Yeah to me that scene states exactly what and who Horde Prime is A tyrant and a monster. when he off hardly tells how the dish they are eating is rare becasue the planet it came from no longer exists he does it like it's nothing, casue to him it is. the entire universe is his toy to play with and discard when it suits him But Glimmer is horrified, and even Catra is upset but she eats a little to keep up appearances, though you can tell by the looks they give each other, they’re both out of their league and there’s a predator standing right before them.
Horde Prime reminds me a lot of Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They both speak of doing good things and believe themselves to be good people when reality they are both hypocritical fanatics who are interested of enforcing their own will on the people of the setting.
I really like the subversive take when it comes to the depiction of Horde Prime. Hordak's red eyes are stereotypically seen as an evil color, but in this context it can be seen as a symbol of his individuality in contrast to Prime's green which is usually associated with good. And while the Fright Zone is dark and gloomy, Prime's ship is bright and clean. Basically everything you wouldn't connect with evil.
That's such a good take on this, I didn't even notice that. It shows everything narcissistic villain usually is: Someone who has a facade they show everyone, but is truly a bad person that shouldn't be trusted by anyone.
@@nenakarra2579 Ngl, this made me want to cry, it's so sad to me that the Horde had so many child soldiers, and that Catra and Adora only had each other when living there.
Giant props to Keston John for his terrifying performance as Horde Prime. His speech and tone are so unsettling. And it is so contrasting to what he did with Hordak, whose intimidation relied on rage. Prime is so collected and detached, it makes you uncomfy really fast.
Keston John's the most talented member of the cast, aside from maybe Grey DeLisle, and that's really saying something when a cast includes AJ Michalka.
The fact Keston voices Hordak, Wrong Hordak, Horde Prime, and the Horde clones but manages to give each one their own style, character and personality to the point that they feel distinct though he’s voicing them all, is a testament to what a great actor that man is.
He’s how you write a genuinely terrifying villain. He’s like Hordak in ways, but he (and by extension Noelle as the writer) truly follows the philosophy of “show, don’t tell.” Everything scary about him is because he’s SHOWN us what he can do while “purifying” his “chosen”
Catra is in full on survival mode. Being bold and defiant has only made things turn out badly up until this point. She's lost Adora (at least she thinks she has) she's lost Scorpia, her friends who she grew up with, and now she doesn't know what will or won't get her or Glimmer both killed so she's bending the metaphorical knee.
The term comes from the phrase "an iron fist in a velvet glove", refering to someone who uses charm and gentility to belie their brutal nature. Perfection.
The extendable staff Adora uses in this season is similar to the ones used by Horde cadets during their training (just a little fancier looking), which was probably one of the things that clued Adora in to the fact Huntara was a defector from the Horde when they first met.
Exactly. She was training as a soldier- and using a staff - long before she picked up the sword. The idea that she was useless without She-Ra was a bit much.
I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: Horde Prime is AMAZING. He was built-up for multiple Seasons and dear Lord, does he NOT disappoint in the slightest now that he is finally here. Every Scene he's in, he OOZES power, menace and control, in large part due to his amazing Voice Actor. His presence completely eclipses Catra and Hordak as Villains, despite all the time we spent with them. They are but infants playing Conquerors by comparison. This Guy is the real deal.
I agree to a point. He is definitely intimidating. But, my personal opinion is, I would have enjoyed seeing him more if he wasn't as quickly defeated. I know they only had one season, so I get why he was eventually defeated much more easily than I expected. But I personally wouldn't have minded if the show was drawn out for longer, perhaps a 6th season where they're still struggling with Horde Prime, but a large plot point still occured in the 5th season. Horde Prime has destroyed millions of planets and people. It would have really kept me in suspense if they not only showed how intimidating he was, bit also showed the sadistic, calculating villain no one can seem to defeat. Like, make him analyse Catra more than he did,and constantly make you wonder if he knows she's lying or not. Make him think ahead when you thought the plan would be a success. Make him give incredibly scary consequences, let him be the reason someone loses something important to really let the hopelessness sink in.
@@feedthedemon1385 I agree that season 5 should have been made two seasons, so twice as long. *spoiler warning* This would also make Catra's redemption arc better since it could have episodes focus on her apologising to the different people she's hurt.
@@eddy1516 Agreed! I also feel that since the beginning, they should have added more bits off her doubting her actions throughout the series. Spoiler warning: It would have added more depth to her character. Her redemption arc felt like a change that wasn't entirely her own choice, and seemed like the only option left, considering the only other one was Horde Prime, and no one would choose that. I want Catra to have more autonomy over her redemption, and for it to feel relieving when it happens because there's been several signs she didn't want this for seasons
I think a villain cannot be called "AMAZING" only based on a single episode where he doesn't do more than talking. I mean, sure, the smart and evil control freak vibe is there, but from a galactic emperor with absurdly advanced technology i was hoping to not see other battles where the enemy robot army is as easily defeated as Hordak bots. And yeah, i know, those bots were improved by Entrapta and she's a tech genius, but he's the guy who conquered millions of planets going around the universe with spaceships. Horde-Prime is a villain introduced in a compelling way but most of the impression is merit of the voice actor more than anything else at this point.
@@feedthedemon1385 Agreed! I do think we kind of got to know that being an villian was "never what she really wanted" because that's exactly what DT said. But a longer setup for het redemption would have been nice. *spoiler warning* My biggest problem with it however, is how quickly everyone forgave her. In episode 2 the other princesses are seen holding a grudge against Entrapta, but nothing like that is shown with Catra, it's just "she tried killing us for years, but she's with us now" "oh ok". I think some more scenes where they are suspicious of Catra would have been great, as well as Catra being more excluded from the group.
A scorpion stings. I think they went for a similarity of an electric shock to the sting from a scorpion to define her princes powers nature . Design wise.
I found the scene between Glimmer and Catra really interesting. Glimmer notices that Catra is also at top, but alone, leading to a understanding (?) because of their similar position. Catra says that "as long as she is of use to Horde Prime, she has a place in this world" she's surviving, knowing she has no one left, she tries to be usefull to the one in power for protection.
2 more weeks until 'corridors'! 4 more weeks until 'save the cat'! 11 more weeks until 'heart'! I am so excited for these episodes, season 5 is my comfort season and I can't wait to see your reaction to it
I love Save the Cat but I feel Taking Control is underrated for the scene where Adora transforms at will without the sword for the first time. In that moment we are all Catra.
i don’t think catra herself even knows what her motivations are at this point. She’s still struggling with what double trouble said, but i think a sudden complete 180 in her character wouldn’t make sense. She’s slowly starting to do some self reflection, i think she’s still struggling with the idea that redemption is possible, she doesn’t know if it’s too late for herself or if she could possibly be a better person. she’s at a fork in the road.
To the “why does scorpia have electricity if she’s a scorpion discussion” I always took it as the venom of a scorpion can be paralytic/tranquillizing, and that electricity can have that same sting/paralysis property
The fact that this is the WEAKEST episode of season 5 really speaks to the quality of the season. You get a lot of setup for what the running arcs going forward will be. Adora's overworking herself even when she doesn't need to, overcompensating for the loss of She-ra. Glimmer is being punished very hard for the mistakes she made last season. Catra is feeling lost in the face of a bully who's impossibly stronger than herself, and her true fears beginning to surface. Scorpia is integrating very well with the Princesses, but Entrapta is still adjusting, running into danger and making mistakes. Bow is trying to look after Adora and work with Entrapta at fixing the space ship so they can save Glimmer, shoving his own feelings down. Horde Prime is so overwhelmingly confident that he has invited the enemy into his home - he does not think Catra needs containment, because there's nothing she can do, and the fancy conditions of the prison cell add insult to injury to a terrified Glimmer.
You can gleam a ton of information about Horde Prime just by the way his clones behave and how they speak about him. The clone Adora's team captured revered Prime as a living god who's reach and power are absolute. Most telling, though, is how the clone seemed aware it was simply a cog in the Galactic Horde's machine, but it felt elevated and empowered by the greater purpose Horde Prime had supposedly given him. This, in addition to the towering cathedral-esque interior of his flagship, conveys that Prime is the definition of a cunning cult leader with a military to backup his message. He needs his clone followers to be eternally reverent towards him to maintain his status. To do this, his clones need to feel like they're empowered enough to feel like a vital part of this empire (like a general that commands the mechanized forces), but not so much that they become aware of the fact they are disposable pieces in his grand design. These facts also make me wonder if Hordak's defect isn't his frail body, but his individualistic mindset. I have a theory that Prime's clones aren't meant to operate individually for extended periods away from the areas lacking the Horde's presence and resources. Perhaps the physical decay is a built-in failsafe to ensure any clones that are separated from Prime's network will eventually die, thereby eliminating the potential problem of rogue followers starting their own independent regimes as Hordak did. All the clones may see themselves as grand generals leading the march of Prime's vision, so it makes sense that they would continue to follow their mental conditioning if left to their own devices. And that's why Horde Prime is obsessed with complete control over his followers and his image. Even the slightest question of his indominable rule opens the door to uncertain, individual-based outcomes. Its the one thing he hates most; a disorderly existence that is beyond his power to control. So he'll go to horrific lengths against both followers and foes to ensure his image remains immaculate.
To add on to that, Horde Prime can usually read the minds of all of his clones, but wasn't able to with Hordak, and this immediately makes him realize that Hordak had named himself. This sort of implies that when his clones begin to recognize themselves as individuals, Prime loses his power over them.
I think Shadow Weaver genuinely saw 2 people as children. Adora who she raised from birth basically and Micah who she felt a strong magical bond with and wished the best for..even after her transformation it seemed. So she genuinely likes them, as much as she can.
On Scorpia "not having scorpion powers" - Frosta isn't a living ice-person; she's human. Perfuma isn't a walking plant, she's human. Mermista isn't a fish, she's human. What they _are_ is separate from what they _do._
Kenny arguing his terrible point about Perfuma was the most entertaining thing about this video lol and She-Ra does fit the naming scheme because she's basically He-Man, but she instead of he
I have a theory that horde prime was an ex first one because he has lived for a long time and when mara said how will destroying world's bring peace that reminded me of horde prime because he wants to destroy everything and start over 🤔❤️
I'm thinking he was similar to hordak like an outcast to the first ones so he created his own empire. It explains how he knows every shera and is so knowledgeable about their legacy
You ever watch the show dubbed in another language? I can't help wondering if the voice actors all make him sound like a cult leader to their cultures, or if that's too uniquely American to really pull off in other cultures.
@@jimballard1186 mild spoilers later in this. I only speak English so sadly no. that said, a lot of his religious stuff is very much a Christian/Catholic idea so I can see it very much translating well. all the talk about him seeing all, the light, purity, calling people "brother/sister", the corrupted baptism making people pure. A lot of that stuff will translate languages if the culture has experience with Christianity. I know he gives off big generic cult leader vibes too and I do think the brand of Christianity here might be very american I don't think it's exclusively so. organized Religion vs spirituality becomes a major subtheme this season.

It's interesting the dichotomy between the aesthetics of the Horde and the Galactic Horde. The Fright Zone is a dark and dingy industrial maze, with red lights and brown metal. Prime's flagship is all sterile white and silver, brightly lit corridors with neat and symmetrical architecture, and sickly green lights.
2:29 yeah the stuff its like what she used back in the horde training, also the musicplaying in the back, i belive its the same from the first episode when we meet adora while training
Oh yes, Horde Prime is an incredible villain, very innovative for a kids' show too. The contrary to the classic "all bark no bite". Terrifying for several reasons. My heart hurts for Catra thinking she can still be in control. She doesn't Even realize Horde Prime is playing another game than the one she was teached altogethet. Also for Glimmer, because, poor baby.
I feel like their powers are an extension of not only their character looks but also their personal traits. Mermista can be unbothered like the waters but fights and cares about things that do bother her (horde soldiers, Seahawk singing shantys, etc). Perfuma is a very peace and nature based person. She’s very in tune with herself and those around her. Scorpia is kind but has an electric personality (very charming, loving, and just has a gorgeous electrifying energy). Bo is smart and quick- hence the bows and arrows, as well as the tech within them and some general tech. Glimmer looks young but shines bright, and Adora honestly has a savior complex (hence the height, growing larger when she’s Shera) and a need to be invincible in order to save others. And in Entrapta’s case she’s wicked smart and thinks mostly like a machine with emotions mixed in here and there (I mean this in the best way possible and love her so much. I mean: what would bother most people socially doesn’t bother her, and she’s focused on outcomes and experiments) Frosta is literally a bit frosty when dealing with others, but can warm up. Firm but fair, and unbiased
20:19 Did anyone else see that? When she said 'Are' it glitched. It went 'What her best moves and strategies a-are'. I replayed it and still heard it so I'm pretty sure it's an actual video glitch lmao
I loved your discussion about scorpias powers because it’s a great example of the type of conversations I tried to have with loved ones, discussing different sides and such while just enjoying the conversation, but I get told I’m just arguing but I’m not. I’m just trying to talk about a topic and if we have differing views we can explain that to each other especially when it’s a topic that’s inconsequential and just insignificant. I couldn’t have simple conversations, I couldn’t even state that I didn’t know where a song was from, without getting insulted and told I’m arguing. I’ve stopped interacting with people who do that and my relationships have never been better. It was refreshing to see this conversation, it spiked my anxiety because of the experiences I’ve had with similar conversations, I was waiting for one of you to be mean or cold cause that’s what I’ve learned to expect when I have those conversations. But you didn’t do that. You just had a conversation. And it really made it click for me that I made the right choice cutting off my friend of ten years who was the main culprit of me feeling this way. I don’t feel guilty anymore. I should’ve been able to have these kinds of conversations without being made to feel like crap. You guys just perfectly demonstrated that it’s possible and reasonable to discuss opposing points and be friendly.

When creating the character of Horde Prime Stevenson used cult leaders (the leaders of suicide cults in particular, I believe) as inspiration, and the sterile megachurch-like architecture of Prime's ship and the structure of the Galactic Horde itself reflects this. Prime is effortlessly calm and in control in a way that is DEEPLY unsettling, and the fact that he clearly has the power and intelligence to back his ego only enhances that feeling.
One of the best things about Horde Prime is that he 100% buys his own hype. It's not false bravado like it is with Hordak, this is a man who truly believes that he is a god.
I think the connection between Scorpia and her powers has more to do with her kingdom being the Fright Zone since scorpions and lightning are pretty common fears, but it could also be that they both sting/paralyze
i agree with both of you on that scorpia discussion - scorpia's powers do not mesh very well with her name and appearance, but also lightning powers is way cooler than poison powers would be. (comics spoilers) fire powers would have been cool (given scorpion --> desert) but there is a lost fire princess from the comics. i dont know the details with that but it means fire is already spoken for
When you're done with She-Ra PoP, you guys should react to at least one or two episodes of the original She-Ra, just for fun. It's a trip after watching this!
In regard to the names vs the powers, I have a fan theory: Scorpia's family gave the black garnet to Hordak before Scorpia was born. The other princesses were named based on the family runestone, but since Scorpia's family runestone had already been given away, they instead gave her a different name that reinforces her connection to her family.
the whole perfuma perfume thing REALLY ticked me off idk why😭 i think of flowers when i think about perfume! she literally was making a great point. from the outside looking in he was really shutting her down man 😭
.....I will be blunt. If Horde Prime looked slightly less, uh, green (the teeth weird me out too much), I would probably have a very tough time watching this. Hmmmmmmmm. The voice acting is very very good.
Fun fact: Scorpia having electricity powers actually makes a degree of sense from the perspective of her BEING a scorpion! Scorpion venom actually affects the autonomic nervous system in a person's body, and brain and nerve activity is essentially an electrical signal! Electricity in the human body can also disrupt nerve signals, like scorpion venom, so her having electric abilities actually makes sense!

That's such a good take on this, I didn't even notice that. It shows everything narcissistic villain usually is: Someone who has a facade they show everyone, but is truly a bad person that shouldn't be trusted by anyone.
I think the light colors make it look scarier and in some way creepy, more than the fright zone's colors

The fact Keston voices Hordak, Wrong Hordak, Horde Prime, and the Horde clones
but manages to give each one their own style, character and personality to the point that they feel distinct though he’s voicing them all,
is a testament to what a great actor that man is.
Love how the captions show "fedora" and "adorable" for "Adora"
There is also ‘with Dora’
Fun fact, Horde Prime's ship interior was designed after Megachurches. Also his theme has gregorian chants to emphasize his religious symbolism.
All of the religious trauma Horde Prime is representative of is so profound.
SHE REACHED OUT TO WHERE CATRA SLEPT!😭😭
just a friendly recommendation, watch each intro this season! it changes a lot!!!
Yeah, Prime's gotta be one of the coolest villains in animated television.
He's just bone-chilling, and his VA isn't helping matters lol
@@rainbowangel5264 Keston John is the GOAT
I would be terrified to be in the same room as him
He’s how you write a genuinely terrifying villain. He’s like Hordak in ways, but he (and by extension Noelle as the writer) truly follows the philosophy of “show, don’t tell.” Everything scary about him is because he’s SHOWN us what he can do while “purifying” his “chosen”
Tbh a big sign that Catra doesn’t actually wanna follow Horde prime is when she doesn’t do the evil smirk(tm) in 11:36
Catra is in full on survival mode. Being bold and defiant has only made things turn out badly up until this point. She's lost Adora (at least she thinks she has) she's lost Scorpia, her friends who she grew up with, and now she doesn't know what will or won't get her or Glimmer both killed so she's bending the metaphorical knee.
Word from the authors is Horde Primes flagship is named "The Velvet Glove," could you imagine naming a ship something so indulgent?
The term comes from the phrase "an iron fist in a velvet glove", refering to someone who uses charm and gentility to belie their brutal nature. Perfection.
@@Bomolochus that is perfect
The extendable staff Adora uses in this season is similar to the ones used by Horde cadets during their training (just a little fancier looking), which was probably one of the things that clued Adora in to the fact Huntara was a defector from the Horde when they first met.
Exactly. She was training as a soldier- and using a staff - long before she picked up the sword. The idea that she was useless without She-Ra was a bit much.
1:03 that version is so good i wish they had used it in the season 5 intros
also the "Hey Adora" at the end 😍🥴 love it

I can't wait for Save the Cat, so I can relive foaming at the mouth.
Elevated heart rate dilated pupils adora means something to you
Hell yeah she does
He's good. Like, scary good
No, she doesn't. Adora chose her side, I chose mine. She doesn't mean anything to me.
A scorpion stings. I think they went for a similarity of an electric shock to the sting from a scorpion to define her princes powers nature . Design wise.
ITS HERE! I’m (and I assume everyone else) is so hyped to see what you guys think of season 5
I found the scene between Glimmer and Catra really interesting. Glimmer notices that Catra is also at top, but alone, leading to a understanding (?) because of their similar position. Catra says that "as long as she is of use to Horde Prime, she has a place in this world" she's surviving, knowing she has no one left, she tries to be usefull to the one in power for protection.

i don’t think catra herself even knows what her motivations are at this point.
I am counting the days until “Save the Cat”.
Don't forget corridors!! They'll love that one
22:04, Ok, about that part, can he hear her heartbeat?
OK I'm just gonna quote Razz here... 'She ra isn't a sword, she ra is you.'
Emphasis on the YOU
To the “why does scorpia have electricity if she’s a scorpion discussion” I always took it as the venom of a scorpion can be paralytic/tranquillizing, and that electricity can have that same sting/paralysis property
I’m pretty sure the idea behind Scorpia having lighting powers is the paralyzing/shocking effect of a scorpion’s sting 😅
Horde Prime is so overwhelmingly confident that he has invited the enemy into his home - he does not think Catra needs containment, because there's nothing she can do, and the fancy conditions of the prison cell add insult to injury to a terrified Glimmer.
is this the weakest
important thing about this season, you need to watch the intro in all the episodes, because it changes almost every time
It doesn't start changing until about halfway through the season, but yeah definitely keep an eye out
The opening for this season changes a lot, so make sure to watch it every time in case the opening changes!
18:53 "You like the food? A planet *DIED* to make it."
I think Shadow Weaver genuinely saw 2 people as children. Adora who she raised from birth basically and Micah who she felt a strong magical bond with and wished the best for..even after her transformation it seemed. So she genuinely likes them, as much as she can.
i cant belive you finaly got to season 5 omg this is going to be so good
On Scorpia "not having scorpion powers" - Frosta isn't a living ice-person; she's human. Perfuma isn't a walking plant, she's human. Mermista isn't a fish, she's human. What they _are_ is separate from what they _do._
Kenny arguing his terrible point about Perfuma was the most entertaining thing about this video lol and She-Ra does fit the naming scheme because she's basically He-Man, but she instead of he
I think the scorpia lightning power thing is related to the idea of paralysis! a scorpion can stun you, like electricity. Not sure tho!
Starting season 5, lets goo
I have a theory that horde prime was an ex first one because he has lived for a long time and when mara said how will destroying world's bring peace that reminded me of horde prime because he wants to destroy everything and start over 🤔❤️

21:37 Adora's A Natural Born Leader With Or Without She Ra.
The religious symbolism of horde prime is so creepy
I can’t even describe the immense excitement I have experience in every Tuesday when I watch your Videos
Catra: You've beaten me at my own game.
Horde Prime: Don't flatter yourself. You were never even a player.
I literally had a countdown in my phone for this I’m so excited
I mean: what would bother most people socially doesn’t bother her, and she’s focused on outcomes and experiments)
Frosta is literally a bit frosty when dealing with others, but can warm up. Firm but fair, and unbiased
15:08 "Scorpions exist in places where lightning happens" hahhahajajajhahaja
Adora losing her powers reminds me of Korra losing her powers.
Linking deserts to lightning is a surprisingly pervasive idea.

"What's perfume made from?"

Im so excited for this episode!! I can't wait!
I would say the connection for Scorpia and Electricity is the idea of paralysis
I think the connection between Scorpia and her powers has more to do with her kingdom being the Fright Zone since scorpions and lightning are pretty common fears, but it could also be that they both sting/paralyze
i agree with both of you on that scorpia discussion - scorpia's powers do not mesh very well with her name and appearance, but also lightning powers is way cooler than poison powers would be.
(comics spoilers)
fire powers would have been cool (given scorpion --> desert) but there is a lost fire princess from the comics. i dont know the details with that but it means fire is already spoken for
Scorpions stings, electricity stings

When you're done with She-Ra PoP, you guys should react to at least one or two episodes of the original She-Ra, just for fun. It's a trip after watching this!
The princesses powers come from the RUNE STONE not from what race they are. Is Perfuma an actual flower? Is frosta an ice cube?
In regard to the names vs the powers, I have a fan theory: Scorpia's family gave the black garnet to Hordak before Scorpia was born. The other princesses were named based on the family runestone, but since Scorpia's family runestone had already been given away, they instead gave her a different name that reinforces her connection to her family.
It's so sad, that it will soon be over XD Can't believe you're at the final season already....

Lightning and Scorpions Sting lol
19:10 that’s the doll from the kid with Adora earlier…that kid’s dead isn’t she?
4:23 Catra's Not In Charge She's Treated More Like An Honored Guest.
Horde Prime just reminds me a lot like Tywin Lannister in his methods and mantra.
(At 20:12) I think Catra MIGHT need some new development.
