Great review. I’m now selling my 18-135mm cos the 16-80 gives me the wide end that I need. The bokeh of out of focus background at 80 is far better than 135mm. It’s lighter and zoom is easier to move than 18-135mm. Sharpness doesn’t bother me. Great for reportage weddings.
love your style of video! i love how you get to the point, show information in GRAPHS (my brain works so well with graphs) instead if pixel peeping. i also love the astro imaging display which is unique to your channel in terms of using it at a comparison tool. THANKS will be back for more

Just ordered one to go with my small primes and looking forward to trying it out. I love that you added an astro mention in the video as I do a lot of astro imaging, but with a cooled one shot color astro camera.
Great review with some excellent tips as to how to get the best performance from this lens. “Weather sealed lenses last longer.” I’ve never heard that but it makes sense. I currently have the 16-55, 16-80, and 18-55. To me it seems the 16-80 and 16-55 have that 3D “pop” that you only seem to get from the best lenses. Maybe that’s micro contrast - I’m not sure. The 18-55 is very good, but seems a step below. I’m keeping it for now because someday I hope to have a smaller Fuji body for walk-around. Right now I have the X-T4 and X-H1. Best of luck in becoming a full-time UA-camr. Your level of knowledge and on-camera persona makes me think its going to happen.
The x-e and x-a series make for awesome little travel cameras if you ever need a small option. But also having a lens you "don't care about as much" is great for projects that are a bit riskier as far as camera safety go. Cheers for the comments and support
Lyndon, your statement of ‘a smaller Fuji body for walk-around’ expresses my hesitating of purchasing the XT4. I am coming from a Lumix GM5 (an MFT camera the size is a pocket point-and-shoot with interchangeable lenses). My concern with the XT4 is I will lose the ‘take me with’ feeling I currently have. I know the lens size has a great deal to do with this as my 14-140mm (28-280mm full frame equivalent) is not as inviting. Holding the XT4 with a 35mm seems to provide the take me with feeling ( as opposed to the XT4 with the 16-80). Would you share your experience & explain what cause you to make your statement. I am not a professional, nor do I ever plan to become one. I enjoy taking family pictures (especially of my grand children), some street photography, and when we travel. I do very little video because the quality from the Lumix is not very good, which has deterred me from learning video techniques & gaining post processing skills. I generally like taking my camera with. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Morrie Glick I am very familiar with Panasonic and Olympus MFT bodies and lenses. I used to have a GM1 - couldn’t bear to sell it so I gave it to my daughter! Currently I have the GX85 & G85. I keep them because they have unlimited video recording, and the GX85 is especially a great “walk around” camera. However, nowadays I carry my X-T4 and 16-80 for about 5-10km/day. These are purposeful fitness/photo walks. I find this combo not too heavy, but I certainly wouldn’t want it to be heavier. I love the colours and controls of the Fuji’s. I can get great results with my Pannys too, but I only shoot RAW on them because they all need a bit of post processing. The Fuji files look great right out of the camera, but I usually shoot RAW+JPG in Fuji in case I want to tweak the files later. Why do I shoot the Fuji daily when the GX85 is a better walk around camera? I do some pro gigs and I need the camera to be second nature to me. Since I don’t shoot full time, I dislike having to practice before doing a paying job: if I’m shooting with a camera daily I know all it’s quirks and capabilities. Having said that, no I wouldn’t take the T4 with me everywhere, unless I was travelling. I would like a smaller Fuji for everyday. As Thomas mentioned above the X-E2 looks cool, as does theXA series. Perhaps someday I’ll get an X100 or X70. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more about Panasonic vs. Fuji cameras. I’ve shot Panasonic since 2013 and Fuji since 2016. The T4 is a natural for you if you are used to the excellent Panasonic IBIS. But you probably won’t want to take it out to the pub with your friends, or out for a coffee. It’s an SUV of a camera, you might want a sports car too! 😀 p.s. most Panasonic cameras shoot excellent video! But I always go for my Fuji’s for video first: I love Eterna and some of the other profiles for video! But if I need clips over 30 minutes, my 2 Pannys get the job done very well.
Morrie Glick yes that stands for Direct Message. I forgot I was commenting on UA-cam and this platform doesn’t really have a message application. So I’ll end with this: if you can afford both cameras keep the GM5. That’s a future piece of photographic history: the smallest interchangeable lens camera with a decent sensor size that has an EVF. It’s already a collector’s item. Chris Niccolls is probably the most famous photographer that still regularly shoots on a GM5 for his personal work. But the X-T4 with the 16-80 (or 35 f2 as you suggested - I have both) is at a whole new level of image quality for both stills and video, especially regarding skin tones. If you like to do post-production on your computer you can get some great portraits with Panasonic. But there is a reason that only a handful of world-class portrait photographers use Panasonic: skin colours are not their strong point. This has improved a bit in cameras since your GM5, but if you want timeless portraits of your family straight out of the camera or with very little post production, go for the X-T4. Keep the GM5 as your go everywhere camera, and use the T4 when you want some serious images and memories that will stand the test of time. All the best!
I already have XF 16-80. I am looking to buy XF 23 et/ou XF 27 et/or XF 35 ... not anymore. The 23-35mm range of the 16-80 is more than enough for me. Thank you!
Thank you for following up. It is very much appreciated. Looking forward to seeing your video. Just to complete my information, most of the photos are viewed electronically. The superior ones are printed at 5x7 or 8x10. My reason for being so persist in comparing the 2 lenses is the fear of being disappointed in the sharpness, colour rendition, & over all image quality once I purchase the 16-80 (I.e. buyer regret). Keep up your good work & stay healthy.
Think of them more as a 16-50(for the 16-80) And a 16-35 (for the 16-55) IS vs f/2.8 has its pros and cons for low light, but for smaller prints I would be VERY happy with the 16-80. And for scenes where you want MAX quality use the 16-80 as a 23mm (with a panoramic if required) For me a big part of travel Photography is to have gear that doesn't effect the travel/experience at the costs of photos. If you felt regret after buying either of these lens I think it would be more of a G.A.S (gear acquisition syndrome) issue or that fact that travel is very tricky at the moment causing G.A.S

I haven't dived into all the back catalog of your videos yet, but possibly an idea for you sometime in the future is maybe looking into/reviewing non-Fuji lenses ie Rokinon, Mitakon, or Zeiss are a few that spring to mind. Obviously they have their own pros/cons, but if you ever need any extra ideas, well there's one for ya no charge! I ended up settling for the 16-55mm lens for my first lens with Fuji, but the 16-80mm was very much close to my second choice and it's still something to consider if I ever see a good used one around. Cheers for the comments as always man, I have the samyang 12mm f/2 coming up in about two weeks time, but as I'm not a ambassador for those brands it's not as easy for me to get hold of the gear to review, but if anyone knows anyone from any of those copies and would like to lend me some gear, I would love to review it. The samyang 12mm f/2 was kindly leant to me by a fan, but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it and would much rather deal with the suppliers directly for the sake of gear safety.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Yeah the Samyang 12mm looks pretty good for astrophotography and it's pretty affordable, personally I'll probably be buying some 12mm lens later this year. Definitely looking forward to your upcoming reviews man. Even if you don't have like a million followers, you're content is still golden for those of us that share in your passion. I'm actually off in a bit to go shoot some abandoned farms and near abandoned buildings while it's not too super hot today, so cheers for now man, keep up the great work!
As I understand it from several sources, the OIS of this lens automatically senses that it is on a tripod and turns itself off, hence there is much less need to an IS on/off, and not having that enhances the environmental sealing
Great review! The 16-80mm is my first fuji lens that I bought with my X-T3 and I've got some amazing shots as well. I was really impressed with my first Milky Way shot given that this lens is not the best lens for astrophotography.

I have the XC15-45mm but I dislike the build quality and lack of WR. But based on the IQ I'm getting out of it alone, its hard to justify the XF16-80mmF4 in my kit. My use case is just for family photos for travelling. Though I do have the XF35mmF2 which I use from time to time.
At some point in the future I will do a "best lens for wildlife" series but it is a while away yet sorry and unfortunately the 55-200mm doesn't fall into my wide-angle bracket. BUT I will test it eventually, and I do really appreciate the sub, cheers
I have used both the 50-140mm and the 90mm a lot. And there is no clear winner sorry it really depends on what you want from a lens. The 90mm is smaller, lighter and sharper BUT the 50-140 is my main lens for all things commercial and wedding. Even more and more for landscape I use the 50-140mm. And if I had to choose again I'd still pick the 50-140mm. hope this helps. And cheers for the comment.
I would also agree with you on the 50-140... I would also say the 16mm f1.4 for lowlight but versatile also if you wanted to take macro style shots with its up close focusing
This is such a detailed and well explained review :) now I’m considering this lens as well. But I am currently in a state of dilemma. Well, I recently switched systems from Canon to Fuji and I have a hard time deciding which lens should I get. I’m currently using an X-T4 and loving it so far. I am a photographer (just a hobbyist) and I have an XF 10-24 f4 because I need the wide angle shot to take photos of cityscape/landscapes and also did a bit of vlogging with it as well. I would be doing mainly photograph still, but would like to do some videography in the future. What lens should I go with next? I’m torn between the XF 16-55mm f2.8 or a bunch of primes of 23mm f2 + 35mm f2 + 50mm f2. I’m not considering the fast primes of f1.4 because I heard the autofocus is not great as it’s an old lens with old focusing motors. The f1.4 primes are great lenses which produce amazing pictures (don’t get me wrong), but I wouldn’t mind the f2 as they have better motors and faster autofocus which will help my videography in the future. I am aware that the XF 16-55 f2.8 is great for video as well because of its linear motor (LM) with silent yet fast autofocus. So knowing that I’m just a hobbyist photographer who would like to try to produce cinematic videos in the future, which lens do you recommend? XF 16-55mm f2.8 or the f2 primes? Cost will not be an issue for me as they add up to roughly the same price. Thanks! Your opinion on this will be greatly appreciated.
I think that is easy as to answer. The primes. All this video is shot in the 23mm f/2 and all your thoughts about video AF are spot on, but as I should in the video section of this review the 16-55mm does a slight little shimmer just as it locks on while doing big AF changes in video. Where those new f/2 lens are really nice and smooth. The 16-55mm IS a amazing wide angle lens but from what you've just described to me, and as you have the 10-24mm already, I'd heavily suggest getting the primes. Thanks for the good detailed review - I'm actually on the verge of selling my Fuji 16-80mm - I just don't find it sharp enough at any focal length - I'm sorry I sold my 16-55mm for this. I also don't get how you rate the 16-80mm above the 10-24mm for sharpness - to me my 10-24mm blows the 16-80mm away for sharpness. I used my 16-80mm for my son's graduation photo's and I couldn't be more disappointed with the overall sharpness. Right now I'm looking to pick up the Sigma 18-50mm and hopefully I can get close to an even trade with my 16-80mm.
I do wonder about production consistency and firmware / processing. I’ve had a few of the same lenses with noticeable different results and other lenses get much worse after a firmware update.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I made sure to do firmware upgrades every time I buy a new lens - no exception to that here. To me this lens lacked the personality or gestalt that you find in other lenses, especially from Fuji, that's one reason why I love the X series so much. At the end of the day this lens just didn't do it for me. Not that others wont love this lens - I just don't, and I'm more than happy to see it go.
Sorry I think you miss read my comment, I’ve had lenses get much worse AFTER firmware updating them. enough for me to easily notice when doing before and after MTF testing.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I read what you wrote - not discounting it. Before I bought the lens I read reviews saying the lens had issues that were fixed with upgrades. It's OK - Fuji cant hit it out of the park every time. I just bought the Sigma 18-50mm, and my Fuji 16-80mm will be heading to MPB in the morning along with my heavily used Nikon 14-24mm to help offset the cost of the Sigma.

I think the main area the 18-55mm is better than the 16-80mm is for astro. Which is where the samyang 12mm is fantastic. I'd choose the 16-80mm even for the price difference.

Just watched your video.I'm buying the XS10 with the 16-80mm F4 . I'm a beginner photographer and would use it mainly for landscape and some wildlife. I debated (and still not quite sure) between the 18-55mm or the 16-80mm. My thought process is that with the 16-80 I could capture some possible wildlife shots without having to switch to the 70-300mm whcih I plan on buying when it comes out in the first quarter of 2021. And easier to carry in the backpack, all the while still being able to use it for landscape. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you for your honest detailed review!
For me I would easily pick the 16-80 over the 18-55 for landscape work. The 18-55 isn't weather seal and is no where near as sharp at the wider end which is where I do a lot of my landscape work. UNLESS you want to do some astrophotography as well, then the 18-55 wins out.
I thought the reason this lens doesn’t have an on/off switch for the OIS is that it has an automatic switch that turns the OIS off when it’s placed on a tripod.
The Sigma 17-70 Contemporary is currently the only major reason that keeps me at Nikon (the others being the optical viewfinder and the Nikon lightning system). But this would be a nice lens for my purposes (travel) with the Fuji X-T4 or X-S10. But I do not want to degrade my images, not even in the corners. So how do those two lenses compare?
Unfortunately I haven't had a test of the sigma 17-70 to compare sorry. And as I consider sigma the only other lens company (aside from Fuji) to make consistently sharp/above par lenses I wouldn't even want to take a guess sorry. I love sigma lens and I love Fuji lenses. And I really enjoyed using the 16-80. If you mostly shoot wider I'd be confident in you loving the 16-80. But if you shoot more at the 80mm mark then I'd want to do more research comparing those two before making a choice. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Sorry my initial reply was for the wrong subject. This lens does suffer from some lens breathing, the sides of the shot move as it focuses making focusing more obvious.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I don't know in detail but there have been some people syaing it's resolved after the update. Some people said otherwise. Don't know if it's resolved or less obvious now or not resolved at all.

As in which is the better overall zoom lens or which lens resolved the most detail including with cropping to zoom etc? Sorry just want to double check your question so I can answer it correctly.
tb- photography thanks for asking. The latter, since greater detail then cropping should compensate for some of the reduced reach on the 16-55. Thus this lens should be a better travel lens as well as a better overall zoom. I know the 16-55 is about 150 grams heavier (would the extra weight be an issue for most people?)
The 16-55 is next week's video, it is a better lens but yes for me personally as someone who owned it the weight was a issue, though I feel how much weight is too much weight is a personal opinion. As for zoom vs zoom. The 16-80mm wins that, both get a little softer at max zoom but as far as detail goes there is so little difference in sharpness between the two. So as a travel lens the 16-80mm is the better choice in my opinion. But was a landscape Photography lens the 16-55mm is a better option. Hope this helps.
Just finishing up this week's video of the 16-55mm and realised I haven't included a answer to your question in it so thought I would let you know here. No, cropping in on the 16-55mm @55mm isn't as good as a straight 80mm shot on the 16-80mm in my opinion. Though It very much depends on what you plan do with your final photos (prints or just online etc) But in the end being able to also crop the 16-80mm @ 80mm to get extra range again also gives more credit to the 16-80mm as far as a travel lens goes.
I have cancelled my preorder for this lens as soon as the first reviews were released indicating that this was just another good but overpriced kit lens. The price has dropped more than 20% since its release and has become far more acceptable. Personnally I would have traded less zoom range for more image quality. Furthermore, the extended barrel makes the lens vulnerable.
I agree about the zoom range for photography, though I guess ya don't have to go past 50mm and it's IQ is great up until then. but as a video lens I think it's pretty amazing. A fully covered barrel would have been nice but maybe bigger so hard to comment on that one.

Nope I wouldn’t get it, I think the 3 lenses you have are perfect for weddings, new camera would make a small improvement in auto focus but I wouldn’t get that lens. Maybe the new 18mm WR for bigger group photos though.
Hi Thomas! I have been watching a lot of your videos and I love your reviews :) But there is a question I have not been able to answer with them, so I will ask you directly in case you can give me some advice. I come from a Canon EOS 500D (12 years old) and want to go mirrorless. After a lot of research and doubts I have finally found the Fuji X-S10 that I think fits most of my needs. The lens I used more with my Canon was a 18-200 but I think I will get the Fuji kit with 16-80 because what I'm mostly looking for is a versatile travel lens and for your reviews I think this could be the one. However, I'm afraid it will still be too heavy for me sometimes and I have seen I can have the 15-45 kit lens for only 120€ more (it usually costs 280). My question for you is, do you think I could take any advantage from it? I mean, sometimes going out with just this one? Or would it be better to save that money for a 35mm F2 I'm planning to eventually buy? (I like taking occassional portraits and low ligh pictures, e.g. concerts) Thank you very much!!
The 16-80 will be fanatic, it’s about 20% litre than the canon 18-200 plus from my personal use of that lens more so recently I think the size and weight of the lens is spot on, I think a lens can be too small and lite and that the 16-80 is in that sweet spot

Great review but a tad disappointed with the drop off. I was looking for something to take on holidays (if we ever get out of this pandemic) but the drop off after 50 is rather steep. Also do you know if the new firmware update has fixed the autofocus issue on video? Thanks again
Unfortunately I don't own all of these lenses so I am unable to check them as they get updates. So I am unsure sorry. But as far as travel goes I'm not sure if there is a better lens without it getting far bigger and heavier. Yes it drops off after 50 but I would still be very happy with it. I'd suggest popping into a store with your camera (if that's possible for you *covid) taking a few shots at 80mm and having a look at them on a computer at home afterwards. It might surprise you. But if you like to print BIG photos then unfortunately yes a bigger lens is going to be required. Cheers for the comments ☝️👍

Between the 16-55 f2.8 and the 15-80 f4 using a xt4, witch option you recommend for a hybrid shooter (Photo and video)? Without considering the price.
Have you had any issues with image stabilization using this 16-80 with the X-T4? I have had a few situations where I get motion blur caused by either the IBIS or optical len stabilization. This issue has really bothered me. Now I am always sure to turn off the stabilization (mapped to a function button) if I have a sufficiently high shutter speed.

Hello, which lens is better for close object photography with T-X3, this or 18-55? Also intrested to make video in future, but I heard what focus is not very good for video. All in all I am looking fo something multipurpose. As I can see 18-55 is sharper, but 16-80 is better for more situation. Really need your advice. Thanks. P.S: I am the beginner.
I'd find out which lens without your budget has the best minimum focus distance. I would guess the 18-55mm I also film most of my studio videos with the 18-55mm and I've been very happy with it, though I do not own in personally
Ps... 30 seconds is too long for astro, regardless of focal length... you will always get noticeable motion blur. Even at 12 mm, 27 seconds is the minimum shutter speed...

I guess you are experiencing the constant fan/motor noise due the OIS as well? But do you have any issues with high pitch sounds while recording? I do have that problem and found another youtuber with that issue too. Those sounds are even noticeable in the video on pc as well.
I don't recall any OIS fan/motor noise, the only "noise" I can hear on this video is my lack of knowledge in EQ at the time of recording and the sound of my video light fan. Otherwise I thought the lens was very silent.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Oh alright. I checked a few forums, and apparently it's quite normal that the OIS makes some constant noise while operating the camera.. Now i am worried since you report no such noises lol. With the video i mean, the one I recorded with my 16-80 without an external mic. When I listen to that on my PC, those high pitch sounds are definitely noticeable. There's no issue with your videos, they're great, and thanks for the quick response.
Oh I didn't do any testing with the internal mic, and didn't hold my ear right up against the lens, but I'm very confident the lens shouldn't make any sound to effect video when using a microphone. And no worries at all happy to try and help.
For example the 16-80mm can be used anywhere from 16mm up to 80mm. But the scores / rankings I have shown and tested at, are just showing the results from in this case at 16mm (@16mm) as the series is focus wide angle lenses, and not at say 50mm or 80mm etc
Would you say this lens is better then the 18-55 kit lens ? As I wanna shoot mainly street photography, people are saying the 16-80 is not ideal for street photography

I found the 16-80 very sharp from 16-45ish And the 18-55 sharp from 23-35 Both are great lenses though, don't get crazy picky on the sharpness just assume both are sharp enough to get what you want done, done. And by the lenses that suits and excites you the most.
For me, this lens is a disappointment, maybe I had too high expectations, For portraits and handheld it gives me a lot of blurry images. For video it's good. Comparing to a sharpness of 16mm f1,4 it is a disappointing product. I am thinking about selling it and getting some other sharper zoom for hybrid shooting, what would you recommend?

I don't have a video for it yet, but it's a bit big a heavy for a one lens option, could you not have two primes? I currently walk around with the 16 1.4 and the 56mm (which feels a little old but is sharp) and I LOVE the two of them

I wouldn't recommend owning both. And I don't think I'd personally make the change unless I could break even in the exchange. And if I could, yes I would switch to the 16-80

tb- photography well I mainly shoot nature and landscapes occasionally portraits . I’m gonna hop over to Fuji from my m50. I’m wondering the the 16-80 is worth the jump in price for WR. Either I start with one of those 2 zooms or a single prime.
Between those two both of the subjects you mentioned the 16-80 is better. Both are a little soft at max zoom though. But the 16-80 is great around the 50mm mark and fantastically sharp as a wide-angle. What prime would you be considering? And do you plan/want to buy more lenses soon? But really it all comes down to versatility vs quality. A few primes will be much higher quality but will cost you more and require to changes lens etc between shots. Or you could have the 16-80 which isn't as good but is all in one lens. If you haven't had range of lenses before I personally would suggest getting the 16-80mm to start with. and then buy the right prime for the content you love to shoot. (E.g. wide or zoomed etc)
Corner sharpness is awful on 16mm and 80mm, on shutterstock they don't even accept the photos, i get the focus reject :) only the center is well focused, the rest looks like shit.
Great review. I’m now selling my 18-135mm cos the 16-80 gives me the wide end that I need. The bokeh of out of focus background at 80 is far better than 135mm. It’s lighter and zoom is easier to move than 18-135mm. Sharpness doesn’t bother me. Great for reportage weddings.

Just ordered one to go with my small primes and looking forward to trying it out. I love that you added an astro mention in the video as I do a lot of astro imaging, but with a cooled one shot color astro camera.
Great review with some excellent tips as to how to get the best performance from this lens. “Weather sealed lenses last longer.” I’ve never heard that but it makes sense. I currently have the 16-55, 16-80, and 18-55. To me it seems the 16-80 and 16-55 have that 3D “pop” that you only seem to get from the best lenses. Maybe that’s micro contrast - I’m not sure. The 18-55 is very good, but seems a step below. I’m keeping it for now because someday I hope to have a smaller Fuji body for walk-around. Right now I have the X-T4 and X-H1.
Best of luck in becoming a full-time UA-camr. Your level of knowledge and on-camera persona makes me think its going to happen.
The x-e and x-a series make for awesome little travel cameras if you ever need a small option.
But also having a lens you "don't care about as much" is great for projects that are a bit riskier as far as camera safety go.

Lyndon, your statement of ‘a smaller Fuji body for walk-around’ expresses my hesitating of purchasing the XT4. I am coming from a Lumix GM5 (an MFT camera the size is a pocket point-and-shoot with interchangeable lenses). My concern with the XT4 is I will lose the ‘take me with’ feeling I currently have. I know the lens size has a great deal to do with this as my 14-140mm (28-280mm full frame equivalent) is not as inviting. Holding the XT4 with a 35mm seems to provide the take me with feeling ( as opposed to the XT4 with the 16-80). Would you share your experience & explain what cause you to make your statement.
I am not a professional, nor do I ever plan to become one. I enjoy taking family pictures (especially of my grand children), some street photography, and when we travel. I do very little video because the quality from the Lumix is not very good, which has deterred me from learning video techniques & gaining post processing skills. Morrie Glick I am very familiar with Panasonic and Olympus MFT bodies and lenses. I used to have a GM1 - couldn’t bear to sell it so I gave it to my daughter! Currently I have the GX85 & G85. I keep them because they have unlimited video recording, and the GX85 is especially a great “walk around” camera. However, nowadays I carry my X-T4 and 16-80 for about 5-10km/day. These are purposeful fitness/photo walks. I find this combo not too heavy, but I certainly wouldn’t want it to be heavier.
I love the colours and controls of the Fuji’s. I can get great results with my Pannys too, but I only shoot RAW on them because they all need a bit of post processing. The Fuji files look great right out of the camera, but I usually shoot RAW+JPG in Fuji in case I want to tweak the files later.
Why do I shoot the Fuji daily when the GX85 is a better walk around camera? I do some pro gigs and I need the camera to be second nature to me. Since I don’t shoot full time, I dislike having to practice before doing a paying job: if I’m shooting with a camera daily I know all it’s quirks and capabilities.
Having said that, no I wouldn’t take the T4 with me everywhere, unless I was travelling. I would like a smaller Fuji for everyday. As Thomas mentioned above the X-E2 looks cool, as does theXA series. Perhaps someday I’ll get an X100 or X70.
Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more about Panasonic vs. Fuji cameras. I’ve shot Panasonic since 2013 and Fuji since 2016. The T4 is a natural for you if you are used to the excellent Panasonic IBIS. But you probably won’t want to take it out to the pub with your friends, or out for a coffee. It’s an SUV of a camera, you might want a sports car too! 😀 p.s. most Panasonic cameras shoot excellent video! But I always go for my Fuji’s for video first: I love Eterna and some of the other profiles for video! But if I need clips over 30 minutes, my 2 Pannys get the job done very well.

Morrie Glick yes that stands for Direct Message. I forgot I was commenting on UA-cam and this platform doesn’t really have a message application. So I’ll end with this: if you can afford both cameras keep the GM5. That’s a future piece of photographic history: the smallest interchangeable lens camera with a decent sensor size that has an EVF. It’s already a collector’s item. Chris Niccolls is probably the most famous photographer that still regularly shoots on a GM5 for his personal work. But the X-T4 with the 16-80 (or 35 f2 as you suggested - I have both) is at a whole new level of image quality for both stills and video, especially regarding skin tones. If you like to do post-production on your computer you can get some great portraits with Panasonic. But there is a reason that only a handful of world-class portrait photographers use Panasonic: skin colours are not their strong point. This has improved a bit in cameras since your GM5, but if you want timeless portraits of your family straight out of the camera or with very little post production, go for the X-T4. Keep the GM5 as your go everywhere camera, and use the T4 when you want some serious images and memories that will stand the test of time. All the best!
I already have XF 16-80. I am looking to buy XF 23 et/ou XF 27 et/or XF 35 ... not anymore. The 23-35mm range of the 16-80 is more than enough for me. Thank you!

The superior ones are printed at 5x7 or 8x10. My reason for being so persist in comparing the 2 lenses is the fear of being disappointed in the sharpness, colour rendition, & over all image quality once I purchase the 16-80 (I.e. buyer regret).
Keep up your good work & stay healthy.
Think of them more as a 16-50(for the 16-80)
And a 16-35 (for the 16-55)
IS vs f/2.8 has its pros and cons for low light, but for smaller prints I would be VERY happy with the 16-80.
And for scenes where you want MAX quality use the 16-80 as a 23mm (with a panoramic if required)
For me a big part of travel Photography is to have gear that doesn't effect the travel/experience at the costs of photos.
If you felt regret after buying either of these lens I think it would be more of a G.A.S (gear acquisition syndrome) issue or that fact that travel is very tricky at the moment causing G.A.S

I haven't dived into all the back catalog of your videos yet, but possibly an idea for you sometime in the future is maybe looking into/reviewing non-Fuji lenses ie Rokinon, Mitakon, or Zeiss are a few that spring to mind. Obviously they have their own pros/cons, but if you ever need any extra ideas, well there's one for ya no charge! I ended up settling for the 16-55mm lens for my first lens with Fuji, but the 16-80mm was very much close to my second choice and it's still something to consider if I ever see a good used one around. Thanks again mate for taking the time to make, shoot, edit, and post these great little videos and thanks even more for taking the time to read this comment! The samyang 12mm f/2 was kindly leant to me by a fan, but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it and would much rather deal with the suppliers directly for the sake of gear safety.

As I understand it from several sources, the OIS of this lens automatically senses that it is on a tripod and turns itself off, hence there is much less need to an IS on/off, and not having that enhances the environmental sealing

Great review! The 16-80mm is my first fuji lens that I bought with my X-T3 and I've got some amazing shots as well. I was really impressed with my first Milky Way shot given that this lens is not the best lens for astrophotography.
Just because it's not the best lens for Astro doesn't mean you can't get great results still.

I still prefer my 18-55 for video. No additionall weight on gimbal, no whining of the stabi motor. AF +stabi as good or good enough.
I've actually changed to the 18-55 for my studio video work on my lastest videos after using it.

I have the XC15-45mm but I dislike the build quality and lack of WR. But based on the IQ I'm getting out of it alone, its hard to justify the XF16-80mmF4 in my kit. My use case is just for family photos for travelling. Though I do have the XF35mmF2 which I use from time to time.

Great review. I have this lens and it is amazing. So, best thing to complement this lens is to purchase 50-140f2.8 or 90f2?
I have used both the 50-140mm and the 90mm a lot.
And there is no clear winner sorry it really depends on what you want from a lens.
The 90mm is smaller, lighter and sharper BUT the 50-140 is my main lens for all things commercial and wedding.
Even more and more for landscape I use the 50-140mm.
And if I had to choose again I'd still pick the 50-140mm. hope this helps.

I would also agree with you on the 50-140... I would also say the 16mm f1.4 for lowlight but versatile also if you wanted to take macro style shots with its up close focusing

This is such a detailed and well explained review :) now I’m considering this lens as well. But I am currently in a state of dilemma.
Well, I recently switched systems from Canon to Fuji and I have a hard time deciding which lens should I get. I’m currently using an X-T4 and loving it so far. I am a photographer (just a hobbyist) and I have an XF 10-24 f4 because I need the wide angle shot to take photos of cityscape/landscapes and also did a bit of vlogging with it as well. I would be doing mainly photograph still, but would like to do some videography in the future. What lens should I go with next? I’m torn between the XF 16-55mm f2.8 or a bunch of primes of 23mm f2 + 35mm f2 + 50mm f2. I’m not considering the fast primes of f1.4 because I heard the autofocus is not great as it’s an old lens with old focusing motors. The f1.4 primes are great lenses which produce amazing pictures (don’t get me wrong), but I wouldn’t mind the f2 as they have better motors and faster autofocus which will help my videography in the future. I am aware that the XF 16-55 f2.8 is great for video as well because of its linear motor (LM) with silent yet fast autofocus.
So knowing that I’m just a hobbyist photographer who would like to try to produce cinematic videos in the future, which lens do you recommend? XF 16-55mm f2.8 or the f2 primes? Cost will not be an issue for me as they add up to roughly the same price.

I think that is easy as to answer.
The primes.
All this video is shot in the 23mm f/2 and all your thoughts about video AF are spot on, but as I should in the video section of this review the 16-55mm does a slight little shimmer just as it locks on while doing big AF changes in video.
Where those new f/2 lens are really nice and smooth.
The 16-55mm IS a amazing wide angle lens but from what you've just described to me, and as you have the 10-24mm already, I'd heavily suggest getting the primes.

Thanks for the good detailed review - I'm actually on the verge of selling my Fuji 16-80mm - I just don't find it sharp enough at any focal length - I'm sorry I sold my 16-55mm for this. I also don't get how you rate the 16-80mm above the 10-24mm for sharpness - to me my 10-24mm blows the 16-80mm away for sharpness. I used my 16-80mm for my son's graduation photo's and I couldn't be more disappointed with the overall sharpness. Right now I'm looking to pick up the Sigma 18-50mm and hopefully I can get close to an even trade with my 16-80mm.
I do wonder about production consistency and firmware / processing.
I’ve had a few of the same lenses with noticeable different results and other lenses get much worse after a firmware update.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I made sure to do firmware upgrades every time I buy a new lens - no exception to that here. To me this lens lacked the personality or gestalt that you find in other lenses, especially from Fuji, that's one reason why I love the X series so much. At the end of the day this lens just didn't do it for me. Not that others wont love this lens - I just don't, and I'm more than happy to see it go.
Sorry I think you miss read my comment, I’ve had lenses get much worse AFTER firmware updating them.

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I read what you wrote - not discounting it. Before I bought the lens I read reviews saying the lens had issues that were fixed with upgrades. It's OK - Fuji cant hit it out of the park every time. I just bought the Sigma 18-50mm, and my Fuji 16-80mm will be heading to MPB in the morning along with my heavily used Nikon 14-24mm to help offset the cost of the Sigma.

I think the main area the 18-55mm is better than the 16-80mm is for astro.

Just watched your video.I'm buying the XS10 with the 16-80mm F4 . I'm a beginner photographer and would use it mainly for landscape and some wildlife. I debated (and still not quite sure) between the 18-55mm or the 16-80mm. My thought process is that with the 16-80 I could capture some possible wildlife shots without having to switch to the 70-300mm whcih I plan on buying when it comes out in the first quarter of 2021. And easier to carry in the backpack, all the while still being able to use it for landscape. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you for your honest detailed review!
For me I would easily pick the 16-80 over the 18-55 for landscape work.
The 18-55 isn't weather seal and is no where near as sharp at the wider end which is where I do a lot of my landscape work.
UNLESS you want to do some astrophotography as well, then the 18-55 wins out.

I thought the reason this lens doesn’t have an on/off switch for the OIS is that it has an automatic switch that turns the OIS off when it’s placed on a tripod.
It does automatic turn the OIS on and off, though it's when it thinks it's needed or not, not necessarily when it's on a tripod
The Sigma 17-70 Contemporary is currently the only major reason that keeps me at Nikon (the others being the optical viewfinder and the Nikon lightning system). But this would be a nice lens for my purposes (travel) with the Fuji X-T4 or X-S10. But I do not want to degrade my images, not even in the corners. So how do those two lenses compare?
Unfortunately I haven't had a test of the sigma 17-70 to compare sorry.
And as I consider sigma the only other lens company (aside from Fuji) to make consistently sharp/above par lenses I wouldn't even want to take a guess sorry.
I love sigma lens and I love Fuji lenses. And I really enjoyed using the 16-80.
If you mostly shoot wider I'd be confident in you loving the 16-80.
But if you shoot more at the 80mm mark then I'd want to do more research comparing those two before making a choice.

This lens does suffer from some lens breathing, the sides of the shot move as it focuses making focusing more obvious.

tb- photography thanks for asking. The latter, since greater detail then cropping should compensate for some of the reduced reach on the 16-55. Thus this lens should be a better travel lens as well as a better overall zoom. I know the 16-55 is about 150 grams heavier (would the extra weight be an issue for most people?)
The 16-55 is next week's video, it is a better lens but yes for me personally as someone who owned it the weight was a issue, though I feel how much weight is too much weight is a personal opinion.
As for zoom vs zoom.
The 16-80mm wins that, both get a little softer at max zoom but as far as detail goes there is so little difference in sharpness between the two.
So as a travel lens the 16-80mm is the better choice in my opinion.
But was a landscape Photography lens the 16-55mm is a better option.

Just finishing up this week's video of the 16-55mm and realised I haven't included a answer to your question in it so thought I would let you know here.
No, cropping in on the 16-55mm @55mm isn't as good as a straight 80mm shot on the 16-80mm in my opinion.
Though It very much depends on what you plan do with your final photos (prints or just online etc)
But in the end being able to also crop the 16-80mm @ 80mm to get extra range again also gives more credit to the 16-80mm as far as a travel lens goes.
I have cancelled my preorder for this lens as soon as the first reviews were released indicating that this was just another good but overpriced kit lens. The price has dropped more than 20% since its release and has become far more acceptable. Personnally I would have traded less zoom range for more image quality. Furthermore, the extended barrel makes the lens vulnerable.
I agree about the zoom range for photography, though I guess ya don't have to go past 50mm and it's IQ is great up until then. but as a video lens I think it's pretty amazing.
A fully covered barrel would have been nice but maybe bigger so hard to comment on that one.

Nope I wouldn’t get it, I think the 3 lenses you have are perfect for weddings, new camera would make a small improvement in auto focus but I wouldn’t get that lens.

I have been watching a lot of your videos and I love your reviews :) But there is a question I have not been able to answer with them, so I will ask you directly in case you can give me some advice. I come from a Canon EOS 500D (12 years old) and want to go mirrorless. After a lot of research and doubts I have finally found the Fuji X-S10 that I think fits most of my needs. The lens I used more with my Canon was a 18-200 but I think I will get the Fuji kit with 16-80 because what I'm mostly looking for is a versatile travel lens and for your reviews I think this could be the one. However, I'm afraid it will still be too heavy for me sometimes and I have seen I can have the 15-45 kit lens for only 120€ more (it usually costs 280).
My question for you is, do you think I could take any advantage from it? I mean, sometimes going out with just this one? Or would it be better to save that money for a 35mm F2 I'm planning to eventually buy? (I like taking occassional portraits and low ligh pictures, e.g. concerts) Thank you very much!!
The 16-80 will be fanatic, it’s about 20% litre than the canon 18-200 plus from my personal use of that lens more so recently I think the size and weight of the lens is spot on, I think a lens can be too small and lite and that the 16-80 is in that sweet spot

Great review but a tad disappointed with the drop off. I was looking for something to take on holidays (if we ever get out of this pandemic) but the drop off after 50 is rather steep. Also do you know if the new firmware update has fixed the autofocus issue on video? Thanks again
Unfortunately I don't own all of these lenses so I am unable to check them as they get updates. So I am unsure sorry.
But as far as travel goes I'm not sure if there is a better lens without it getting far bigger and heavier.
Yes it drops off after 50 but I would still be very happy with it.
I'd suggest popping into a store with your camera (if that's possible for you *covid) taking a few shots at 80mm and having a look at them on a computer at home afterwards. It might surprise you.
But if you like to print BIG photos then unfortunately yes a bigger lens is going to be required.

Between the 16-55 f2.8 and the 15-80 f4 using a xt4, witch option you recommend for a hybrid shooter (Photo and video)? Without considering the price.
Without considering the price is go with the 16-55 f2.8 personally
Have you had any issues with image stabilization using this 16-80 with the X-T4? I have had a few situations where I get motion blur caused by either the IBIS or optical len stabilization. This issue has really bothered me. Now I am always sure to turn off the stabilization (mapped to a function button) if I have a sufficiently high shutter speed.
I’ve been using the 16-80 more so lately for time lapse and video work and haven’t had any issues so far

I didn't have any issues with that BUT I also pretty much never zoom while recording and you're not the first to ask that so it must be a thing

I haven't done heavy testing on either BUT I have used the 50-140 for wedding videos and found it fantastic

Hello, which lens is better for close object photography with T-X3, this or 18-55? Also intrested to make video in future, but I heard what focus is not very good for video. All in all I am looking fo something multipurpose. As I can see 18-55 is sharper, but 16-80 is better for more situation. Really need your advice. Thanks.

What kind of objects are you wanting to photograph?
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography mostly it will be leather accessories (watch straps, wallets, cardholders) on the wood/leather background.
I'd find out which lens without your budget has the best minimum focus distance.
I would guess the 18-55mm I also film most of my studio videos with the 18-55mm and I've been very happy with it, though I do not own in personally
Ps... 30 seconds is too long for astro, regardless of focal length... you will always get noticeable motion blur. Even at 12 mm, 27 seconds is the minimum shutter speed...
All over that, the settings mention in this is more of a starting point.

I guess you are experiencing the constant fan/motor noise due the OIS as well? But do you have any issues with high pitch sounds while recording? I do have that problem and found another youtuber with that issue too. Those sounds are even noticeable in the video on pc as well.
I don't recall any OIS fan/motor noise, the only "noise" I can hear on this video is my lack of knowledge in EQ at the time of recording and the sound of my video light fan. Otherwise I thought the lens was very silent.
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Oh alright. I checked a few forums, and apparently it's quite normal that the OIS makes some constant noise while operating the camera.. Now i am worried since you report no such noises lol.
With the video i mean, the one I recorded with my 16-80 without an external mic. When I listen to that on my PC, those high pitch sounds are definitely noticeable. There's no issue with your videos, they're great, and thanks for the quick response.
Oh I didn't do any testing with the internal mic, and didn't hold my ear right up against the lens, but I'm very confident the lens shouldn't make any sound to effect video when using a microphone.

The lense automatically shuts down stabilization when mounted on a tripod.
*when it feels it's necessary/things are steady enough without it.

For example the 16-80mm can be used anywhere from 16mm up to 80mm.
But the scores / rankings I have shown and tested at, are just showing the results from in this case at 16mm (@16mm) as the series is focus wide angle lenses, and not at say 50mm or 80mm etc

Would you say this lens is better then the 18-55 kit lens ? As I wanna shoot mainly street photography, people are saying the 16-80 is not ideal for street photography

I found the 16-80 very sharp from 16-45ish
And the 18-55 sharp from 23-35
Both are great lenses though, don't get crazy picky on the sharpness just assume both are sharp enough to get what you want done, done.
And by the lenses that suits and excites you the most.

For me, this lens is a disappointment, maybe I had too high expectations, For portraits and handheld it gives me a lot of blurry images. For video it's good. Comparing to a sharpness of 16mm f1,4 it is a disappointing product. I am thinking about selling it and getting some other sharper zoom for hybrid shooting, what would you recommend?
The 50-140 is outstanding, not much competes with the 16 1.4 though, specially when looking at zooms, but I do love the 50-140
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography I need one lens for trips video + photo. This lens just does not do great handheld and portraits for me. Need something which snaps sharp images, but I think 50 is too tight and I dont need zoom over 80. Do you have comparison video to 50-140?
I don't have a video for it yet, but it's a bit big a heavy for a one lens option, could you not have two primes?
I currently walk around with the 16 1.4 and the 56mm (which feels a little old but is sharp) and I LOVE the two of them

Not enough of a difference to be worth the swap if you already have one.
Unless you need weather sealing or the extra range etc
So do you keep on IS on tripod or no with this lens? i saw some tests it's kinda tricky

Do note it turns off when it doesn't think it's needed.
So even if on a tripod and moving around the IS will kick back in during the movement.

I wouldn't recommend owning both.
And I don't think I'd personally make the change unless I could break even in the exchange.

Corner sharpness? If people are looking at the corners of your photos, then the photo was not that interesting to being with.
Unless it’s say a face or stars or another of other objects that would look out of place soft, the closer you get to the edge of your frame.

tb- photography well I mainly shoot nature and landscapes occasionally portraits . I’m gonna hop over to Fuji from my m50. I’m wondering the the 16-80 is worth the jump in price for WR. Either I start with one of those 2 zooms or a single prime.
Between those two both of the subjects you mentioned the 16-80 is better.
Both are a little soft at max zoom though.
But the 16-80 is great around the 50mm mark and fantastically sharp as a wide-angle.
What prime would you be considering? And do you plan/want to buy more lenses soon?
But really it all comes down to versatility vs quality.
A few primes will be much higher quality but will cost you more and require to changes lens etc between shots.
Or you could have the 16-80 which isn't as good but is all in one lens.
If you haven't had range of lenses before I personally would suggest getting the 16-80mm to start with. and then buy the right prime for the content you love to shoot.
(E.g. wide or zoomed etc)

Corner sharpness is awful on 16mm and 80mm, on shutterstock they don't even accept the photos, i get the focus reject :) only the center is well focused, the rest looks like shit.
It would be really interesting to have a test with your lens, not much I can say otherwise sorry, mine was great
