I have one of these with the 2.0 and an automatic and I love it. The common fault with the fuel door on these is that the cable between the door and the actuator gets stuck. When I bought mine, the fuel door couldn't be closed. (At least I could fuel the vehicle!) The cable was stuck, and the actuator was roached from trying to move the stuck cable. One new cable and one new actuator later and I was back in business.

There are circumstances when you have warped rotors or a single rotor that you'll feel it in the brake pedal & not in the steering wheel . I have had this happen more then once where the lower ball joint was so bad that when the brakes were applied the steering wheel would shimmy so it's not true that when the brakes are applied and the steering wheel vibrates it's automatically the rotors . Another thing it's not true that when the front wheels are out of balance you'll only feel it in the steering wheel , you'll also feel it in the body (floorboard) or in the seat .

Watch out for junk cv axles. Had a bad experience when I decided to replace both cv axles due to one torn cv boot...ended up with a worse condition due to new axles that were not straight and caused vibration. Of course from China. Thought I had pinpointed a brand that claimed to be reman’d in Taiwan, hoping for decent quality...but merchandise I received turned out to be from China. After going thru all that hassle, I would have been glad to pay a knowledgeable cv rebuilder to rebuild all 4 original joints...but sadly I could not find a single shop that offers that any more. When I bought my 1994 Honda Accord with 267,000 miles, it had a vibration in the steering wheel from 60-70 MPH. I thought it was a bent rim. I took the rim off the car and brought it to a wheel repair shop, but they spun it up and told me there was nothing they could do; it was perfectly balanced. So I put the rim back on the car and my vibration was gone. It has never returned either. It was the most mysterious thing that ever happened to me.

For the shakes of ANY type, I start by checking there isn’t snow or dirt built up in the wheels. It’s free, and easy and in snow country happens surprisingly often. With the weight of snow and mud that can pack up in high offset wheels the shake can happen at any speed.

I had a CV joint go bad in a Kia Sportage, and in that case at first I could only feel vibration when accelerating or going up hill and mainly around 45 mph (later it would happen more often and at any speed above 40). It was hard to locate where the vibration was coming from, but I did notice it would disappear when I took my foot off the gas, and shifting gears didn't change it (other than disappearing during the shift) so I knew it wasn't the engine misfiring, even though it almost felt like that. It happened at about 95K miles, and the powertrain warranty actually covered it, so no cost to me for the replacement.

I bought my daughter a Beetle convertible of that generation. It was an absolute nightmare in my experience and all of this happened in the first 17,000 miles: The top hydraulics failed, the rear glass window separated from the canvas top. The microswitch that lowered the window when the door is open failed on both doors and is hard to replace. The rubberized dash turned to black goo. The speedometer failed. Both rear window regulators failed and are big bucks. Interior door skins were brittle and cracked causing the pull handles to break off. Several door window/lock switches same apart when using them too. Interior panels on sides of rear seat brittle and cracked themselves loose. The trunk would have to be slammed HARD to close and not able to fix it either. That car was a POS for sure, but I see lots of people love them and have good luck so this must have been a major lemon. It was actually embarrassed for VW because people I know were all horrified at the build quality when they saw it disintegrate in front of them. The only thing that worked on it was the powertrain so it's not all bad, lol.

Once dirt gets in the bearings it doesn't take long for them to be destroyed.

Thank you car wizard. I had a shake that started happening that felt at the feet and was really only happening under acceleration. I went outside and looked and of course my cv joint boot is torn.

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!

There's another obscure source of vibration and messed up alignment out there. IF your car has staggered wheels, espec where only the width is staggered, sometimes shops will rotate tires in an X pattern and put different width wheels on each side. This happened to me. It was exacerbated by a previous owner putting 245 ratio tires on all 4 wheels despite them being different widths (18x8s and 18x9s) so at a glance you don't realize they are different. Then on top of that he'd had the car aligned so it tracked straight. With 8s on one side and 9s on the other. So alignment was miles out. Didn't work that out till I was setting tire pressures and noticed the pressure chart had different wheels front and back. Then pulled wheels and read the sizes off the back and worked it out. One wheel swap and an alignment later and it finally tracked straight with minimal vibration. Final step will be new tires with correct geometry. I hope to eliminate all remaining vibration with that.

That shouldn't be a problem at a competent shop though it does happen occasionally, especially if it's a staggered setup on a fwd car.

@@ashravenpb the fact it has 4 identical tires on it that make it look apparently a square setup was a real good disguise. It wasn't till I Iooked at the tire pressures chart and noticed it was SUPPOSED to have 245/45r18s in front and 255/45r18s in rear that I figured it out. It had 245s all round. It actually still does, but I'll be sorting that later once I'm back in the US. The nextdoor neighbours kid needs some new 245s on the front of his Ford so I've said he can have mine once I pull them and replace them with 255s. He's broke as shit and his tires need replacing but he's a good kid.
Only shop I held this against was the "Jaguar specialist" the previous owner took it to cos they should know.
Everyone else I gave a pass. My alignment guy who is also a great mechanic but not a jag specialist laughed out loud when I figured it out and did the re-alignment/correction for free. You leave wheels on for alignment.
Moral of the story is with used cars, check everything against manufacturer specs, pull the wheels and actually read the sizes off the rims. Don't trust the tires. Cos someone might have put the wrong ones on. And then another shop dutifully rotated them as if they were square. When you say staggered wheels, everyone assumes different radius only. Nope, sometimes they are just different widths. And you won't know unless you look it up.

Is a warped rotor going to telegraph into electronic steering?

  • @davidheal4623
    @davidheal4623 2 роки тому

I have heard that the "warped rotor" steering wheel pulsation is not necessarily due to a "warped rotor" but instead could be caused by hardened uneven deposits on the rotor. Do you find this to be true?

I had a 06 convertible new beetle with the 2.5 that isold 2 years ago and I miss it . The interior painted plastic will break really easily so dont lean on them . Ill suggest getting interior metal door handles .
