+Reto Hofmann Yeah, I always thought a chamber orchestra is not capable of creating a rich texture but this performance really proves that the ensemble is modest in size but but surely not modest in ability.
Это мой любимый композитор и одно из обожаемых мной его произведений! Серенада звучит в великолепном зале с прекрасной акустикой, которая добавляет произведению торжественности и яркости звучания.
Alla Shokel Спасибо, дорогая Алла! Очень приятно всегда читать Ваши комментарии. Я долго выбирала вариант и остановилась на этом. Единение музыки и архитектуры.
I'm playing this in my highschool orchestra! Movements one and two, my favorites. I don't know why I don't like the third movement. Maybe because it's not exactly slow or fast, the in between. Either way, Tchaikovsky and Shosty are awesome! Keep it up you Russians.
Tchaikovsky said of this music: "It literally flows from my innermost being." Who could argue after hearing this? The reverberation reminds me of an online recording I heard of his "Hymn Of The Cherubim" (Liturgy Of St. John Chrysostom). Like that work, it is out of this world...almost choral, as has already been commented upon.
What has always mystified me with beautiful classical masterpieces, is that when you close your eyes, the musoc seems to elevate and become so much more than the sum of all the instruments. It's hard to put into words. It's a heavenly sound.
I love Catherin's Palace, Vaganova Ballet Academy organizes there beautiful graduation balls each year and rector hands out diplomas to students. Such a wonderful place, nice for a concert too.
The composer asks on the score for a full-orchestra instrumentation. H. von Karajan did that in his recording at DGG. But this chamber-orchestra interpretation recoded in a BIG room with a rich acoustic characteric gives a celestial feel to this piece. Yum to me.
The reverb is certainly heavy, but there is no audience to absorb sound. Personally I would love to attend a performance in that beautiful hall with those very talented and attractive young performers. Perhaps some day I will get the chance to visit St.Petersburg and enjoy some of the attractions of that fascinating city. Spasibo!
Creo que es una de las piezas musicales de mayor romanticismo. El "andante cantábile" es de una sublimidad incomparable. Tchaikovsky representa la cúspide entre los compositores rusos de todas las épocas.
It takes a lot of heavy emotions to come up with something like this, really. Shame that Tchai was so opressed back in his day, but that maybe "helped" him to compose some heavy emotional songs. The guy is a genius, a complete genius!
Well, he had lots of money coming from patronage, but he suffered with his sexual orientation. He was the opressor, so to speak, Tchai regarded himself as an aberration, a freak. The high quality of his work never oscillated, but is a well know fact that he lived a very sad life. Fake mariages, depression, etc He suffered a lot.
+patrick yi not several, just one marriage that lasted 2 weeks. In life Tchaikovsky was a happy man and baroness fon Mekk funancially suported him, so he was going places, buying things and indulging.
patrick yi Financially, for sure. But emotionally..? I don't know, it doesn't seem so. After all, if i'm not mistaken, they only communicate via letters, never on person. In the early days they used to be friends, but after von Meck started to financially support him, it creates this tension and feeling of awkwardness that comes naturally for most persons in those situations. Also there was the social oppression, she broke the patronage to protect Tchai for scandal for example, etc... Its was a very complicated bourgeoisie thing, lol With all the social oppression regarding his sexual orientation + the scrutiny of von Beck supporting for so long a person who was bad at managing money, it ended up creating lots of stress and ruptures on their relationship. Considering all the problems, I can't see Tchaikovsky having a happy life, honestly. Even with all the money and extravagances in the world.
Rafael Teles Well, aside from everything, I heard that he even as a child was incredibly impressionable with his emotions having always been rather turbulent. I think it is safe to assume that although he suffered inside, he must have lived for something to some point at least. I mean he had, to some extent, Iosif Kotek and their relationahip (despite the fact that in his situation and his own fears of him self it probably brought even 'more' tension to his mind). I guess my point is that despite his rather neurotic nature he was probably in persuit of some happiness and looking for how to enjoy life. (Even though in the end, most still believe that 'he' was the one to end it).
BEAUTIFUL ROOM AND ORCHESTRA, BUT THE ACOUSTICS OF THE ROOM HAVE MADE IT TOO DIFFICULT FOR THE ENGINEERS TO RECORD WITHOUT DISTORTION......ESPECIALLY LISTENING IN HEADPHONES.....
LISZTIZATION It's not the best sound, but it's nice to have variety. There are many recordings of the piece that present excellent sound quality. I enjoyed listening to the piece in a room such as this.
This interpretation is an incredible definition of beauty and pleasure. Thanks to the musicians, the conductor and Tchaikovsky. Thanks simply for living
I first heard this as a small introduction to the segment on the history and later Soviet restoration of the Catherine Palace on an episode of National Geographic Documentaries (S1987E04). I fell in love with it. I just stumbled across this and it was like reliving that initial thrill as a kid again. For anyone who is interested, that episode of National Geographic is available elsewhere on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/HP7XWe6jGyI/v-deo.html
Today - September 14, 2012 - Baron Eduard Alexandrovich Faltz - Fein celebrated 100 years. We heartily congratulate the hero of the day! We made this video at the personal request of Eduard Alexandrovich. Olga Vladislavovna Taratynova, director of the Catherine Palace, responded to the hero's request and helped in organizing the video filming. The string quartet "Amfir", the chamber orchestra "Carpe Diem" (art director Raisa Ulumbekova), conductor Pablo Marqués (Spain) and Nadezhda Kuznetsova (organizer), St. Petersburg, Russia - with love took part in the concert!
I agree about the reverb but feel that the beautiful playing and the magnificent setting of St Catherine's Hall offer an exceptional musical experiences #collinsm.com
Same. I like how good music in games, makes people learn about richer and fuller music. Lots of folks have getting enamored with 50s songs from playing Bethesda Fallout games too.
An Absolutely Brilliant performance with a terrific ending that would make any audience give a rousing standing ovation, Bravo !!!!!
Thank you🙏😌
You don't need many musicians to create a wall of sound if the acoustics of the room are that good. Wonderful.

If this were the final thing I'd hear before dying, I would die with happiness in my heart and a smile on my face.
Beautiful.
Tchaikovsky, along w Wolfgang, gives me faith in the human race... 🎻

the echo is frighteningly beautiful. So effective with strings. My god, this is everything!
Such precision with the tonic and turnarounds!
Just wonderful music and interpretation, outstanding venue too.
Thanks for sharing.

+WJohnM . yes I think too.reverb is too heavy..
Precise and crisp. This is my favorite rendition.
Tchaikovsky would have been proud
Qué mejor lugar para interpretar esta joya musical: el corazón de la Rusia que todos los que aman el arte, glorifican.
Those sure are some decorative walls
I first heard this music when I was about 12. Thirteen years later I was in that room. It is one of the most spectacular places I have ever seen.
I found that site reverb more than acceptable: a plus to the superb performance
WOW that natural reverb, beautiful performance

Rafael Teles Tchaikovsky was not oppressed, have you read his letters 1200 pages? He lived a fabulous life. Thanks to baroness fon Mekk of course.

The acustics of the room are insane
Well played. Beautiful concert hall. Where is it? I wish we had some halls like this in the US!
I may be mistaken, but I think it may be the Great Hall of the Catherine Palace in St Petersburg.
Interesting. Thanks for the info!
ElizaGrey Spot on. That's exactly where it is.
Thank you all for the information!
Nice
I think I can hear someone playing behind that reverb. Anyone else?
Hello, Érico, no, there were only the musicians, you can see on the video :)
