  • An interesting bit of amatuer 16mm footage of St Ives in Cornwall filmed in the 1930s (I suspect early 1930s). This includes images of St Ives town centre and the harbour. It is fascinating the way St Ives appears as busy then as it is now, almost 100 years later.
Apologies for the image quality...I am just glad the film has survived in any form. It is better than nothing.

That is THE best St IVES film I have seen so far and the most creative 😃 it has retained its beauty ( when the film was made ) until the tourist developers came that is

I do not know about anyone else, Lelant, and St. Ives looked better in the 1930's, than it does now! xx

I live very near St Ives and it is marvellous how little the majority of the place has not changed.

Hi, and thanks for the kind comment. Ben's music is a bit a god send. So often it suits the video, and you can trust that it really is copyright free. This matters because if the author of the music makes a copyright claim, all my work in buying and making the film is wasted. I like that my channels are not monetized and I would like to keep it that way! Bensounds helps with this. (BTW, I don't get paid or want adverts, although YT may place them anyway occasionally).

I think the original camera person from the 1930s deserves most credit, I just worked with what this person had left us. But thanks for the feedback...it is appreciated.

A fantastic video, well put together. We (the family) holiday in St. Ives and / or Lelant every year sometimes twice in a year (unfortunately Covid has put pay to that for a while). Love it there no matter the weather. Always worth the 300 mile journey each way. Interested to know who filmed the 30s footage and why 👍🏻

Thank you for your kind comment. I know the name of the family that filmed this, but I have no idea why. I have liked to imagine that the person had a sense of the importance of recording an everyday place, from an ordinary view, for posterity. A bit like writing something in a diary...

The `camera car' is either a Wolseley Series 1 or a Series 11 made from 1935 into 1937.
I saw that view through the windscreen many scores of times when I was a lad.

Yes when I was a kid we had a black Austin A40 . I always smile when I see them on films , brings back lots of memories of the good old days . Back in the good old days I remember going to a petrol station , they filled your car , and cleaned your windscreen for you , we didn’t know it then , but looking back it was a great time to live in England . We will never see things like that anymore . 👍👍

@@Cornish_Maid Your Grandad sounds like he was a great man who lived his life well. It is natural to feel loss when such people are no longer with us. I hope the better memories of what you had, rather than what is lost, stay with you.

I know by the sad situations a lot of the locals sold up and moved elsewhere but, they also sold their soul and the soul of the village itself. If only you could turn the clock back ……………

I lived in SI from 1945...in 2022 the place has become the Monte Carlo of the West; sun, sand, green sea, views and seagulls......but there is another side to St. Ives; if you don't live there, you don't know it.
