  • Today I thought I'd revisit an old favourite - Adventure Time - and analyse the way one episode explores ideas like imagination and silliness. This develops into a reading of the episode in which
Adventure Time's treatment of these elements develops into an implicit defence of the show itself, as well as its wider genre.

Adventure Time is an American fantasy animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. The series follows the adventures of a boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (John DiMaggio)-a dog with the magical power to change size and shape at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), the Ice King (Tom Kenny), Marceline (Olivia Olson), BMO (Niki Yang), and others.

I never liked Adventure Time cuz I grew up with it, liked the art style, or had good humor. My main reason I LOVED this show is because, the world and stories of this show was like a way of an escape from the real world for me. A truly magical show, especially with the soundtrack. Sometimes I felt like I was having a lucid dream while watching this show and it felt wonderful.

Thanks to its creativity, Adventure Time's popularity has lasted years after its final episode and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

I feel like crazy ex girlfriend did this kind of thing well too but it’s mostly in the background but the main character every episode comes up with a song in her head that helps her work through her problems but she normally doesn’t acknowledge how helpful it is until the very end where she decides to make them real so they can help others

Sort of tangential to your thesis here so I see why it wasn't mentioned, but this episode has another important message about the value of imagination and of adventure time itself, in what Finn finds when he enters his imagination. The way his aversion to imagination turns out to have been a reflection not just of dedication to reality as he claimed, but of a fear of what dainty things he might find there, reflects a very real insecurity often present in the people who denigrate shows like Adventure Time and the medium of animation as a whole as not real art. And the way he first has to face this daintier part of his nature to manifest imagined constructs more reflective of the masculine traits he wants to embody, while it's kind of played for laughs, does seem to be an important step in the change of heart he has by the end of the episode, and maybe a message to those anti-imagination cynics out in the real world.

I've been behind on the show right before it became the cultural phenomenon it is now and I don't even remember why. Maybe it wasn't my speed or something. But I'm only just starting on Season 3 and I've seen from Nicktendo's retrospective that it suffered from seasonal rot sometime in Season 6? There's another cartoon made from Frederator Studios called Chalkzone. And there are surprisingly a lot of similarities between both shows. And as much as I love both shows, Adventure Time has funnier jokes and doesn't just focus on the lead characters. And Chalkzone would've been more story-driven like AT if Nickelodeon didn't cut it so short.

The whole imagination thing actually goes way deeper in this universe

An episode where the characters imagine their way through scenarios while waiting for reality to kick in.

Sadly...we're currently stuck in a media age plagued by reboots, remakes, "baby versions" (aka preschool versions) of iconic properties and superhero media that uses WAAAAAAAY too many special effects and provides very little in terms of acting prowess.

Adventure Time was quite a rather breath of fresh air in Cartoon Network's rather current dark age airing a lot of crap nowadays it's not as good as Regular Show I'd say but it had its own charm at least for the first few seasons or so as I'm not afraid to admit that the show did go through quite a bit of seasonal rot in the later half and the finale itself was just disappointing and quite haphazardly put together it kinda left me wanting more instead of an actual proper finale......
