Raising brickwork to curved wall.
To maintain level throughout the course tingle or datum bricks should be laid at regular intervals along the wall.
As a mason, I kick back with a pint, and watch. Truly entertaining. Please make more videos Rob!
Hi Mick.
My general rule for foundations on boundary walls is a minimum 150mm deep foundation and for every 4 courses of brickwork above ground there should be one below ground, so for example the wall you see is 22 courses + tile & BOE, so say 24 courses above ground therefore I had 150mm + 6 courses ( total depth = 600mm)
Obviously, I concrete rather than use brickwork but this method determines the depth required. I hope this explains. Oh yes, min 100mm projection to both sides for spread.
Very highly skilled Bricklayer - every Bricklayer has preferences in the way they work. Great videos
Cracking job. Much better than what I could do. Tbf better that what most of these people on here can do
Amazing work rob. Your work is truly amazing
Thank you Edward, I appreciate your words.
These levels are my old ones, never throw them away, and the slimline Stabila are perfect for straight edges/profiles and they have the level bubble in them which w piece of timber doesn't.
My work levels are the Stanley Fatmax range now, and these won't be thrown away either.
I have only been laying for 3 years so I learn something every time i watch one of your videos. One curious thing I have noticed, a lot of British masons use a Philadelphia trowel and most masons here in the Southern USA use a London trowel. Whats up with that?
I think we are living in the wrong countries
thank you for watching
I’ve often wondered that same thing. Can’t even find philly trowels where I live. Have to order them.
Same here, everyone I work with makes fun of my Phillidelphia pattern trowel.
Thank you Michael, that was a nice comment
As a bricklayer with 27 years experience I take my hat off to you,I can't work without a radio while working on my own doing radius walls, they are a pain in the backside
Great video. Been bricklaying for a few years but a friend wants a double skin curved wall totalling 22 meters so I thought I'd do some research.
You actually build it the way I was planning.
Hello rob could you possibly do another video with your setting out the radial plywood template please as unfortunately the audio and visibility is of poor quality.
Can tell you know what you're doing Rob! I never see anyone turn the level when setting out, just in case your level is broken, bravo. Always used a Stabilo myself, why have you moved away to the Stanley Fatmax? Keep the videos coming, love watching pros!
ROB..FANTÁSTICO.....
The bricks being used are an extruded face brick with a crushing strength of around 20N,
so the mortar can afford to be reasonably dense, as long as it isn't stronger than the brick which is a common error with most builders...and architects these days.
I mix I use is 4:1:1/4, that is sand:OPC:lime.
The 'caps lock' button is the one to the left on your keyboard, press it and you'll be taken seriously. I take it you are going to post your own tutorial videos soon, we all look forward to them!
hi there, im doing a bricklaying diploma soon to be going level 2 i was just wondering whereabouts you are based as you have to be one of the best brickies i have seen on here. I have watched all your videos. and if possible would i be able to do a couple of days work experience with you. Many thanks. Anth.
great work Rob, please upload a video on 1 brick width bonds of common bonds
hi Nick,
please look at my video
bonding lesson 5
'various bonds'
Thanks let me check it out!
i think ur great at what u do i would work with u to learn more about bricklaying
does it have to be half bricks on that wall ore could u lay full size bricks ?
Any idea on how to build a radius and a ramp
are you looking for an apprentice!? iv been an apprentice brick layer for a year now and my boss has just ran out of work for us, so a bit stuck because i want to carry on learning! message back.
Hello Rob i really enjoy all your videos, one thing i need to know is how do you prepare your mortar really creamy?
that would be a common pigeon.
other sounds on my video's include me singing....not great
make sure a chippy don't see that level cramped to the wall arrrggg!!! could have just used a straight bit of timber
Nearly a minute per half brick? Must be day rate
Hello Rob are you an apprentice served bricklayer?
Ripper36068
yes, I did my 3 years City and Guilds and then a further 2 years of evening classes for my ONC.
Me to mate. I did my G&G at the old West Kent College in High Brooms (T. Wells) back in the mid 80's. And then progressed on a HND in civil engineering!
Ripper36068 I think you mean southbrough ( st Johns) it’s we’re I did my time , it was then moved down to Hastings , but now back on the west Kent site in Tonbridge ! 😊
Fell asleep by time u layed second brick
Gavin Fisher, In that case it wouldn't be much use anyone asking you to lay bricks :(
PLOD A LONG
COMPOOOOOOOOOOOO
slow
Do you ever earn any money? Hope you're not on a price
lynton3
Rob will not be on a price like on sites ffs. He will be making plenty plodding along doing the job he obviously can do better than most .....
dont do it matey this trade is dead end no future just back breaking and slave driven broken back b4 you are 40 get a computer job stay in skewl lol
PROFILE
WHAT IS HE DOING,LOL.BEEN BRICKLAYING FOR TWENTY YEARS ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS GUY IS TO SLOW AND FARTS ABOUT TO MUCH,WHY FIX A LEVEL TO THE WALL WHEN A PENCIL LINE IS ALL THATS NEEDED AND WHY PUT IN DATUM BRICKS.BRICKLAYING IS ALL IN THE EYE AND KNOWING THE SIZE OF BRICKS YOUR WORKING WITH AND KEEPING YOUR BED JOINTS CONSISTENT,AND HE ONLY LAID 12 BATT BRICKS IN SEVEN MINUTES,AND WHAT ABOUT THE MORTAR FAR TOO DRY,A BRICKLAYER NEVER TAPS A HALF BRICK ON RADIUS WORK.LOL....
You know nothing about brickwork Shaun! special types of brickwork take longer than just simply running bricks in a straight line! curved work normally takes twice the length of time to that of running in straight lines as you have more levelling points to consider as the wall rises! many brick layers today also use profiles when laying this is standard practice now! As for the datum.......simply good practice!
He is placing the 3 half's first because you plumb in 3 points on a Radius . That Craftsman will have people begging him to do work for them and a lot of people on sites would be embarrassed if he ever went on a House building site, Not that he will ever work on a big site
Let's see a video of your work, I want to compare it with his...
