    Bought one of these rods. 8 weigh 10 ft it’s fantastic. It’s very light, and casting is a dream with this rod. I have used it twice and I am casting further already, almost got a full 30 yds out. Playing fish is so easy, I can’t praise it enough. Thanks to you Rhys my fishing trips have got better already

    Great review!... Bought the #6 for bank fishing hill lochs where my #7 10' sage is too much gun for fish to 1lb. Really pleased with the Stillmaniac, exactly what I was hoping to find and being 4 piece I can strap it to my rucksack on the walk. Throws a very tidy line fishing a couple of wets or single dry on a floating line.

    Nice review. The missing hook keeper wouldn’t put me off. I’d just hook the fly in the bottom ring and dress the leader around the reel handle. I find I can drop the fly quickly and have more line out of the rod tip.

      I haven't used a hook keeper since I learned this trick. I hook the fly on the 3rd or 4th guide from the tip.
      Unloop from the reel and tap a few times, fly is in the water!

    I am torn between the 10’ #7 & #8 version, I am use to a Carbo Tec 9’6 #7, Shakespeare Odessa II 7-8#, Normark Gold medallion 9’6 #7-8 and even my very whippy Snowbee Diamond II 9’6 is a #7-8 (although I don’t get on too well with her) and my lines being mostly WF8’s, with the odd #7 line also, so would the 10’ #7 be the best choice as I understand she will punch out an #8 line just fine but will be better on presentation or should I just go for the 10’ #8 and enjoy the power… choices choices, advice please

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  10 місяців тому +1

      I haven’t had my hands on the 8 so can’t really give you an honest answer unfortunately. The 7 does cover off everything but I sometimes feel like it I’m fishing a di7 or booby Basher, I could do with something with a bit more strength, so maybe the 8 is a good option if you find yourself fishing those types of lines regularly. If not, opt for a 7. Tightlines

    • @saltroc1827
      @saltroc1827 9 місяців тому

      @@RhysFishes finally got my hands on the #8 and it’s amazing off the bat, I am surprised how light it was compared to my 20yr old Shakespeare’s which are fast action also. Some reports were that the #7&8 feel heavy but I guess it’s what you are use to because it was light and buttery smooth casting for me.
      Next task is to build a rod holder using the one in your Christmas ideas vid as a guide.

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  Рік тому +1

      I haven't tried any hardy reels so can't give a fair opinion on them but based on their price point they'd be considered the top end in terms of reel design and looks etc.. If you have the money then splash out. I use airlfo casette reels or the XLV and I find the XLV to be significantly lighter (to be expected given it's cost price) and the lighter real does make the fishing more comfortable :)

    Enjoyed watching this Rhys. Have to say this this was not my view on the rod. But each to their own. On the point you make about using your 9ft9 #6 for drys on small Stillwater, my opinion is that is ( overkill ) I see 9ft #4 ideal for a dry on a small Stillwater. And #5 for pulling or maybe a 6 on windy days...
    Never felt the need to use a #7 for fishing for mainly fish around 2-3 lb. is this something you choose differently based on your completion side of experience and prefer getting fish in quickly over enjoying the experience? Cheers Alex

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  3 роки тому +2

      Fishing is fishing mate and everyone will prefer different lengths/styles/actions of rods. I used to use a 5wt down garn but if the wind got up I was pissing into the wind with it so switched to a heavier 6wt outfit. Surprisingly i can still get away with 3lb tippet on garn with this rod (as long as you lift into rather than strike). But everyones different and find what works for you. Jer uses the 5wt onki and loves it 👍

      @@orkneytroutfishing4638 The 7wt will handle a midge tip and intermediate better than the 6. The 6 is ideal for bung, dries or straight lined nymphs / buzzers. Regarding the onki 6wt, I haven't tried it, but do use the 10 5wt. I'd say if your looking for a rod to pull on or fish heavier stuff, go for the 7wt Stillmaniac
