And this video proved Greg and Jr wasn't a good combo. They may have won a few races in 2015, but after that, it went down hill. I still believe if Steve hadn't retired from being a crew chief, Jr would have a killer 2015 season. 2014 was amazing season for him.
I remember hearing DW and Larry Mac mention during a race once that Jr. sounds just like his Dad on the radio. Ever since I heard that, that's all I can think about when listening to videos like this.
I remember at Atlanta one year . He was driving number 8 car.they asked him about how his car was doing. “Got a vibration it’s about to rattle my damn teeth out”
You see the integrity and and true person that Junior is, when he congratulates MTJ on his championship. "I'm so proud of you". Not teammates, just a good friend who knows the behind-the-scenes struggles Truex likely went through during the season and what he did to win that Cup. It's a little dusty in here.
Ives is awful. If the car unloads good and they don't have to adjust it, it'll run up front most of the day until Greg makes a stupid pit call or something. If they have to work on the car at all, it wont be competitive for the entire weekend. There is no middle ground with him on the pit box.
Damn Greg Ives has no idea WTF he's doing. The moment he took over at crew chief it all started going down hill. Jr is still the best on the radio regardless, lol.
Jr. probably just didn't say anything because he saw what him and Bowman acclompished in 2016. Hopefully they can keep their streak, but Greg and Jr. is a combo that originated in hell.
+Travis Oliver I think Jr said as much as he could but hardly anything got done for two reasons: 1) Jr and Ives aren't a very good pairing, and 2) by mid 2016 and into Jr's swansong season, it was too late by that point.
Steve Letarte came in and made the 88 a championship contending team and the Greg Ives comes in and take a dump all over that. Greg needs to stick to working on Xfinity cars since thats his strong suit
I've said it once and I'll say it again, Greg Ives isn't a great crew chief. Certainly wasn't a good fit with Dale Jr, his style of driving and his style of communication. There always seemed to be a lack of chemistry between the two of them and Dale's results on track in 2015/2016/2017 speak to that fact. The best crew chiefs Jr. ever had were Tony Eury Sr and Steve LeTarte. Jr;s chemistry with Steve Letarte in particular was special. He won more races with Sr but that was during a different era and the DEI cars in the gen 4 era were very good across the board. Jr was younger, more aggressive, etc. But Jr's chemistry with LeTarte was just great. They were always on the same page. They came very close to winning a championship in 2014 because they were always on the same wave length in terms of adjustments, and Steve just knew how to communicate with both Dale and TJ Majors. They had a special relationship and enjoyed working with each other, not to mention Steve was one of the smartest crew chiefs in the business and still is. You can hear it in the radio communications. Compare races from 2014 to him with Greg Ives in 2015-2017. Jr seemed to get annoyed easily with Greg's style of communication...like he wasn't getting enough information or they couldn't agree on setting up the car from time to time, things like that. The only guy worse than Ives(not counting all the temporary crew chiefs) was Eury Jr. That's one case where you can be real close friends with a guy but he's not the smartest guy in terms of race strategy or adjusting the car.
Eury jr was more of a car chief than a crew chief I think dale should have took tony sr with him to HMS and have tony jr just focus on the car like the dei days
You hardly ever hear jr bitch about another driver, though it does happen, it's mostly him bitching about his car.(with reason). After DEI it felt like he never got a consistent competitive car. Especially after his championship run in 2012. Then you add Dale's concussions to it. Glad he got of out the car on his own terms. But I always think what his career would've been like if he was healthy. Mind you he still won 26 times, 10 of those were restrictor plates races. So it's not like he didn't have the talent everyone expected him to have, it was there, just other things masked over it, death of his father obviously, dealing with she who must not be named, dealing with concussions his ENTIRE career. Man..
I love all the people on here blaming Greg Ives for him blowing hit out his ass the last year he raced, if you read his book or watch an interview he did about his concussion issues he point blank said he was afraid to race he rode in the back on purpose just trying to limp through the season to get away, such a shame he was an incredible talent behind that wheel
TheDieHardWWEAddict actually it’s true how else do you explain bowman running in the top 10 and 5 contending for a win and he getting in the car and running like dog shit he was afraid to push the car
@@hacksawjimthuggin7411 Honestly i started thinking about just how many races Dale Jr has come up just short in, and it's got to be at least 11 races from what I counted, and at least half of them are fuel mileage races too. Kind of funny the longer I started to think about it
Wow. I know in the Heat of the Moment stuff can get said. But I lost a lot of respect for junior Here. Let me ask the track bar? Are you kidding me you're a race car driver right? you don't feel a difference at all. Jr may be a hell of a person but I'm sorry the Apple fell pretty far from the tree on this one
He was joking. Letarte would have laughed at the comment and made as many adjustments as he could to help Jr. Ives just doesnt act like that, his chemistry with Jr. was not good. When you communicate with your crew chief it has to be able to work well together. Johnson and Knaus won 5 straight and 7 total by being that way. Jr. was competitive doing that. Gordon with Evernham, etc. You have to do things on a mutual level that would lead to success. If your drivers frustrated, dont ask “Is the trackbar helping?” Say “Do we need to adjust it more? Up or down?”
@@hacksawjimthuggin7411 yea I do actually, I find early Kurt Bush hilarious. The driver usually don't talk like that to his team unless they made a mistake, they just asked him a question.
