I Will Derive!

- I parody of "I Will Survive" that I did with a couple of my friends for our Calculus and Physics classes.
Lyrics:
At first I was afraid, what could the answer be?
It said given this position find velocity.
So I tried to work it out, but I knew that I was wrong.
I struggled; I cried, "A problem shouldn't take this long!"
I tried to think, control my nerve.
It's evident that speed's tangential to that time-position curve.
This problem would be mine if I just knew that tangent line.
But what to do? Show me a sign!
So I thought back to Calculus.
Way back to Newton and to Leibniz,
And to problems just like this.
And just like that when I had given up all hope,
I said nope, there's just one way to find that slope.
And so now I, I will derive.
Find the derivative of x position with respect to time.
It's as easy as can be, just have to take dx/dt.
I will derive, I will derive. Hey, hey!
And then I went ahead to the second part.
But as I looked at it I wasn't sure quite how to start.
It was asking for the time at which velocity
Was at a maximum, and I was thinking "Woe is me."
But then I thought, this much I know.
I've gotta find acceleration, set it equal to zero.
Now if I only knew what the function was for a.
I guess I'm gonna have to solve for it someway.
So I thought back to Calculus.
Way back to Newton and to Leibniz,
And to problems just like this.
And just like that when I had given up all hope,
I said nope, there's just one way to find that slope.
And so now I, I will derive.
Find the derivative of velocity with respect to time.
It's as easy as can be, just have to take dv/dt.
I will derive, I will derive.
I will derive, I will derive, I will derive!
The integral song is this song played backwards.

Lmao
clever xD

I am just a constant, nobody loves me.
He is just a constant, might as well call him C!
Just don't drink and derive.
Well , guess that's the funniest think I have sawn on the internet , might Aswell quit it here
tsg1zzn it is differentiate, not derive
It's still correct, he is deriving the answer using differentiation

How did you guys integrate all those math references into one song? I thought there was a limit.
Well, it just converged all together. It's sad that there is no series to this.
The amount of maths references to the amount of lines in the song are very similar, resulting in a very small common ratio. So no matter how far you push the limit, the amount of sequels to the series always converges back to 0.
It was a series of derivative epiphanies.
Fuck this, im not old enough
I guess the function converges, so there is no limit :)
its ridiculous how well this video stands up to time. it could have been made today in a faux retro style. beautiful. art.
This is faux retro style even for 2008

Just like Calculus, video stands up to time. This is pretty normal, lol.
That guy with orange polo is so calculus.

Oh god%
I should be studying for the AP exam but im watching this fucking video again
+The Jiggy Llama good luck bro
The Jiggy Llama literally me right now
Same!!!!
Hey....me too!
which is why I am going to do the entire Khan Academy calc course before I take AP calc BC next year.
This will forever permanently hold a spot in my head
@@Asterism_Desmos EXACTLY
I hope it doesn't this song will be a good way for me to remember what to do in my A levels
the class next door was listening to this loudly during our calculus exam.
I hope you guys got the full 100% plus bonus marks for this assignment, because WOW. The effort shows :)
Every calculus student needs to watch this. Thanks to my calc professor for ahowing us this!
now is the moment, 5 years later, when I realize I can finally watch this and actually understand it... and bask in its full glory.
It's that time of year now, folks. Time to watch this instead of studying for the AP exam.
And this is how my class lost all their sanity points.
Noice number
2021, I remember I found this video in 2014, when I was facing a hard time with Calculus at my degree in Engineering. At first it was funny, but as I watched for the 7th time (I do procrastinate a little), I realized it was telling me exactly what I needed to learn. I remembered the song at my exams aand didn't passed, obviously, there were plenty more than limits, derivatives and integral. But at least I smiled.
7 years later, I'm still here guys, hope you're all having an awesome career and life.
When you realize it's all ogre tomorrow so the best you can do is memorize this song
amen
Ogre
It's never ogre
12 am. And my professor sent me an email about this.
love this. I abandoned mathematics for law, and have now concluded that mathematics was more pure and beautiful, but law is more fun. and crazy.
Why :(
How'd they dance on a calculator bruh
ikr wtf
Especially since this was back in 2008
You could just convert images frame by frame to monochromatic bitmaps but I'm assuming they used a more efficient method than that; perhaps a filter.
Looks good though.
Can't they just make video with dancing, make it looks like on the calculator and than use video montage?
@@artemkorotenko666 this* was like 13 years ago lol
It was probably so hard to edit a video like this back in 2008!?? wow
16 years later and this song is still amazing. I'm using this as background music while I study. It's crazy to think this video was uploaded 2 months after I was born!
inspirational. my ap calc teacher showed us this.
I just want to know what great things these two guy's went on to do.
From another comment: "I was their calculus teacher. The one with the curly hair went to the University of Oklahoma and went on to Carnegie Mellon and got his masters. He could have went anywhere he wanted and majored in anything he wanted, but his love was film and I believe that is what he majored in. The other young man went to the University of Arkansas and got his degree in Electrical Engineering, and he is now a proud dad. The girl that made a cameo in now an instructor at Northeastern State University. All were fantastic students and great kids."
derive, obviously...
This will always be a classic.
Boy how has time passed... I was barely 2 years old when this came out, and now I'm in the same position XD
There are no words for how awesome this song is.
Orange shirt guy definitely took an Advanced Dance Moves class
Its been 3 years since ive done calculus and im still listening to this banger
can't wait till I finish calculus 2 and never have to take tests on it again. College and School, without tests and stress, is actually pretty cool mostly.
I am especially appreciative of the large CRT TV on the rolling metal cart in the background, and the VCR on the shelf below. 😎
How am I only finding this 14 years after the fact
I like how the guy in the front is very worried while the guy in the back is just dancing to a beat.
When you're taking a calculus class, a film class, and a music production class.
This guys teacher who made a small cameo is currently teaching me and my class ap calculus, and he showed us this video. Shoutout to ossm.
This is the single greatest thing I have EVER come across!!!
This video was 12 years ahead of its time
The algorithm gods have brought me a 14 year old video, I accept their gift.
I watched this video for the first time when I was still at high school, it's been like 10 years, now I'm thinking of showing this to my math students!
Damn, this is GOLD. Thanks, Mr. Algorithm.
dx/dt is one of the most well known functions.
I wish I could like this more than once
I listen to this song to pump me up before exams! You guys are getting me through my Engineering degree
Bravo. A masterpiece. Or should I say mathsterpiece? Loved the guy with the fro dancing in the back!
I remember watching this in my AP Calc BC class in high school 5 years ago. What a throw back. You guys are awesome
back when youtube videos actually had content
This was genuinely inspiring. THANK YOU.
That guy at the back just dancing!
My new favorite UA-cam video... How am I just now discovering this?
This is so good.
This song (and the guy who suddenly started dancing in the background) were hilarious... Everybody in the video thought that those two were insane....Somebody in my Calc class told me about this before a test on optimization and curve sketching...Its the hilarious Differential Calculus Bible in song form--Loved it
.
I wonder what both of them are doing today like with uni, and what there profession is.
Hopefully maths teachers 😂
This was amazing, and changed my life. I wish I could have done this or been a part of something this big, somehow, in my life. Thank you for this.
"If Sheldon and Leonard went to the same school at the same time."
This song is roughly a year younger than me and my friends, and we used this ancient fossil to help us in our calculus test lol
Pretty funny. Back to doing chain rule now. :-(
"It's evident that speed's tangential to that time-position curve"
Technically, speed's tangential to that time-distance curve, but who's counting. It's still funny.
Or it should be velocity instead of speed
But what if the particle exists in a 1-dimensional universe? Then position and distance are basically the same thing
@@overlordsmashalot3891 Not if you're going back and forth

this is the single best video i have ever watched.
This is my math class's theme song.
We watched this video as a 'treat' before exams! Gave our maths class a great laugh! This is just so damn brilliant! Really well done! The lyrics are perfect! =D
funny song but isn't he cheating on the test
I have heard students are often allowed to use calculus in tests.
pRahvi0 note the presence of the textbook lol. That said, I think it's a problem sheet, not a test. Not enough people in the room for it to be examined.
@@pRahvi0
They'll give us a sheet of integrations formulas that nobody considers important to remember
At least that's something
The guy in the background is the perfect representation of my brain cells during every single math exam
Yes, yes, yes! More please!
Oh, man - this reminds me of my first physics-test. I felt so lost. (Especially since the questions were in secondary norwegian - noes!) Great video - love the dancing! :'D

This was so ahead of its time
Our AP Calc teacher sent this to us today on our last day of school. We've had her for all 4 years of high school and we all cried.
3:08 Gangnam style before it was popular
yo this vid is really hella well made so props to you and hella nice and ya!!! hella job. hella.
this song lives rent free in my head
Saw this as a kid and thought it was funny. Now seeing it before I fail the class a second time I’m crying 😩
I am in PRIME shape for the calculus test after watching this...hehe...:)
How gullible I was back then to think that Calculus was the most difficult class I've encountered. Then came Assembly Language. I wish back for Calculus now.
Honestly got goosebumps from this
I didn't actually comment on this video... so here I go. This video is one of the best videos ever compiled and edited. You guys have great talent. I hope you guys make another video! Maybe integrals? =P

That was awesome! It puts modern shitposts to shame
imagine these guys showing this to their kids in 30 years.
That is incredible! Such a brilliant song, i'm amazed how you actually got the lyrics to work with the music.
We watched this video in my maths class HAHAHA
Julia K same before the Christmas break because it would be too boring and too basic to watch Christmas movies 😂
Alyssa Alcantara hahahaha I think we watched this like a week before Christmas break
I'm so showing this to my Calc teacher !!!!!
The question doesn't make sense. First
x(t) = -3x^3+27x^2+8x+10
if x is the function then you can't just repeat x without mentioning the argument.
Assuming every x is x(t) makes it a completely different story however.
x(t) = -3 x(t)^3 + 27 x(t)^2 + 8 x(t) + 10
x'(t) = ?
Now that's a tricky question IMO.
Though if he meant x(t) = -3 t^3 + 27 t^2 + 8t + 10
then x'(t) is super easy, so easy I won't write it.
How does dis not have more than 2.2 milliln views this is the type of shit that should pop up in recomended
I was just pointing out that math gets even harder (a lot harder) than multivariable.
I'm actually in college and I finished multivariable calculus last quarter (continuing with more math now). I didn't feel it was too hard, as it's mostly an extension of the same ideas used in differential and integral calculus. I also had a good professor, which helped a lot.
I'm not majoring in chemistry (not math) but I agree that knowing math is worth the effort. You're right. you never start fresh :(
2019 anyone? First heard this in my calculus class (my teacher played this). I kept coming back :D
I found this video a couple of years ago while I was taking Algebra 2. Back then, I just watched and laughed at how nerdy it is. But now that I'm taking Calculus, I ACTUALLY GET IT. AND IT"S AWESOME. XD
Yeah MIDI song files! Ah the past.
This year I WILL DERIVE! XD
this song actually makes me pumped to do some calculus for fun
WE GETTING OUT OF CLASS WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song... this song is the holy grail of math. Aced me in calculus XD and keeps pumping me through the rest of the maths XD. And yes, this is what goes through one's mind after 1 hour in the test.
so my whole time studying calculus is to laugh at this video without knowing half of it...
my integral is crumbling
This song will permanently live rent free in my brain. I remember my brother played it for me and our mom when we were lost in Tennessee. Even though my mom was stressed, she found the song laughed and called it "doopy," a word we used for silly things. I was too young to know what derivatives were, but it still made me happy to listen and see everyone laughing. Even though this channel has long since been dead, I am thankful for the good memory this song gave me. Thank you for making this parody.
Oh wow, my dad uses the word doopy to describe silly things too.
just gotten onto a whole new part of youtube i never knew existed....
Wow. Great lyrics. Very creative. We just released a math parody called "a little math ditty" set to jack and Diane. Kudos
I haven't listened this song for more than 3 years. Today I saw it, and I laughed so hard! Man, this video is super funny! hauhauhauhauhauhuahuahuhaa
A physisist AND a singer! Whoa.
Anyhow, I really like it. (Y)
This video is in a sense, like a modern day Schoolhouse Rock!
I’ve never taken Calculus, and I don’t plan on ever taking it (going into my senior year of hs now), but I still come back to this and re-watch it every once in a while. A true classic.
well? did you end up taking it?
@@kylewaddle7592 I’m entering my senior year of college now, and somehow ended up falling into a Cell and Molecular Bio major. So yes, unfortunately - I had to take calc I and II :’)
