In my point of view, the North coast of the Mediterranean Sea had had a significant part on the evolution of hominins. As far as we know places like Greece, Turkey, Sicily etc were the places where superior chimpanzee looking apes were first evolved. We can't be sure if they migrated back to Africa when the conditions were not suitable for the survival of large apes, but if they did, they most certainly begun to evolve and diversity in Africa. We still need more samples from the fossil record to be sure though.
Ya i definitely agree. I feel like it is a compelling theory and there's no reason to think this would not be possible. There are so many black holes in the fossil record we really only have a fleeting glimpse of what actually happened
