body from their brain and their muscles. It's pretty terrifying because that's a real thing that cordyceps do to insects.

Do want to add, it wasn't because of Joel and tess that raiders showed up. Joel just warned them about the inevitable. They managed to keep up a connection and trades reliably for 3 years and they made it a long time with no incidents. That aside, their story is what so many zombie shows and movies miss out on and that's the love. Their story ended in death but the whole way through it was all about love and life and teaching each other to enjoy the world they were in despite the circumstances of it. Even through the end of the world they kept their humanity and found a way to grow old which in itself was incredible

It's not a big deal to me, but I understand why people would prefer the infected not be called zombies. Until they actually die and are used by the fungis to spread spores, the people who are infected are living. Even the clickers, gross as they look, are still living. Zombies are reanimated dead. The people have been killed one way or another, but their bodies still move.

@PanonAzeroth just because people choose to refer to something as a "zombie" does not mean it truly is one with respect to the true meaning of the term. I personally refer to people who constantly stare into their phones as tech zombies, but I do so only because they resemble actual zombies with their fixation on their devices. The formal/true definition of the word is that of a reanimated corpse. Like I said, I'm not super concerned about the use of the term in relation to TLoU. But let's not make things up just to suit our own argument. All I'm saying is that I understand the point people are making.

What were the "terrible things" Joel and Tess did? Well, Joel says with the utmost certainty that "there will be raiders, they will come at night, quiet and armed, and they'll beat the fence and the traps". You can safely assume that's something he has done before: come at night, beat the fence and the traps, wipe everyone out quietly. Considering he's a smuggler even other smugglers fear (as stated in episode 1), Joel must be a menace, even in this world.

The third episode is definitely my favourite so far (up to 5th episode). You just didn't expect this kind of story (and being a gay romantic story) to be depicted in such detail. The relationship dynamic between Frank and Bill is so natural and effortless. What's so brilliant about the script is that the writer dropped so many small details so viewers can just make their own inferences of what is happening. For example, they never mentioned about Frank's disease (but audience gets it by how Frank has lost most of the mobility issue). In Bill's letter to Joel, he mentions about how he hated the world until that special someone comes to his life--this reflects his hatred of the world as a closet-gay man in a small country town. Plus, the back story of the radio which comes from Frank reaching out to Tess. Brilliant piece of work. And yes, I got teary eyes as well :o
