I'm pretty new to this series. "By the time that light from M86 reaches Earth..." ??? I thought that Andromeda Ascendant was set in the Andromeda Galaxy, and not the Milky Way? Was this a scripting error, was there a planet called Earth in the series, or...???
It's set in the Milky Way, Andromeda and Triangulum(?) galaxies in the Local Group. Something about the slipstream they use for FTL travel. Slip routes can go to some very different places that aren't always right next to each other. Been awhile since I saw the series.
Andromeda Acendant is the Name of the Ship. Slipstream seems to be quite fast,so they travel between galaxies like shuttles between moons in other SF series. AFAIR the longest distance mentioned was 600 mio Ly,about the edge of the area known to the Commonwealth.
The series is set a good three thousand years into the future. At its peak, the Commonwealth spanned three galaxies; Milky Way, Andromeda, and Triangulum. Slipstream is the method of interstellar travel used to travel. The Commonwealth fell some three hundred years prior to the start of the series proper, but Slipstream travel remained. The Magog invaded from outside the Three Galaxies. It was making peace with them that led to the Nezchitean rebellion and the Fall of the Commonwealth. Here, Rommie is describing her mission to locate the Magog Homeworld, which was thought to be M86, but the fact that its nothing but black holes implies that they may have come from even further than that. So yes, Earth exists, but its not a nice place to be.
