    This is footage from an awesome day of kayak catfishing. I was drifting on the Tennessee River with cut skipjack suspended. It had been a pretty slow day and I missed two big fish. My luck changed when I hooked into a monster flathead. It was a fun fight and a heck of a battle in the kayak.

      Never had much luck with circle hooks myself. though im not very patient when the biting starts. Im crawling out of my skin to set the hook. Probably why I don't catch many fish lol. Great video and awesome fishin.

      Still, a 50 on 5 is almost unbelievable, but doable in open water with no structure or weeds for the fish to swim into, and if the hook set outside of the mouth so that the thin line isn't frayed and broken by the teeth.

      @@wickedoutdooradventures6694 we fished the inlet in the spring. We'd tie on a heavy weigh on the end than come up 8"-12" and tie on a big hook and use a bluegill for bait. We were fishing off the bank and holding the rod straight out and let the weight go straight down to bottom. It was fast water coming from an irrigation ditch. If you go on Earth you can see where it was. It's in the north east end of the lake. There's a big concrete tank that breaks up the flow and prevents erosion, usually its under water and can't be seen. If I remember right they open the canal in May and flatheads get good during may- June. Been almost 30 years since I fished there. There's something like 105 steps from the parking lot down to the canal! And they are 1/2 steps, awkward to walk. I think the lake has been really low for the last couple years.

    I fish at the local Country Club golf course, "members only" but im not a member. One full moon night in July i snuck into the golf course and took 2 poles, and a tub of chicken liver, no lights, no sinkers, just a wad of liver and a number 6 size hook. As soon as my 1st poles got into the water, i seen huge catfish fins swimming around my liver like sharks!! And i hooked up instantly and got my line broke!!! 40lb mono, brand new. I retied and kept fishing, caught 3 huge channel cats, biggest one was 14lb. And one huge flathead, 44lbs. All released. I went back several times and never could get em to bite. U are absolutely rite about releasing the big fish. Ppl always catch a 50lber and take it home to clean it. The paylakes have cleaned out my stretch of The Ohio River that i fish. Used to be able to get on a couple 25 to 30lbers easliy. Now u can fish it all day and catch one 5lb blue. Theyre destroying the river.

    So when you set your rods on the corners, how much feet of line are you letting down? It’d make sense if you have short lines sitting straight down, because otherwise it looks like you would constantly cross lines as you spin, especially if the weight is dragging on the bottom.

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  5 років тому

      I keep my baits elevated 1-3 feet off the bottom. This allows the kayak to get spun in any direction without everything getting tangled.

    Man, I miss going catfishing. Haven't been since I moved out of Alabama ten years ago. Used to go down to the Alabama river with some buddies and fish nights below the Claiborne Lock and Dam. Lots of nice cats caught out of that stretch of water. I've heard tales of 50+ pounders coming from there, but the biggest ones we ever pulled out were probably 20ish plus or minus a bit. Didn't have a scale back then, so mostly just guessing.
    Great way to spend the weekend, camping out on the river, slaying the bass by day and the cats by night.

    So love the C&R.
    I grew up on the upper Mississippi. I was real young back in early 70's and would try to snag cats that were 5 to 6 feet long, they'd come up to sun themselves in the damn overflows and I never did catch one. I guess they were 200lb to 300lb fish. Met an oltimer years later and got to talking about them days. He said he and his buddies fished out the area sad enough. Used to use the winch on their trucks to get em out of the water.

    Piece of advice that’s the best I’ve gotten for fishin, from a old timer if you could imagine that. When you think you lost the fish and didn’t hook, instead of immediately reeling in to see if you have any bait or recast, just give it a minute. If he spits it out, leave it sit, slowlyyyy reel in. Caught so many blues off this technique. It’s a bad habit to always reel in immediately after losing the fish, if you still have bait, he could come back or get another could bite. No use in reeling in quickly to throw it back out. Hope this helps I promise it will work 50% of the time!

  • @thomopolusrex8436
    @thomopolusrex8436 6 років тому +24

    nice catch, dude.
    The secret about fishing is in how you set your bait. Those fish that you lost were lost because you didn't set the bait on the hook properly. In theory, its not about being a master fisherman, instead its all about being a master baiter.

    That one was bigger than the last one for sure.My favorite catfish out of them all.Their so ugly till their handsome.Kinda remind,s me of a lot of my friend,s mother in laws with that huge mouth.ha.ha.Their the one catfish that doesn't play by the rule,s when fishing live bait laying flat on the bottom.Many time,s even when using a circle hook they will swallow the bait down deep in their gullet before they even run.I caught a big flathead back in the seventies down deep in it,s gut and put it in a big metal stocktank I kept live bait in, and in a few day,s it died and when I gutted it I found the hook went through it,s gut lining into it,s vital organs.I believe if one is down in the gut its best just to cut the line and turn him loose and hope for the best.Many time,s you will catch a huge cat that is blind in one of it,s eye,s and most of that im sure if it was traced back to the cause,it was done as a juvenile by a hook going up and through the back of it,s eye before it was released.Last year I fished a spot that about a week before I watched a you tuber catch and release a 50 pound blue in front of a dam.When I went up behind the dam there was a bunch of log,s jammed up in a pile,and there was a big blue floating dead in among the log,s,and when I looked at it close I could see a green line down in it,s throat.Many time,s ive watched their videos and when it,s hooked in the corner of the mouth they will show it and say,it worked the way it was designed to right in the corner of the mouth,but then many time,s on a flathead that,s gut hooked they wont show that part so you wont know it was really in the gut.If I was solely fishing on bottom for flatheads to release I would use a j hook style and let them run a little then set the hook to help eliminate gut hooking. Hope your out on the water soon,and feeling better.

    I am pretty sure that big flathead is the same fish that spit the hook the other 2 times. Since it did not get scared away and it knew there was food there it stuck around.

    What a surprise, you whined & gloated in the same video, that's never happened before cough, cough. However, when you are UA-cam's #1 Kayak Catfisherman you can do whatever the #&*^ you feel like doing. BTW, I watched this at the gym while rehabbing my knee on the exercise bike not that it matters.

    I've been using circle C hooks for years and have never not set the hook like normal. You don't try to rip them out of the water but you have to apply some good pressure. Also why not use the click?

    • @ryannlarge1486
      @ryannlarge1486 5 років тому

      They're designed not to be set. The fish sets the hook on itself. With the shape of the hook if you go to set it you're either going to snag in the fishes throat or you're going to pull it out of its mouth.

    Great video!! I just started using circle hooks with cut skipjack. I am using 6/0 to 8/0 team catfish hooks. Hard not to jerk on the fish. Does the sinker on the bait work better? Is the rods team catfish and what size line do u use?

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I use ugly stik catfish rods and 80lb line. I like the knocker rig versus the Carolina rig for kayak fishing. I have a video that goes in depth about why I made the change of you are interested. Thanks for watching.

    I'd like to see states like Oklahoma make Flatheads a game fish and take them out of the trash fish category. I wish Kansas would implement a slot limit like missouri has some of their lakes. It keeps the big fish in the lakes to help with breeding.

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  5 років тому

      Yeah it would be nice if every state protected catfish like they do other sport fish.

    Circle hooks with live bluegill is the ONLY way to fish for Catfish...My pond is loaded with big Catfish ranging from 8 to 50 pounders. Caught my personal best 56 out of there last summer using live bluegill. Live preferred, but cut bait does just as well. Good Luck!

    Awesome fish! Was wondering if you have a reason for not setting the hook better and if you think that has anything to do with loosing two of them?

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  6 років тому

      I use circle hooks. If you set them like a traditional hook, you will pull them out of the fish’s mouth every time. The hook needs time to turn and catch in the corner of their mouth. It’s best to either reel down or let the fish hook itself.
