It's Ukrainian gas anyway. Russia primarily invaded Crimea and later whole Ukraine in order to prevent Europe from benefiting from Ukraine's natural resources which would mean disaster for Russia's economy if Ukraine was ever to replace it as Europe's main energy supplier. Another reason was they Kremlin wanted to keep Crimean naval base. It's kind of irony also justice that Russia's actions led to them not being to use the naval base and their energy exports to Europe plummeted as well.

Bottom line is Russia recognized Ukrainian sovereignty over Crimea in 1991 independence declaration and again in 2003 border treaty between both countries.
Ukraine doesn't have remotely the reserves Russia has on its territory. And by the time this war is finished, in 5-10 years maybe, there's not going to be much demand for fossil fuel anyway.
