Inside Japan’s Only All-Female Sushi House

  • In Japanese society, women are not traditionally trained to become sushi masters. Myths persist that women’s hands are too warm for raw fish, their makeup will block their sense of smell and their menstrual cycles affect their sense of taste. Nadeshiko Sushi is challenging all of that with Japan’s first and only all-female sushi restaurant in Tokyo. There, seven women prove it doesn’t take a man to make a mean sushi plate.

    Funny thing is as an Asian who has been eating a lot of sushi for decades, I've never actually seen a female sushi chefs before. I never realized it until watching this vid. Certainly interesting perspective.

      It's shocking the kind of things we don't notice until it's pointed out to us. There's a lot we just take for granted. So when every sushi chef we see is male, it doesn't really register until someone points out how rare a female sushi chef is.

    Don't understand the amount of dislikes the video received. Keep in mind this takes place in Japan, where women are sometimes looked down way more often than the U.S. Nice to see changes in Japan.

      I guess because men were seen as the working horses for their family while the women were seen as the caretakers for their family.
      (I am sure someone will be offended by the way I wrote that so let's put it so all tumblr doesn't get up in my grill).
      Men were seen as providers of economical support for their family while women were seen as providers of affectionate support for their family.
      But since in a few decades back, women wanted to be able to join in the economical support department too, which is the norm of today's world.

    A lot of you are all trying to compare this restaurant to western standards, saying it's a double standard or perpetuating some stereotype. In case you didn't know, Japan is still very much more conservative than countries in the west, so the idea of women pushing the gender roles in Japan is a very big deal there.

    I think it's a good cause for trying to combat the current gender orientations of Japan.
    I do hope that they find more people who are willing to set aside the notion that only men can be professional sushi chefs and maybe partner with professional sushi chefs willing to help them become better at the art of making sushi.

    AS AN ASIAN WOMAN, Shout out to this inspiring mind! Admire her bravery and perspective! She is trying not to be so "female dominates", clearly she puts a lot of effort into remaining unbiased and just plain pro-women! KEEP IN MIND THAT IN ASIA this tradition of advocating other women in reality is still not so popular especially among women themselves! So this is more than innovative, it's revolutionary! And consider the obstacles and risks of opening a restaurant like that! She's a true warrior.

    Many people said that this restaurant is just sexism fighting sexism. I dont think thats true. They are pretty much the only sushi restaurant with only female members compared to all the other male lead ones and the people there try to show the world that they can make sushi too. If they would hire a male chef what would that accomplish? Oh yeah people would line up in front that guy again, making it impossible for them to achieve their goal. If people were to realize that they can cook just as good as men then they can think about hiring male staff. Women dont want to push themself over men, they just want to show that they are there too, with the same skills and dreams. And if this restaurant gets to that point, then hey, male staff be welcomed.

    • @KonataTanaka
      @KonataTanaka 7 років тому +22

      Mrtheunnameable in most first world countries, it isnt about rights, its about morality. yes, on paper women and men can both vote, get jobs, go to college, etc, but women are still treated poorly by society's warped view of what they should and shouldnt do. for instance, no one would bat an eye at an all male sushi shop, but an all female ANYTHING earns it the title of being the "first and only" of something. the reason for that is because men, as stated in the video, believe women to be eyecandy, or inadequate for jobs they have. which is bs

      I don't see anything sexist here. She's trying to prove something, and that is women sushi chef exist. After that point is proven and acknowledged, she might do the normal stuffs after that.
      Anyone of you saying this restaurant is sexist, prove me this; have you ever seen a female professional sushi chef in your whole life? If so, can you count it by more than your fingers?

    • @sicthejake2400
      @sicthejake2400 7 років тому +1

      By definition, the restaurant operates in a sexist way. I'm sure all of the chefs there are skilled, but if a male chef who was better than all of them came in, then he would be rejected. That's sexism. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but there's no arguing that point.
      "Anyone of you saying this restaurant is sexist, prove me this; have you ever seen a female professional sushi chef in your whole life? If so, can you count it by more than your fingers?"
      -I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. How does proving the existence of professional female sushi chefs prove that this restaurant isn't sexist? They're two completely different things. I don't know much about the sushi industry, but looking at the data, there's a good chance sexism is involved. That has nothing to do with this restaurant having a sexist policy, which is an undeniable fact.

      It's not sexist when they are trying to provide opportunities for women to learn how to make amazing sushi. Men have much more opportunities in Japan to learn how to make proper sushi as compared to women. So it is not sexist but fighting for equality.

      George A. Well... Its kinda sexist if everyone start to do the same... But i guess if they are the only and first, maybe it can then open the door to mix ones, also they should make it mix soon too. Completly closing the door to one of the sex is simply sexist whatever is the sex. Not saying women shouldnt make sushi, but closing the door to men is just as wrong

Just to flip the roles a little but not exclude one gender entirely they put the men in the job the women are usually doing. If someone is very desperate for work then they will do it. There you go. Both included but the women can get what they want and they do well according to your other comment. Btw I don't think you are using the word niche quite properly. 私、女性です。女寿司職人応援してあげたいけど、髪の毛のしまつだけはどうにかして欲しい。ピアスも髪飾りも衣装も可愛い。でも、食欲わきません。
