I’ve been drinking CDPs for about 12-13 years, the GSM is my favorite blend style, and have recently started getting into the Gigondas and also Vacqueyras apps, I like the more earthy, rustic notes they offer
They are distinctive wines for sure!
Great video! Southern Rhône wines are my daily drinkers, and I love Chateauneuf du Pape! It’s actually unusual for me to experience a Rhône wine I don’t like. Everything from simple Côtes du Rhône to pricey CdP and everything in between! The combination of fruity, earthy and spicy just make them the perfect wines for my palate.
It is a distinctive flavor profile indeed
Finding out about the Southern Rhone wines has made my life so much better. Chateauneuf du Pape has the better wines, at least for me, but the Cotes du Rhone Villages denomination delivers some of the best values I get for old world wines. Chateau La Nerthe's CDR Villages 2018 is my favorite french wine ever. I'm saving their 2016 CDP for a special ocasion.
Not only the Southern Rhone wines are consistently good, but I love Rhone Blends from all over the world, specially Spain.
Great tasting. Hope one day you can compare Rhone Blends from different places, like France, Spain, Australia, USA and Chile (Errazuriz has a delicious GSM). That's my dream tasting.
Very good taste! GSM blends are distinctive indeed. You'll be happy to hear there is a big Grenache tasting with wines from all over the world coming up on the channel.
2018 was an excellent year for la nerthe, the 2018 cuvee des cadettes is one of the best wines I've ever tasted
Love your videos, as a wine enthusiast! Added bonus of you adding my favorite singer in one of them 😂
David Craig???
@@drmatthewhorkey Yup, Craig David ;-)
Great video. You nailed it! I had both wines in the past several times and happy to have them in the cellar. La Reine Des Bois from Mordorée is a tier 1 Chateauneuf at 50/60 Euro. Had a 2001 with a friend some time ago and it was sublime. The 2020 you tasted is, in my opinion, easier and already more drinkable then previous millésimes. Les Hauts de Montmirail, your pronounciation is very good, from Brusset is indeed also a top Gigondas. The 2019 in my cellar at 27 Euro/bottle. When I hear the US prices....wow. 1+ point difference between both wines....but not in their price. Of course both have their own charm. A waiting your next video!
You are right, they both have their own charm. A lot coming up on the Rhone.
I learn so much from you, Dr. Matt, I feel like I should be paying tuition. I had no clue that white was allowed in the blend. It reminded me of when so many producers in Chanti also had white wine in the blend.
Wow thanks so so much! Yes there are several appellations in the Rhône that allow white grapes to be blended in
I usually like how enjoyable the entry-level for these wines are haha! I can get good Gigondas for $25 and CDP for $35, but I'm sure the higher producers really kick it up! I have recently gotten a couple Northern Rhones like Durand and Crozes-Hermitage, those have been quality as well and fresh :) Great video idea ^_^
Nice, Crozes Hermitage offers great value for money.
I was able to get a costco Vacqueyras for $11. unbelivable deal IMO and their costco Chateauneuf du pape was also great @ $19
Niceeee 💪🏼
Great video, Matt. How do you rate Vacqueyras against Gigondas? Anyway, got to put you on notice, I got a Coq Volant 2020 right next to me. We'll learn soon If your scoring and tasting notes were on point. 😁
You'll see an upcoming Southern Rhône Cru video coming soon!
As an example here is JLL's review of the Gigondas you tasted. Great commentary, as always. He gave it 4.5 stars, on his 6 star system. Dark red; the bouquet is a tight bundle of dark berry fruit, has a prune, raspberry jam aroma, a firm heart, plenty of variety to come through. The palate is rich and well packed, carries depth, certainty, gathers into a resounding, sustained finale, the fruit clear and lively in those moments, has worked its way through well. It’s a stimulating Gigondas with crisp, rocky spark in its tannins, a hint of late power. 14.5°. 12,000 b. 50% Gren, 30% Syr, 20% Mourv. €27 at the domaine. From 2025, decant. 2047-49 Nov 2021
🙏🔥
Hard to go wrong on CDR. As someone who works on the retail side of things. CdP is more recognized by most customers, at least in my area. I've had some good Gigondas, but for me it's a harder sell because it's not as well known. But as prices go up I think eventually more people will find out about it. But I've also looked to some of the other areas for some deals. I've managed to get some nice wines just south of Gigondas in Beaumes-de-Venise. It's not as well known and I can buy a bit in bulk and get some really good prices. Beaumes-de-Venise wines have been pretty good sellers in the shop for me. One day I hope you can cover some of the CDR region.
You are right on CdR... Incredible QPR
I do like C9dP quite a lot, but on the other side of the river, there's another AOC which isn't that well known commercially, but produces some terrific wines: Lirac.
I love Lirac and you'll see some coming up in videos soon.
I don't think we can really go wrong with a GSM blend. There is real hope for Napa if the weather just keeps getting hotter. If it does get too hot, drop the Syrah from the blend as some of the younger guys in the southern Rhone have talked about.
Yes, less and less Syrah is being used but there are other grape varieties that will tolerate the heat a bit better.
Gigondas is going up. Try some of the other and lesser known AOC wines of the CdR and you will find some amazing bargains: Cairanne, Lirac and Rasteau are all good bets. Even some of the CdR 'Village' can really deliver bang for your bucks.
Big fan of CdR and a lot of crus from the Southern Rhone
I love Brusset, fantastic producer. Had their Cairanne recently, such a refined, great wine (kinda cheap, too)...
You’ll like the blind tasting video on Sunday…
@@drmatthewhorkey and I did :)
I love Rhône wines, both north and south, CDP being my favorite, how about tasting some Vacqueyras vs CDP.
You’ll see a southern rhone cru video soon
I started drinking a lot of CdP and Gigondas starting around 10 years ago. Initially I preferred CdPs, but lately I think Gigondas wines are more complex and deliver better drinking over time. What do you think?
Just my opinion, but the top CdPs are very tough to beat
Rhône is a favorite region in France for me. Côtes du Rhône is a little confusing knowing that it can come from the northern Rhône and some can be 100% Syrah and that WSET categorizes it as a southern Rhône wine.
Good taste! Yes that can be confusing at times, it's important to ask where the CdR comes from for clarification.
I like beaumes de venise. One of my favorite whites is a declassified dry beaumes de venise white made by saint amant
Niccce, do you like the sweet wines from BdV too?
@@drmatthewhorkey I still haven't tried one! Any producers to look out for?
that biodynamic chateauneuf sounds amazing!
and it is!
Good video. CDP (less acclaimed wine makers) and great Gigondas are some of the best wine values out there. If you are really into them, I highly recommend subscribing to Drink Rhone. Jonathan Learmonth is a wine critic who does only Rhone. Amazing specificity.
Niceee!! Haven’t heard of him but I’m often traveling to the Rhône
If I'm not wrong, gigondas appellation actually allow producer to bttl grenache up to 100% n not 80%
That is CdP not Gigondas
www.xaviervignon.com/en/gamme/terroirs-dexception/gigondas
If I'm not wrong, the "planting" of grenache in the vineyard cannot exceed 80% for Gigondas AOC but no regulation of not allow producers to use more than 80% grenache
Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas le Poste 2019 seems to me is 100% grenache
Tbh I find both to be a bit too heavy and too hot generally. Many CdP these days exceed 15 abv and for me thats too much, the sweetness sticks in my mouth and leaves a headache in the morning. Though these wines obviously have a lot going for them too, Id rather buy other wines for that kind of money. That said I do buy some Gigondas at times as you still can get good bottlings for less than 20 USD here.
Ahhh that is a great price point. Are you in France?
@@drmatthewhorkey Nah Sweden, not a country you’d think of as cheap on alcohol, but premium wines are in fact often pretty well priced. The state has a monopoly on alcohol retail here making Sweden the single biggest buyer of wine in Europe giving them serious negotiation power. And while cheap table wine isn’t so cheap because of high taxes, more premium bottlings (bought in massive quantities) are not marked up as high as they would be in a private enterprise.
It’s Châteauneuf, not Châtneuf. The eau is not silent.
👍🏼
I love rhône wines, it's my region but to be honest I've never been a fan of Gigondas at all.
Ahhhh why not?
@@drmatthewhorkey I think it's because most of the Gigondas I've had I've felt they were too tannic for me. I don't mind tannins in wine but it's always tasted to me that they were "over doing" it. It might be a south rhône thing though. I enjoy more balanced reds from northern rhône like Cornas and Saint Joseph (my absolute favorite wines).
its crazy because domaine brusset has many varietals and is a decent winery but ive had much better gigondas than brusset . CdP ages better, has more minerality, and definitely a more complex wine so CdP WINS.
:o
Stop tensing your face up.
Ok
I love. Chateauneuf du pape. It my favorite wine region. Gigondas is great too. It's a shame though the prices have risen dramatically. Some years back you could by great wines like Pegau. Vieux telegraph. Bois de boursan Felix. Vieux Don Jon. Morodree. Janasse Close des pape and many more at extremely reasonable prices for the quality. I bought a lot directly at the domains. Every year I got a letter from. Morodree allowing me to buy 12 bottles of Morodree. At that time the price was around 35$. Quite a lot more expensive now.
Prices keep rising! Wow, that is a helluva price... I'm jealous
Morodree reine des bois Chateauneuf du it was. Awesome wine.
Awesome wine indeed
