I keep and breed mostly 'softbill' song birds. I actually find them hardier and easier to care for then canaries or finches lol. And they get tame, and have intelligent and amusing personality. However, due to their diet of live insects, fresh fruit etc, it means that you can kiss goodbye to your holidays or weekends away....as your neighbour or friends will not not be able to just pop around the fill up their water and seed cups, as they would with canaries or budgies.
I got caught a few times when I was starting out with wild birds ie goldfinches and 2 pair's of bully's ring's pushed over their leg's out of the 4 pair's i got 1 pair of goldfinches went down and sat on the egg's but never feed so the second time she went down I put her eggs under a Irish fancy canary and she raised 2 of 5 the very same with the bully's 1 pair went down 6 egg's same problem as the goldies but feed her young to 3 day's so I put her next round under the biggest canary a large redfactor hen and unfortunately she wasn't able to get any to survive get advice Oliver.
Hi Chris, I have some good books on bird keeping and management, 2 that stand out (for me), are 'keeping British birds, by Frank meaden', and 'cage bird hybrids, by Charles Houston', great information on all aspects of the hobby. All the best. Mark.
