I know a lot of people might have a preference in this question, but I love JRPGs and Western RPGs equally. I've always been into both of them since I discovered RPGs and many games from both of those categories would be in a list of my favorite games of all time.
I'd never heard of people wanting less freedom until these video responses, but that's what makes these interesting! Do you feel like freedom in WRPGs unnecessarily makes the games take longer?
You made this video because you knew that if you posted the original video, Teddy and Alex would make you drink Mountain Dew again for going over the 3 minute mark.
Western RPG's are clearly better - just two points prove this. In terms of graphics and mechanics let us say they are about equal, but 1) writing/storywise and 2) world wise JRPG's are inferior. Most JRPG's are written for an adolescent audience while good Western RPG's try to explore more complex/adult narratives that require more maturity and intelligence to understand/appreciate. World wise, JRPG's have a navigation world and a flat "combat" world. This is what really makes JRPGS shit, because this breaks immersion and forces ALL encounters to be set pieces. Combat becomes very predictable/formulaic, and you cannot use the world as a tactical tool since it is always "flat"/arenalike for your party and the enemies to engage in combat. Just take Witcher 3, Baldur's gate 3 and fallout new vegas and they wipe the floor with all of the look-a-like, cookie cutter JRPG's.
It's almost like jrpg fans don't even like rpg genre itself. They're either autists that like to farm the same one encounter for hours to get better combat numbers, or unironic weebs that get mental hard-on for anything anime-like.
I prefer jrpg, because they have better story, while western rpg is just like beat the f out of everything inside a dungeon, and if the developers have enough time they create a story to justify the beat the f of everything.
JRPGs, easily.
