  • Can a single LED grow light replace both HPS & fluorescent T5s? Should LEDs include Far-Red diodes on their boards? What features should professional grow facilities look for in a horticultural luminaire? In this unboxing, video review, we look at the 320W LoPro Max LED grow light from Active Grow. Lots of PPFD light maps so you can see exactly how to position this light for your application!

    Active Grow asked me to review their LoPro Max 320W LED grow system. This entire review is independent & unpaid. The only thing I got from Active Grow was the light itself (a pre-launch box at no cost).
    FORM FACTOR: The LoPro LED plant light is a lightweight, low profile luminaire, safety rated for dust & water exposure. The 4 LED strips or light bars remind me a 4 ft, high output T5 fluorescent light. The LED is nice & open, allowing for maximum air flow. Overhead light sources (such as sunlight in a greenhouse) can reach the plants due to the open design.
    It's not just a T5 replacement. Of course, you can dim it to lower wattages for less demanding applications. By default tho, it produces much higher light levels. Active Grow's system is a serious LED upgrade. The 320W LoPro produces more light than the most efficient 400 watt HPS systems. It even competes well against 600 watt single-ended HPS lights. The LEDs are much more efficient than any fluorescent bulbs & have a significant edge over top of the line HIDs.
    You need to be realistic tho. To replace a 750W or 1000W HPS, you need the 640W LoPro. That especially applies to double-ended bulbs in electronic ballasts. When you account for power draw at the wall DE HPS grow lights can reach an efficacy of 1.7 to 1.8 µmol/J. But these LoPro LEDs pump out more photons per watt, reaching 2.4 µmol/J.
    PBAR: Plant Biologically Active Radiation encompasses a broader spectrum than traditionally defined PAR. PAR photons range from 400nm to 700nm. But PBAR spans 280nm to 800nm. And these LEDs include Far-Red diodes (7%). Accounting for those photons, you get an efficacy of 2.6 µmol/J.
    FAR-RED LIGHT: Looking at the latest in LED science, manufacturers are focusing on full spectrum LEDs. To truly achieve that, they've added Far-Red LEDs. Why Far-Red LEDs? For one thing, there is the "Emerson Effect" (Emerson Enhancement Effect). For decades, horticulture scientists have known that adding Far-Red photons to higher energy PAR photons can create a synergistic effect, resulting in increased photosynthetic efficiency. That means: More growth & plant mass!
    FINAL THOUGHTS: I really like Active Grow's LoPro Max LED system. It's a little larger than what I need for my Wintertime seedlings. If I had a nice full size bench, it would be a no-brainer. But these aren't designed for small-scale hobbyists. The 320W model is an ideal fit for a 2x4 grow tent. You can safely hang the lights nice and close for a super high DLI during the bloom cycle. These are also great for various rack systems. These are professional, commercial grade LEDs, rated to be safe & reliable. This single system can replace everything in your grow operation, starting with T5s & finishing off with HIDs.

    I greatly appreciated and enjoyed this video. I think what I liked the most is that you , from what I've also seen in some of your other videos, don't just take a product that is given to you and give a sounding review. You really take the time to show pros and cons of the product. While you do take the time to explain some of the terms used , some of it sounds like the alphabet to me. But you show how it works and that is really what is important to me. So while I may not know the terms used I am still able to understand the science of it because you explain it well. On top of all of that, I appreciate the humor. I mean who knew all of those special varieties of peppers were out there?

    Always looking forward to the bell indicating you've got another video out. Great review and wonderful job presenting. With typical outdoor tomatoes in my area thriving on 20-30 DLI of sunlight and day length of around 15 hours mid summer, this light has potential. Over 1,000 PPFD, and it might be necessary to inject some CO2 to take advantage of the plant growth, and a narrow overhead space with 6" hanging height that plants might grow into before burning leaves compared to an 18" hanging height. You had me running DLI on my LED grow lights, and I've made an adjustment based off of your findings. Thanks for helping everyone out.

    That's some serious grow science. I would have settled for lumen per-watt in various wave lengths. Thanks, definitely subbed.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +5

      Thanks for watching! Lumens per watt is great for home lighting. But LEDs with custom spectrums (including lots blue & red) aren't very compatible with that measurement method. So measuring PAR as PPFD is the way to go. But now scientists are even questioning that. Some are talking about redefining PAR to include Far-Red photons. It's all very interesting to me!

      This is how the two brands compare performance-wise: SF-1000 < SF-2000 < LoPro 320 < SF-4000 < LoPro 640
      To fit the proportions of your grow space, the LoPro 320 would be the best fit of any single unit. And it would have higher yield than an SF-2000. The best way to beat the LoPro 320 in your closet would be two SF-2000 positioned end to end. But this setup would need a little extra height for good light spread.

    also Far Red is helpful for us LED-Growers because it excites the water molecules and helps raising the internal temperature of the leafs thus creating more plantmass, besides that aforementioned emmerson effect, so adding far red is a win win, with little watts so much effect couldn´t get better than this . its like an BBQ-grill you can grill the meat at 50C° but the optimum range would be 130-140C°

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +6

      Hi Mike! Thanks for watching. The SF-2000 has a smaller footprint and it's only 2/3 of the power draw with 2/3 of the light output. Of course the SF-2000 costs less as well. Both are a good value. The form factors are different. So depending on what your application is, one light might be better than the other.

      I think that mylar works fine and it is easy to get and apply. You can find other options that might be a little better. But it depends on your budget and how crucial it is to salvage every possible photon. The critical thing is set up some sort of reflection when practical. Compared to nothing... mylar is excellent.

      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +4

      Price per PPF is a good approach for analyzing value. I recommend running those numbers personally when comparing your options. I've found that LED grow lights experience significant price fluctuations and there are regional differences in price as well. So I don't review that aspect of the product since my numbers could immediately become obsolete.

    Great and fair review as always but these new wide spaced
    bar light form factors are almost strictly designed for sea-of-green reflective
    tent growing to get the most out of them. As much as MARS tech is usually a
    year or 2 behind in tech, they are at least making narrow lights with
    reflectors for those of us that grow in an open grow space and have no interest
    in cana-peppers. That said there is no denying that the cana-pepper industry is
    ultimately financing the lighting technology industry including apogees new far-red sensor.

    Hi Al Gracian
    great review as always
    any thought on the cheap led from active grow (like the 9W T8 HO)?
    also i was wandering if you have any idea for reducing the distance between canopy and light at 30cm (for lettuce) and still having a nice coverage

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Ivan! I think the best value is the T5 LED ( amzn.to/2Z6xYJu ). The T8 HO LED is $199 for light output of 164 PPF. But their T5 LED is $229 with PPF of 240. That's 15% higher cost but 46% more light output. You can safely place these at 30cm away from lettuce. Or even less. The coverage area would be about 120cm x 34cm.

      Each has very similar light output. So you would need to compare cost and footprint. The SF-1000 is more of a point light source and would require a higher mounting height, like in a grow tent. The Active Grow T5 fixtures can be placed closer to the plants & would be ideal for racks.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +1

      If you look at the specs you can see the difference in light output. SF-2000 is 527 PPF. The LoPro is 768 PPF / 822 PBAR. The LoPro is a clear step above, although it is a not as high as the SF-4000 which is a 400W light. The SF-2000 cannot cover the same footprint that a LoPro can at tight mounting height and the dimming feature is not as convenient. Also, the Spider Farmer units are not designed for daisy chaining. So you are looking at 2 different form factors intended for slightly different applications.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +4

      Sorry, but the TS 3000 does not compare to the LoPro 640 in any way. The LoPro 640 has PPF light output of 1536 µmol/s. The TS 3000 is only 1096 µmol. So it might cost less, but it only outputs 2/3 of the light. There's no dimming knob. There's no mention of a UL Listing or IP65 rating. The warranty term is shorter. These 2 lights are totally different form factors. The TS 3000 has a small footprint (which might be good for some growers). And so it requires higher mounting heights. It is not acceptable for rack systems. And, despite the claims, it is not a "commercial" grow light. It's an ok option for budget growers who are not concerned about stringent safety standards and just want a single low budget unit for their home grow tent. But the LoPro Max is not intended for home growers who are trying to cut corners.

    With the ppf at 768 it looks like it would be better suited to grow lettuce.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +1

      A PPFD at a mere 10 hours of light would yield a DLI of 28. Lettuce is considered a low light plant. Typical maximum DLI values can be from 15 to 17 DLI. Ideal PPFD is from 250 to 300, with a maximum of 400 PPFD. So although this would work great for lettuce, it would either need dimmed or raised higher to cover a much larger area.
      This light did not peak at 768 PPFD. At 6" from the plant in a 2x4 tent, you would achieve average PPFD of 948. A 12 hr cycle would give 41 DLI. That is more than enough for high light, blooming plants.

    • @Skidmark75
      @Skidmark75 4 роки тому

      @@Albopepper I had watched a video of a professor at an actual university that had been studying cana peppers for years. He explained that cana peppers grew faster and yielded more with more light given to them. Unlike lettuce which has a peak point. I looked for the video but it has been removed. This site lists 1000w hps as having 1850 ppf. www.sanlight.com/en/about-ppf-and-ppfd/
      Maybe I am comparing apples and oranges, idk. But, it looks to me like those led lights and most LEDs sold for plant growth cannot compare with the light output of hps. One other downside of led that I have never seen addressed is the heat output from them. Most hps fixtures are sealed to the grow area and can be vented away from your plants. I have seen no way to isolate the heat from leds. Anyways this is my first and last time I will complain about leds. Just had to put my two cents in for once. Take care.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +6

      In this slide 4:03 I show general PPF output comparisons of HPS vs LED. And the generic 1000W HPS model matches up exactly with the spec that you've cited. And that exactly why I recommend comparing the 640W LoPro to a 1000W HPS. It's highly unrealistic to expect the 320W LED to compete against the 1000W HPS. That was explained clearly. You are correct that cana peppers can handle PPFD levels MUCH higher. A PPFD of as much as 2000 at the canopy can be utilized by them. But that also requires very serious environmental controls, including the use of CO2.

    *Im i the only idiot that noticed the flawed calculations from the get go!?* 4:11 320W LED= 400W to 600W HPS
    yet a 640W LED= 600W to 1000W HPS, shouldnt be simply double?! 640W LED= 800W to 1200W HPS no?!* this compagny does not look good making errors on simple math.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +4

      Superficially, what you are saying makes perfect sense. But not in real life application. 800W and 1200W HPS are less common, industry wattages for those bulbs. And as I explained in the video, it depends on whether the bulb is single ended or double ended. The LoPro 320W could compete against a _single-ended_ 600W HPS but the LoPro 640W would outperform a _double-ended_ 600W HPS. The info Active Grow listed is true and honest and consistent with the standard bulb wattage options that are most commonly available. They did not make an error. There is no point in disparaging them for listing honest model comparisons.
      There is no single uniform output for HPS systems. People need to stop assuming some generic standard. Just as LEDs have a *HUGE* range in efficacy, there is also a broad range in various HID technologies. But if you are seriously in the market, then you need to sit down and look at the specs for your lighting options and select the one that is best for your application. In particular, we need to give serious attention to the PPF output of any light.

    • @patrickdebellefeuille4196
      @patrickdebellefeuille4196 4 роки тому +2

      @@Albopepper I agree and under stand but im just pointing out that one picture has 4 rows the other 8 and is double the wattage so should it not be double the output, 100W= X so 200W= 2X output no?!

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  4 роки тому +4

      You are absolutely correct. The 640W is double the power and it has double the light output. The 320W has PPF output of 768 and the 640W is 1536 PPF. So everything checks out. The real problem is with HPS lights. A theoretical 800W HPS does not have the double the output as a 400W HPS. You'll be hard pressed to find a double-ended 400W HPS. But once the wattages hit 600W and higher, the double-ended feature becomes an option and so the light output jumps up.

    Not gonna happen at that price point. You can sell it all you want, 1k for a 640watt led will not compete agaimst a $300 1000w Gavita or the like. Galaxy G2 1000w dimmable and interchangeable digital ballast and air cooled hood under $500. Plus, leds hey hot as well and have no exhaust option. Sorry, but your comparison is very short sighted. If you selected a 1000w HPS rather than the comparable 640w LoPro, you would be bleeding out money in electrical costs. Not very forward thinking what-so-ever. The LoPro 640w would pay itself off with an ROI in 2 years time. That doesn't include savings in bulb costs or costs for cooling that heat hog of an HPS. Your Gavita sheds several hundred extra watts of heat. Of course it needs specialized cooling!
