We have a pile of loot. We cast detect magic, will it detect a wand of magic missile that has 0 charges remaining? A ring of water breathing with 0 charges? That sorta thing, or will the wand register as a stick?

When you first cast the spell, you'll sense magic within 30 feet of you. Then, you'll use an action to hone in on the source of the magic, which allows you to see a faint aura around the wand and learn that the wand possesses evocation magic (because Magic Missile is an evocation spell). To learn the specific properties of the wand, you'll need to use the Identify spell, or spend a short rest identifying it (DMG 136).
