Its not for being another DPS for the team. Its literally, by its name, about supporting the carries. Enabling them to do damage, by either keeping them alive, stoping enemy engages, buffing carries damage or engaging for the carry. And in my opinion the reason term "support" has lost it's meaning is mainly due people caring for the rank and nothing else. Not fun, not getting better, just a damn number going up. And that's sadly how it goes with most competitive things in this damn world. And it's called Goodhart's law: "When a metric becomes a target it stops being a good metric." Or more directly in this case: When getting higher in a ranking system is the goal of the climb, the ranking system stops being a good ranking system. It no longer measures players skill, it measures their ability to abuse it and get as much out of it doing so.
Clearly he was referring to supports that keep roaming instead of staying in lane to help their adc. And many people who pick 'supports' probably just find it more fun than the traditional support you described, just like how some people use cheese picks because they only care about rank (but at the same time some people just find it fun). It's not a black and white case like you seem to be alluding. So imo, just don't care so much about this 10+ year old game and do what makes you happy
yeah sure heimer support into talon mid evelynn jg etc is "selfish" when its to make your lane impossible to gank, shaco is just pyke with easier impact
