Damien Chazelle's screenplays (mainly Whiplash and La La Land) are also really interesting. He describes what is going through the characters minds, something that we can't see, and it makes so much more enjoyable.
Example, an action line from Whiplash:
"Andrew smiles. Nods. Finally -- unlike his uncles, his cousins,
even his father -- someone who gets it."
I love to read screenplays and think: "Oh yes, this is a Damien Chazelle/Quentin Tarantino/Aaron Sorkin screenplay alright".
Personally, I think writers should be free to leave their marks on screenplay, however they so desire.
but i get the opinion of a producer and or director of: how am i supposed to film that if its only in his mind?....i guess you could start to do that once you make a name for yourself

Thanks for another upload! I just got hired to write a pitch and a few test scenes for an animated feature and if they like it, I they’ll bring me on to write the full screenplay. I don’t have a software. I just use Google docs for now I’m young so I just do it for my personal enjoyment but this one trying I’m doing could be a series when I get older. Definitely gonna work on everything I learned from you in the second episode tomorrow

great video however i was kinda hoping you’d talk about when to use dual dialogue. i generally try to only use it when characters are speaking over eachother or there are multiple conversations happening within the same room ex: Good Time or Uncut Gems.

Hey Tyler, when are you gonna do more live scripts reading sessions? And also, is it wise to compress long action scenes is to small burst of actions or just uses actions that are relevant to the plot, while being descriptive enough to paint a picture?
I love ur content, been watching some of your videos to help me with my screenplay. I am also new to this thing and i wondered, since i was never going to a film school and i got no connection at all related to film producer, director etc. How can i make my script to be featured in a film ?

have you done a video about story pacing?
I thought about whether to put character thoughts in the action lines or not. Currently, I decided to do it, so the director and actor have clues to what to show. I want them to have the freedom to express how to represent that, therefore I don't express it in more specific guidance. Does that make sense? Can that work out?
E.g. I write "Character is surprised and thinks about their next move". By not being more specific, the director can choose to tell the actor to express the thought in a close-up with wrinkles on their forehead, or simply by extending the previous shot and drawing it out without movement or action. And I personally really don't have a preference, as long as everything fits together in the end.
I need a sample of how to format a tv news inside a film, like something the characters are watching but it has to be pre shot or described for the characters in the tv news. (do I explain myself well?)
i wrote a long script on studiobinder and in the end the webpage, cuz its a webpage, started to lag/drag...i guess free has its drawbacks...works well for a short film script

Hello @TylerMowery, I would like to ask you if it does some difference when you use standard formatting with 60 characters per line or modern formatting with 61 characters per line...? Lastly, I realized that Americans use the letter format which is a little smaller than the European A4 format, precisely smaller about four lines, so I rather ask about both things... does the rule of one page equal to one minute apply in all those cases? Thank you for your videos. :)

Ok, I have a question. How do decide which word do you have to capitalize jn the action-line? I've seen a lot of this, but just haven't been able to get it. Thanks!
- First time a character is introduced
- First time a special prop is introduced (so that it stands out when departments are going through the script)
- Other special things to be noted like important audio cues, transitions, maybe a specific set piece
- Basically any detail that is important to the story. If it almost acts as a "character" it's own way, then it's probably best to capitalize it when it's first introduced.
Mainly it’s up to you. Many writers do it for simple emphasis

I submitted my screenplay to a competition (a Feature) and was told that Features don't break Acts, only TV scripts do? Does that mean - not at all- or, you don't end the Act, but do note the beginning of a new act?
If you plan on getting better writing screenplays but haven't written a full story from beginning to end should you focus on completing a story and not focus too much on format or learn more about format and write after you have all the information you need?

Am I correct in assuming people who break the formatting rules and get their scripts accepted are established writers who have earned the right to bend rules?

The thing with A quiet place's script is that is not a finish product, it seems like the writter tried to put style on a medium that is preferable to be practical. The public won't be reading the script unless is a new mainstream media of entertainment, like reading a novel, which it isn't yet. Pictures like the height of the windmill could be simplify in a sentence. I could give in with the fonts if it's really necessary but it could fall short (again) with another description. For example: If a man is reading a a sign in a wall written in blood, that implies the type of font that has to have. I don't know if there are professional norms that a script has to follow like the minimum lenght of a script, so maybe in a script with light dialogue they couldn't reach the minimum lenght in order to pass certains requirements before production. Again, i don't know.
