Interesting you say that, because I searched this song for the sole reason of reading the comments and seeing if anyone else noticed just how similar the later track, “Orphans of Babylon”, is to this.
this is sensational, after all these years it still sends me. There's not many songs that you can play back to back and they give you goosebumps the second time.
awesome live performance, of an underrated rock song. this was on the old grey whistle test which was the best ever music programme us brits ever had. cause you got a lot of magic performances like this.
The OGWT was great. No annoying audience, no look-at-me presenter, just Whispering Bob and his love of music, a deathly quiet atmosphere in the studio where some great bands and singers made magic, like Tim Buckley, Family, The Who, Captain Beefheart etc.
I absolutely loved this band,I first saw them at the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes (supporting Cockney Rebel,I believe) in 1973/4.Went to see them again at the same venue the next year when they were supported by Nutz.Great days!
I was at that gig..some friends dragged me along to see Cockney Rebel who were getting great reviews at that time..never hear of Be Bop Delux......I just remember this band taking the stage..looking rather awkward..never took much attention until the guitar player took a solo on the first song..probably Axe Victim.....what a player...very fluid..I remember some patter about Yorkshire..then Mr Bill Nelson sang a plaintive vocal that led to some of the most amazing guitar playing...Adventures in Yorkshire Landscape....the next day it was down to Rayners on Freeman St to get the album....Cockney Rebel were pretty dire..lots of great gigs at the Gardens..the best ones for me were AC/DC. ..Rory Gallagher...Motorhead..Juicy Lucy..Flaming Groovies,,....so many more..thanks for posting...Mr Nelson was and still is a amazing musician.
I went out to buy their album 'Futurama' after seeing this. Great track that should have been a top ten hit. But listening now, it probably went over the head of the average teen at the time!
awesome live performance, and a very underrated track, the old grey whistle test was easy the best music programme us brits had, cause you get a lot of magic performances like this.
Love it, and so hard to find good quality videos of the band or of Bill himself. Loved this era and their live performances, and Bill is of course a top soloist. And songwriter, arranger, engineer, etc etc.
First saw Be Bop supporting Cockney Rebel and loved them. Went to see them again and they were brilliant, Cockney Rebel not so much. Next time Bill had got rid of his band and played with the members of Cockney Rebel who'd left. After that he got a great band together and I saw them live many times. Still play their albums to this day.
Was this concert you saw at Bracknell sports centre in 1974 by any chance? They were supporting Cockney Rebel but they were the better band. I recall seeing both there, and shortly after (?) they swapped a few musicians. I distinctly remember Bill Nelson singing a haunting version of Terminal Street.
No. The first time was in some small hall and I'm not sure exactly where. It was somewhere on the District Line close to Barking. The second time was in Southend. The gig with the ex Rebels was in Croydon.@@carlteacherman194
If Bill Nelson had wanted to cash in, he would have continued down the rock band route and exploited his excellent songwriting and, in particular, his guitar genius, but he didn't want to be pigeon holed. He was too artistic to do that .
I'm listening to this via the crappy built in speakers on my laptop and it doesn't sound good. However I did listen to this on a very good 1980's HiFi set up centred around vinyl and high end cassettes. A world of difference.
MrCopperthwaite Well well , a comment from someone about some thing I put on here 3/4 of a year ago, though not in relation to Be Bop Deluxe at all but about an apostrophe, a frigging apostrophe which you thought was worth picking me up on , quite sad.
permaveg If you like using non-functional punctuation, there's nothing to stop you. It does though, hamper you if you want to be taken seriously. If you don't mind signalling to readers that you are not in command, fair play to you.
+DrGrafenberg Not Phyl Lynot but is bassist and vocalist Robert Bryan. Albeit I saw similarities as well and had to double check. Being that Thin Lizzy and Be Bop Deluxe shared a simultaneous time line the two bass players being the same person is impossible.
Be Bop Deluxe one word Class, Bill Nelson is one of the best guitarists I have ever heard.
Hardly two songs from Be Bop Deluxe sound the same....the mark of a truly great and unique band .
Interesting you say that, because I searched this song for the sole reason of reading the comments and seeing if anyone else noticed just how similar the later track, “Orphans of Babylon”, is to this.
Probably the greatest sub-3 minute song ever! Great band, incredible guitarist - loved 'em.
pro tip: watch movies on InstaFlixxer. Been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Darwin Luciano yea, have been using instaflixxer for since december myself =)
Not probably
I did too ❤
nearly 40 years later, i still never tire of listening to this!
I absolutely loved this band!! I was lucky enough to see them twice and had all their albums. I still listen to them today. They were Great Fun! 😊😃🥰❤️
Who’s the cool looking bass guitarist ?
Great guitarist great song writer great band great musicians bill Nelson legend
Just wished it went on longer.Such a great song
I know man a 12 inch extended version would have been epic
A very humble genius, that we let slip away like ships in the night.
*_So beautifully said, and so true. My Grandpa was (and still is ) a huge fan ..._*
Bass and Lead perfectly in synch and both singing in perfect harmony. Not to mention the kick ass drumming. This was a very good band.
These guys were so good!! Way ahead of their time!
Definitely one of the great 70s bands.
this is sensational, after all these years it still sends me. There's not many songs that you can play back to back and they give you goosebumps the second time.

Dermot Mitchell so true dude. best music live programe ever.
I carried ny dad's coffin ti the alter at ardleys crem to this song

Doesn't get any better than BeBopDeluxe
I went out to buy their album 'Futurama' after seeing this. Great track that should have been a top ten hit. But listening now, it probably went over the head of the average teen at the time!
I'm 16, I love it :)
Teens knew what was good but sadly millions were alienated by the suits on mainstream radio and television...
Oh man, that was cut short. I was really enjoying those close harmonies. Great singing. Jeez, I can't believe these guys flew under the radar.
Not cut short...2mins 18secs of pure gold..
One of the first and most loved bands i've ever seen or heard I WILL ALWAYS be an axe victem xxx
Saw them in the Fairway, Leeds when Cathy Simms (R.I.P.) was landlady......They were awesome and so was Cathy
Theres our Charlie ,Gary Thane as well .True musicians
Kiwi legends bro
I adore Bill Nelson.
awesome live performance, and a very underrated track, the old grey whistle test was easy the best music programme us brits had, cause you get a lot of magic performances like this.
Those were the days! Excellent upload. Thank you.
Be Bop D # Bill Nelson great band still sounds fresh after all these years. Rock on
Big fan of the bebopdeluxe....
they smashed the music industry with great lyrics and talent
Just wish it went on longer.
I think the shortness of this is perfection. 2 min 18 secs.. Another example of the wonderfully clever mind of a great songwriter...Mr Bill Nelson. .
@@mozartsmate6358sorry,but I still wish it went on longer.
@@drwho3821 I take your point.
Yeagh underated Gent mr nelson!🎉Guitar and musical /voice Genius!!
One of the greatest songs ever by perhaps the best band ever.
Lotta love between Bill & Charlie
Love it, and so hard to find good quality videos of the band or of Bill himself. Loved this era and their live performances, and Bill is of course a top soloist. And songwriter, arranger, engineer, etc etc.
Great! I loved Be bo deluxe when I heard them on John Peel back in the 70s. Still sound good.
RIP Charles Tumahai (bassist/vocalist)
Its Charlie ❤️❤️
Oh sad?
@@stevienugnugent9986 // +1
I saw them 2x in the 70's...always liked them very much...very talented, and no...not just a Bowie knock-off
You are very fortunate to have seen this band live back in the day.
I watched this at the time, totally rapt - we couldn’t record it in ‘75 let alone pause, rewind, warch on +1 etc. Great band.
Saw them live in the seventies
You are a very fortunate individual.
I did as well. Outstanding show.
what happy memories this holds for me brilliant band
Bill's got some serious Lionels on there.
Check out Bill's website for special 3 disc set with Whistle Test sessions and Sight & Sound 1978 concert DVD. Scheduled release this autumn!!
Band was absolutely exploding when Bill Nelson pulled the plug on the band to make crazy industrial music 😢 They were F***n GREAT 👍
Missing Charlie...
Punk/new wave sidelined this lovely lot.I loved the new lot, pistols, buzzcocks etc.but loved "Modern music" album as well.
There's really australian documentary on the life of Charlie. Well worth a look.
My god way beyond their time 😅
perfection
wow. 'real music', imagine that? brilliant outfit.
A track that could define the 1970s, check out "jet silver and the dolls of Venus" and "japan" by this totally underrated band
wonderful
great clean guitar...not distortion...just the right amount of overdrive....the guitar sounds super clean on its isolated track...
Maid in heaven ,Deluxe track !
If Bill Nelson had wanted to cash in, he would have continued down the rock band route and exploited his excellent songwriting and, in particular, his guitar genius, but he didn't want to be pigeon holed. He was too artistic to do that .
In the top 100 of all time.
Fabulous
Whenever anyone asks my opinion on the 'greatest guitarists ever', the name of Bill Nelson always arises (along with Jeff Beck and Phil Keaggy)...
Fkin brilliant 💥💥💥
Bill Nelson is a legend.
A great band,, luckily Bill Nelson is still gigging.
I'm listening to this via the crappy built in speakers on my laptop and it doesn't sound good. However I did listen to this on a very good 1980's HiFi set up centred around vinyl and high end cassettes. A world of difference.
Hey when I first heard this song I thought it was early Rush!!
Must have seen then around this time in the Empire, Edinburgh.
This was truely made in heaven
That fucking guitar work
Great song. Camera work only matched by Bill Nelson’s jacket though 🙄
I have to quibble with the date on this video. I’m fairly sure this was from late ‘76.
Just a question of style.... love or love 😀
This was a very strange year for music.
Decent Music
Why has the version of Sister Seagull from this session disappeared from UA-cam ?
Strange as he rates you as a music critic, and speaks highly of you!
@gigspy
Like wise gigspy, so under rated and top tune
Bloody hell ! Getting on for 40,000 views, that say's it all.
permaveg What on earth is that apostrophe doing?
MrCopperthwaite Well well , a comment from someone about some thing I put on here 3/4 of a year ago, though not in relation to Be Bop Deluxe at all but about an apostrophe, a frigging apostrophe which you thought was worth picking me up on , quite sad.
permaveg My pleasure. Glad to have been of assistance.
MrCopperthwaite Delusional as well as pedantic, even more sad.
permaveg If you like using non-functional punctuation, there's nothing to stop you. It does though, hamper you if you want to be taken seriously. If you don't mind signalling to readers that you are not in command, fair play to you.
Phil Lynott on bass & even a "Lizzy" lick in there too!
+DrGrafenberg I get the Lizzy lick ... but looks as much like Lynott as Bill does, lol
+David Bickerdike Ha ha, great, David!
+DrGrafenberg It's actually Charles Tumahai who like Lynott is also dead RIP Charles great bass player and all round fun guy.
+David Bickerdike Great Dan Reed Network logo by the way!!
+DrGrafenberg

something of Ry Cooder here?
I can hear Billy Joel doing this. A la Just a fantasy.
Need to add great band
So he should! He knows his place.
Late to the detail of this group and expanse of records .... absolutely gob smacking!!
big influence
Anyone else think this could be a thin Lizzy song?
why is the Sun going around the earth faster
Diamond Dave Roth brought me here.
Merlin Mann sent me here.
Probably born two years too early magic
one of the guys in this band looks like the hamster from bbc's topgear
Hipsters
Preferred him in New Order😂
Bill Nelson! Dayum!
