A great easy to follow tutorial. As the 555 timer can both source current and sink current on its pin 3 you could have just connected the red led with a 510 ohm resistor between pin 3 and Vcc (+ 5.5 volts) leaving the green led as it is in your circuit.. No need for the 1000 uF capacitor. The two leds will alternate flash then.
