Awesome tutorial. I'm glad I found this channel! One question though: how did you get the shot stabilized so well? I applied the Warp Stabilizer effect, but it didn't work as well as yours did.
I used the warp stabilizer, but I also shot the original footage with the camera on wheels to smooth out the motion, which will do more for stabilization than the warp stabilizer or any post production techniques ever could pull off. If at all possible always try to do as much stabilization you can do in production.

Really excellent tutorial. Very helpful. I do have one quick question. You note in this tutorial that the footage in the background can sometimes be "off." Have you by chance figured out what causes this issue? I'm experiencing it with my current project, and it seems like there must be some sort of solution. Thanks again!
I followed along what I thought was exactly to the letter. When you got to the point where you brought the C4D file into After Effects and then you selected Final Render quality in the drop down, your grey ground plane from C4D went away and yet I still see mine. How do you get the ground plane from the C4D file to disappear? Did you leave out a step or what did I miss?
Very nice! To get these objects back in cinema rocks! :) Can anybody tell me if or how it is possible to use external renderers like vray with that bridge? I was not able to get this work.

you show us here so many grate things!!! Tnx for that! I have one problem, when I open my project in C4D camera is not animated. What can be a problem?
Hey Sean, Do you still like using the 3D camera Tracker in AE or do you prefer using R17's tracker better? Obviously, doing it in C4D saves you a step, but I had some trouble with it when I sent it back to AE even though I used like 5000 tracking points.
+Cesar Huitron They've both gotten pretty good, it depends what you are doing, but if anything it is good to know that if you don't get the results you want with one, you can try the other.

Hey! I understood really well but I have one problem , I have After Effects CS6 and I cant export into a MAXON CINEMA 4D Exporter. What should I do? Please answer this as soon as possible
I have shot many, many simple scenes specifically for the 3D tracker but still I ALWAYS get an Average Error of more 1.25 pixels or more. What am I doing wrong? How can I remedy this? I have already tried deleting points, but it just makes the error even higher. So aggravating!!!
+Thor Guldager It is more of a 3-dimensional move that you could do on a crane, or with a steadicam. Or in this case, I used rollerblades from when I was a cool kid in the 90s to get the steady movement, and then used Warp Stabilizer to smooth out the footage further. Good idea on creating a tutorial on the camera movement, I will work on that idea too!
yeah but with the props i do not have full control of the gun, with this I can make some EPIC slow motion :D I can animate it the way I want :D kind of fake slow mo
You'll need to have tracking markers for where the gun will be, match the 3D rotation and movement of both the camera and the actor, track in the 3D gun, then add lighting and shadows to match the gun to the scene, add shadows and highlights onto the character holding the gun, add additional shadows onto the gun that would be cast from the character, add an Environment reflection onto the 3D gun to match the environment of the scene, color correct the gun to match the scene, then color grade the full shot. Then you could add the post-FX stuff like the muzzle flashes and smoke puff, or lasers, or the type of shot from the type of gun that it is.
The whole blending in he stuff with the scene and the shadows and lighting I understand:D This is what I was trying to do. I have a plastic gun with no Gun Slide, The gun is totally black, I placed 4 white paper squares on the Gun to use as tracking markers, I Plan to record myself with the gun in front of a green screen so that the end video will be with a black background. I did a test for the tracking markers. I made a test video where I just put the guns clip in the gun (the clip has 2 of the white tracking markers) and moved the gun a little around (the barrel of the gun has the other 2 tracking markers). In AE I tracked them with the 2D tracker and had turned on Position, Rotation and Scale, so I ended up with 2 NULLs with the information of the track, the track turned out great. But when I parented the 3D gun model from Element to the tracking data it gave out very bad results, I even tried making 2 NULLs one for the 3D model of the gun and one for the 3D model guns clip using Elements "Creat Group Null" option and applying the track data to them, still very bad results.... I am not sure if I wrote this down so it can be understood....... basically I am having trouble making the tracking data work on the 3D gun in the Element layer. Could it be that the tracking data is done on a 2D layer (the video) and can not work with the 3D layer which is a SOLID that has the Element plugin on it.....?
another question so you dont really need to render in cinema4d you can just render your final project in after effects?i seen other tutorials where they render in sequence in cinema 4d and then import all those image sequence into after effects .. is there a difference ?
It depends what the final render is for. If you only have access to C4D lite, you have to do the final rendering in AE. If you have the full version of C4D, you could also pre-render it in C4D's renderer, and just do the final compositing in AE.
Thanks for the reply but doesn’t it take longer to render in cinema 4d then after effects or same i just noticed it takes longer to render in cinema thats why i asked
These things add the most to render time: - Anti-aliasing settings, blurry reflections, AO settings, Global Illumination, Transparency in materials (like glass)

Sometimes you might just need to restart the computer and AE to get the connection to reset and work properly. But also when exporting the nulls, really the only things that need to get over to C4D lite are the nulls and camera.
When I import the plane into CD4, it doesn't line up with the workplane, which makes it harder to apply objects to the surface it needs to be on. It's on a weird slant. Is there a way to align the plane from AE to line up with the workplane?
Cloud797 If you set the origin in AE, then it should line up to how the ground plane is in the shot. In the case of this shot, the ground is slanted a bit, then you use the grid in C4D as a reference of the ground.
The cineware connection was first introduced a couple years back in after effects CC, it didn't exist yet in CS 6, so that's why. If you update your after effects and Adobe apps that'll be there.
You can import C4D files the same way with the full studio version, this is just a quick compositing technique! If you have C4D studio, it is the same import and back / forth steps.
MINECRAFT IN REAL LIFE can you do a tutorial on minecraft rigs because i tried with this method but in after effects i can' see the 3d object , PLISSSS hepl !!!!
Hey, so I have managed to go about without that preview.. I am now encountering a new problem. When I import my c4d file into After effects, it won't show? I 've followed all steps correctly.. any ideas?
The big difference with importing C4D files in through Cineware is that there isn't procedural rendering, so it'll be black until it finishes rendering the frame. You could temporarily put the Cineware effect on "Software" to get a quick preview.
Hello excuse me could you give a mail where I can reach in order to ask you if you could do a JOB for us, and that would be, ask you if you can insert a singer that we produce, she is on a green screen with tracking points shooted with a good camera but we don't like the live footage environment in where we placed her, so the idea is to change the ambience and insert this live footage to a virtual set. with after effects and Cinema 4D for AE is this possible? and also ask you if the price for doing this, is possible for us, since we don't have a big budget and any idea of how much this could cost.
GAH, so everything works, but when I open the 3D tracked comp in Cinema 4D, the camera object doesn't move. All the nulls are there, but the camera literally does nothing and defeating the whole purpose of doing that. What am I doing wrong??
Was the moving camera created in After Effects? Could be that, make sure to check from the top view in AE that the camera is moving in AE, then it should all export to C4D Lite.
do you have solved the problem? Have the same problem, in AE the tracking works fine, in Cinema 4d lite i have the Camera and the nulls (see and can work with them) but nothing moves when i play...
This workflow is one way you could do that type of thing. It also looks like they saved some work by using mostly locked off camera moves and adding a bit of wiggle in Post to make it feel handheld, which can be a good tactic for making 3D compositing easier.
When I press "export" it shows me only "Adobe Flash Player (SWF)...", "Adobe Flash Professional (XFL)..." and "Adobe Premier Pro Project"...Help me please...
+SNN STUDIOS Ah, that's why. Cinema 4D integration came into After Effects in CC (2013). It didn't exist yet in CS 5 (2010). If you update After Effects to the current version through the Adobe Updater App, it'll all be there!
+Jibbly Gibblet Are you in CS 6 or earlier? Set ground plane and origin was a new feature starting in CC. Otherwise, it could be if the camera is set to "tripod pan"
+Ben That probably means it is still rendering, but AE doesn't show it progressively, it'll only show the frame once that frame is fully rendered. If you are getting a weird Cineware connection error, restart the computer and it should work.
+Sat Focus Thanks for checking out the tutorials, you can get access to project files and footage by helping the show on Patreon at Patreon.com/SeanFrangella Thanks!
Ah, yeah, the ground plain and origin was added the next year in AE CC (2013). What is this kind of camera movement technique called? And do you have a good link/tutorial explaining how to do something like it? Thanks!

Good idea on creating a tutorial on the camera movement, I will work on that idea too!
Just like everytime i try to motion track something i open CInema 4d and the grid is side ways or something.
If I had an animated object rather than a still sphere, could I still go about this the same way?
Yes, it'd still work the same, as long as the tracking is done first and the ground plane matches up.

ELKINGLUI FPV: works now:) thx!
I need help. I haven't the botton at 4:58..Thank's :)
why did u had to create all those nulls? u cant just use like 3?
Just to check.
Do you think this is how they made this video?
/watch?v=wBqM2ytqHY4
Thanks!
This workflow is one way you could do that type of thing. It also looks like they saved some work by using mostly locked off camera moves and adding a bit of wiggle in Post to make it feel handheld, which can be a good tactic for making 3D compositing easier.
Cool, Thanks for the reply!
***** Thanks for the feedback! That is next on my list of things to do, look for it in the next few weeks.
"AEGP Plugin MAXON cinema 4D Exporter...: 2D layers found, these will not be exported. (5027 :: 12)" Can someone help me please?
it doesn't matter, just continue
it doesn't matter
When I press "export" it shows me only "Adobe Flash Player (SWF)...", "Adobe Flash Professional (XFL)..." and "Adobe Premier Pro Project"...Help me please...
+SNN STUDIOS Which version of After Effects are you on?
CS5
+SNN STUDIOS Ah, that's why. Cinema 4D integration came into After Effects in CC (2013). It didn't exist yet in CS 5 (2010).
If you update After Effects to the current version through the Adobe Updater App, it'll all be there!
Thank you!
I cant use my video as background
Do u know how I can fix it
Be sure to check the button in the background material, Editor > Show animated Background. This is just for reference.
thx
what about the shadow ????
That can be imported on a layer using multi-pass. I get into that in part 2!
I don't have the "Set ground Plane and Origin" option.
+Jibbly Gibblet Are you in CS 6 or earlier? Set ground plane and origin was a new feature starting in CC. Otherwise, it could be if the camera is set to "tripod pan"
Sean Frangella I'm in CS6, so I guess that would be why.
+Jibbly Gibblet Ah, yeah, that is why. This was added in CC, right after CS 6. Orienting the camera is a bit more of a pain in CS 6.
ineed tutorial for animation character in c4d and tools character
monte conte For sure, getting more into character animation is definitely something I've been looking into.
How about the shadow ?
Watch part 2 where I go over that in great detail: www.motiontutorials.net/blog-tutorials/3d-compositing-cinema4d-after-effects-part2
When i add my 4d file file into AE My composion turns black
+Ben That probably means it is still rendering, but AE doesn't show it progressively, it'll only show the frame once that frame is fully rendered. If you are getting a weird Cineware connection error, restart the computer and it should work.
+Sean Frangella thanks bro!
can i get the footage please????
+Sat Focus Thanks for checking out the tutorials, you can get access to project files and footage by helping the show on Patreon at Patreon.com/SeanFrangella
Thanks!
ok thanks
I don't have "set ground plane and origin" :(
Are you on AE CS 6 or earlier?
Sean Frangella
CS6 :)
Ah, yeah, the ground plain and origin was added the next year in AE CC (2013). CS 6 was the first release of the camera tracker so it is pretty limited compared to the updates they've added the last few years.
For some additional updates to After Effects on the topic, be sure to check out some of the full articles at www.MotionTutorials.net and the AE products I have up at www.MotionTutorials.net/store
and my computer lags while watching this video in chrome XD
Can't help you there!
nothing as shown in the video :D
Dude, poor Pad 0... lol
GOOD :)
but you are to fast
If I go slower people close the window a lot quicker! Thanks for checking out the tutorials! Be sure to check out the full site at www.MotionTutorials.net for more After Effects & Cinema 4D Tutorials!
Sean Frangella Thanks
It's much much much easier to scrub through a short tutorial than a 45 minute tut.
Man, it´s a keyboard not a fucking buzzer.
Your taking too much btw bro be quicker 😊
Too fast and too much info at the beginning so it's hard to learn from this tut
Great tutorial, Thank you!
Awesome!
