It is a electronic controlled shutter which needs a working battery to work.
So that a good way to start.
The B or X setting on the camera might be mechanicel and would in that case work without a working batteri but im not 100% about that.

Just picked up this camera online. Loaded some film in it, but I can't advance it as the film advance lever doesn't seem to be working. It doesn't pull out full way as yours does on the screen. Any thoughts or is it broken? I've inserted new batteries so i dont think its that.

Thats hard to say without looking at it but film in the cameras is not needed to release the shutter.
However step one would be to take a look at the battery compartment if its nice and clean.
I have used a flat screwdriver to scrape of gunk which usually works for worse cases.
You can also test turning on the little screw on the underside of the camera.
A batterygrip use this to advance the camera and you could test turning this with a coin or a screwdriver.
Have a camera where the hand cranked mechanics somethimes malfunktion but can still turn this on the buttom.

Also the shutter can't be reliased if the filmadvance lever is pressed al the way in, that locks the shutter button.

am hoping that anybody who faces this problem find this solution I found in the manual useful. "If the shutter release button is pressed when there are no batteries or they are worn out, the mirror will stay up and the shutter cannot be released. To put the mirror back to its proper position, turn the shutter speed dial to ''X'' or ''B'', and be sure to insert new batteries immediately. If you wish to take pictures without using batteries, use "X'' (1/90 sec.) or ''B''."

once the film is cogged across and you close the back it should auto scroll and load to make ready for your first shot , snap and dont bother with it , the second frame was always the start of the good shots ... ex. a 36 frame roll would give you about 32-33 good shots . Stick with it , it is a brahma of a camera and once sussed you can slip a frame back to do a double exposure which can be great fun if you have fairies or ghosts . Well done for getting one online , I wish i had mine still from 83 .

It would help if you had dialogue. There aren’t really any videos that actually show or explain how to use this and what’s going on.

My Canon Camera is a Ricoh KR 30 -SP how do I use it? Is it worth having?

Old Ricoh cameras are usually quite nice.
Some are quite plastic but still good.
However I don't have anything that goes thrue the basics on how cameras work.
But all old SLRs are pretty much the same.
So search for: use analogue SLR.
Or maybe: how to use analogue SLR.
Im sure you will find something that can help you there.

Can be many reasons why this might happen.
Do you have a working battery in it??
The shutter is electronic controlled and some cameras like this do flip up the mirror and get stuck if you press the shutter button with no working battery.

Either battery has gone. Or in BULB mode for long exposure. See B on dial. Or you order shutter and it’s exposing for a long time. Check X marking also for flash synch.

Nice! I have the KR-10 too, but the SUPER version. It won't release the shutter though, would this mean it's broken? Or would replacing the batteries fix this?

Jeemdee I think it should have two good batteries for shutter release.

    • @Silentaudits7

Yes , put some new batts in to release or allow it to complete the shutter process . It is a wonderful camera if you get it going , well worth fixing .

Doesn't help if you're too shy to speak.
