At the beginning of the video "What were they for...?" Answer, Structural survey looking for oil contamination of the chalk behind the concrete tunnel walls. Did you notice the catchpot niches long the tunnel? There to collect oil that had seeped out of the concrete oil cells and into the chalk, and they did their job during the lifetime of the depot.
Steam driven generators? - Not a chance - you were in the pump room! Those big machines were electrically driven pumps capable of shifting 400 tons of FFO per hour (each) and developed an hydraulic pressure of 350lb/sq.in. There were two 16" diameter pipes for FFO, and one 10" pipe for diesel, connecting the depot to the docks. There were six booster pumping stations along the length of the pipeline. A section of pipeline had to be removed and "dived" under the motorway when it was built. There is a short tunnel beneath the motorway which carries the 'new' pipe section (now permanently sealed). The depot stored 135'000 tons of fuel oil and was built between 1939 and 1940. Fifteen men died during its construction, two of whom are still there to this day, encased within the concrete.

I was security back in the 90s shame you couldn't get though the pump room you would of found the loads of stairs leading to the top compound there were over 500 stairs, to the top of portsdown hill, the north ramp what you come in and left was a bit tiring at 3.00am in the morning, we used to patrol the whole lot on push bike, get to see the place again shame it been left to rot great video

There were tunnels at Crystal Palace, that were remains of the high level railway. One of them apparently goes to Croydon somewhere. As a kid, I was always too scared to walk that far into them, as they were pitch black and just seemed to go on for ever. I often wonder if they are still there.

That's an incredible place, nice video and editing. Would love to have a look round, pity it's sealed. I enjoy looking round WWII locations. I imagine that could be quite a dangerous place if someone wasn't being careful.

Not trying to give anything away but.... thanks for uploading as now I know what a mess it's turned into since my last visit. And I thought that was a messy visit xD this is unreal. How can the main water supply still be turned on and the loss of so much water in that area surely would prompt the companies to turn it off :S ?

Liam Nash I know that’s what I said, I even tried looking for the ISV to shut it off but could see anything? It’s such a waste, surly Southern Water are aware of a water loss in the area? You would think they would investigate it?

@@TheBeardedExplorer I wouldn't be suprised if they do know about it, but maybe the MOD have refused them access to fix it. Either way what a waste. Was hoping to get that amazing wide angle shot from the top platform. Such a great explore! always sticks in my mind this place.

Guys I really enjoy your work but this one scared me to death for you. The blackened area above the pump room looks like the aftermath of a oil fire. And wading around in bunker oil in that pump room terrified me for your sakes. The only reason I could keep watching is the fact that you posted it therefore were not consumed in a instant conflagration. One spark from static electric build up in your clothing and volatile outgassing concentrations up and bye bye. Please don’t push your luck like that again. I’m sure one of the reasons they sealed it to stop someone from blowing it up for fun. Also I’m not sure, I’ve never heard a beep or y’all mentioning it but you really should invest in an atmosphere analysis unit for these closed spaces you put yourselves in. Sewers can kill you with bad air as can fuel depots or just long sealed underground spaces can have bad air, flammability issues, contamination of chemicals (here in the US they encounter byproducts of methamphetamine manufacture in the sewers in city’s that are deadly) be careful.
