    The Octave Spread: Jerald, I wish from the day I started piano I would have started playing with an octave between my left and right hand. I know that the mechanics of songs often force this, but if I had started there I believe I would have learned faster, and improvisation would have seemed far more natural earlier. One brain, two halves, two hands, and one great instructor. Thanks Jerald. Peace! Dale

    @jerald, I have a few of your books including this one, but I am still quite confused where I could get more insight on how you expand these and start to improvise or arrange as you call it. I never really know "how" to change the rhythm of the melody to match the pattern, or vise versa, alternatively, I never really know what kind or type of scale to use in different scenarios. Thanks for your help and great video :)

      Marcel Robichaud, Thanks for your comment. I have actually created a course that I am launching next week (June 22nd, 2020), and that course is going to have me going through each of my books from my Essential Piano Exercises course - a step by step approach where I teach every scale, chord, mode, left hand patterns, right hand patterns, licks, grooves, rhythms, etc., and will teach how to learn the music theory, improvise, arrange, and even compose music. New videos will be added to the course every Monday and Friday until January 1st, 2021 (after that new videos will be added as part of a monthly subscription). I am creating videos for my book Essential Piano Exercises starting this month and will then add videos for my book 100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know followed by several others coming up later this summer, fall, and next spring. You can learn more at www.essentialpianoexercises.com/ - In this course I will be primarily focusing on music theory, improvisation, and composition. The site explains more about it. I hope that helps out a little. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks - Jerald

    1. Great! Now I can't listen to a song without looking for one of the 100 left hand patterns (LOL) Thanks, Jerald!
    2. As a 65 year-old legally blind man, I can read music, or I can play the music, but until now I couldn't read music and play music at the same time. By learning each pattern for the left hand I no longer have to read the left hand notes. By playing the melody with my pinky I can learn and memorize most complete melodies in just a few minutes. By adding the chord to the right hand pinky suddenly I've got it going on. This is an awesome way to learn to play songs by ear.
    3. I've always loved good intros and good endings. Now those intros and endings that seemed so scary even weeks ago, are fun to learn, and not so scary any more. The best part is that I can now improvise my own intros and endings, and its a lot of fun.
    4. One last point, with learning these different patterns I can play across any genre, blues, rock, jazz, new age all come beating at my door. I'm65, legally blind, and I sitlll look under the bed and in the closet before I go to sleep at night, but now the monsters have been vaporized, and the piano man waits...for me. Thanks Jerald. Peace! Dale

    What's first, second third inversion

    • @JeraldSimon
      @JeraldSimon  2 роки тому

      First, Second, and Third inversion refers to chords that have been inverted. If you have a four note chord like a C6 chord (i.e. C E G A), then you will have four positions - Root Position, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd inversions. The C6 chord in root position is C E G A where C is on the bottom. The C6 chord in first inversion is E G A C where C is on the top. The C6 chord in second inversion is G A C E. The C6 chord in third inversion is A C E G. Sorry if it was confusing.
