I hope I have my homestead someday. I'm currently 16 and I've been dreaming of living on my own homestead for years. I grew up with a family who loves nature and animals, and in the past couple years I've started doing lots of research and learning little skills that could help me build up to being mostly self reliant as an adult. This year I was set on having chickens for the first time. I built a coop and a pen for them and for Easter this year I got 7 baby chicks. They're laying eggs now! Raising my own chickens was such a great experience and I'm so glad all of them are happy, healthy, and are now laying healthy eggs every day. Your videos helped me a LOT with learning how to raise my chickens, so thank you! This fall I will start working more on "household" sorts of activities, starting with processing the walnuts we've had growing on trees in our back yard for years. I think I'll start making my own soap too, so I'm sure your videos will help me out again.
Agreed! I remember wanting to live off the land when I was very young… ages 4, 5 etc. In the early 70s and now I’m 50 and still it rigs at my heart. Enough - I’m making a plan!!!
Your videos are so fun and informative. I love your practical approach to things. I hope to do just what you're doing one day...and soon I hope. Sooooo ready. Thanks for the inspiration!
I just ordered from Amazon a week go I wish I would've known that as I've been following you for a long time I don't know how I missed that I guess I just didn't take time been busy trying to figure out what state I want to go make my homestead at I have a little boy with diabetes and I live in Arizona and we spend 800 or more on groceries a month and it's killing me I really could use the life of less grocery shopping and so it be perfect I love everything about you I almost think I need to live by you just so that I can be just as good as you everything will be new for me because I don't know anybody in Texas or Tennessee you motivate me in so many ways I know I could do it alone thank you I can't get enough of your videos God bless you and your family
Homesteading is the hubs and I dream. While we aren't in the position now to do it we are teaching ourselves new skills that will be helpful when we finally get to do it (canning, cheese making, I'm even trying my hand at making my own sourdough starter this week! Oh and wine making... not a necessity but a little wine never hurts!) Thank you so much for your fun and informative videos.
I had wanted to be a homesteader since I was a child! I grew up in a big city, but it was always in my heart. Thank you for providing the encouragement!
Oh i want want want "an alternative life" as i always call it to my husband! 1st we would need to purchase some land !which with no extra money (only he works) would be VERY very pricey here in the UK. But not to fear we are scouting out for good land at the moment and then we shall see. I love you channel, its so inspiring to us! xxxx
Becky, I was born in Orlando, and I always joke that I not only was born in the wrong area but also in the wrong era. I should have been a pioneer woman! Love your video. Thx.
Becky, I read you live in Florida? I lived in Jacksonville for three years. I couldn't grow anything during the summer because of the heat. I have a green thumb when it comes to gardening, but not there. I finally started a winter garden under clear plastic, and it was wonderful. I also found out that squash grows amazing. I threw seeds out the door because I was upset about things not growing, and LOL they grew. No burying or anything. I was shocked. Best harvest I ever had. Another tip to keep older chickens laying longer and in hot and cold, give them a little more protein in their diet. Thanks for the videos Becky
+Annie Tomsik I live in Jacksonville and can grow year round with no problems. I grow under plastic in the "winter", chard, collards, lettuces, radishes. In the summer, corn, tomatoes, Sicilian Broccoli, beans, tobacco, etc.
What I am currently researching is how to live "the simple life" on a day-to-day basis without the off-site job, a pension, or other outside income coming in. I think people "get" how to save up and initially purchase their property, but what comes after if moving to it means giving up the day job?? How does one pay the property taxes, put gas in the vehicle every week, buy animal feed, etc. etc. THAT is where most people stall out and have failures IMHO. And those who live on their homesteads full time seemingly well, without an outside job or trust fund (well, maybe they DO have a trust fund) aren't giving up how they are doing that. Where does their monthly expense money come from now that they've made the move? No one will talk about that. I've come to the conclusion that the people who are financially secure and comfortable on their homesteads are the ones who either started with a very large nest egg, have retirement or other outside income coming in every month, or have kept their day jobs to support their homesteading endeavors.
The only people I truly know, who lived successfully on a farm, were my grandparents. They supplemented their income on Pa's full-time job working for Gold Spot Dairy. When he wasn't delivering milk, he was farming his Homestead.
Michigansnowpony As she said, it is important to start small. For instance, it is "homesteading" to begin with if all you have is a potted tomato plant on your apartment balcony. Then you can take it from there. Financially, everyone is in a different situation. We are retired now, and live on a small income, but have a milk goat, chickens, a vegetable garden and a wood lot for heat. The idea of being "self-sufficient" is a mirage. We CAN be as self-reliant as possible, though.
Michigansnowpony Homesteading to most is just a lifestyle. You will not become self sufficient until after the greatest economic collapse in human history.
Agreed, homesteading is mindset / lifestyle many pursue in different forms and degrees. But there are quite a few on youtube, (for example), who appear to be on their homesteads full time without outside jobs. How are they doing that? Is there a plan, formula, or "trick" to being on the homestead full time others could follow and emulate? THAT is the big elephant in the homesteading room everyone ignores and doesn't talk about. It's kinda fascinating to me -- why is such information so secret and apparently, nothing anyone will share / talk about?
I love your videos! You inspired me to get my own homestead started and a UA-cam channel! My channel is about homesteading from the ground up! We are just now going to use the shed we have to make a barn. We are also doing it small scale like you suggested! I love the videos you do on becoming debit free. We currently no longer have any debit other than our home. Once it's paid down some so we could get a good return its land and cabin for us!! Thank you for all the info!!
Becky I love your channel and would be happy to see more food recipe videos I'm sure there are tons of recipes out there in the convenience of your homestead life style hope to see more videos soon!
I just found your videos yesterday and i just want to thank you your videos are very informative me and my wife have decided to start a homestead so we can raise our own food that being said could you do a series on raising pigs from pigglet to butcher i have experience with other animals but not hogs
My whole life I've been drawn to nature and the outdoors. My family raised me in Tulsa Oklahoma and we went on semi-frequent camping, rafting and fishing trips. I always felt in my element out among the trees and I have always been really fascinated with the idea of living off of the land and my own two hands. I suffer from an eye condition called "Optic Nerve Hypoplasia" so maybe its not a logical thing for someone like me to do, so I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of a small town and getting about 5-10 acres of land instead. We had our own garden my entire life as well, so I know a little about plants and how to grow them. Camping and fishing are deeply ingrained in me and I miss doing those things so much. Since my mom got cancer 10 years ago, all fishing. rafting and camping has come to a halt. I also got hypothyroidism so I'm tired a lot if I don't take my medicine. We're going to move to a more rural area regardless, so I'm hoping to learn as much as I can now before we go. I am going to have to re-learn everything I knew growing up. Any tips on where I should start? I love how you say age and size don't matter. I was 108 pounds at 22. at 25 it spiked to 180, the heaviest I'd been in my life. Shortly after is when I found out I had hypothyroidism. I am 35 now and still struggling a little with it but I don't want it to keep me from the great outdoors. I'm a hard worker when I have the energy and I don't plan on giving up on my dreams, I just need to work hard to obtain them. On my last note, Oklahoma seems perfect for picking land. There are springs under the ground everywhere and its not too hot or too cold. I admit I am sensitive to heat, but a jump in the pool helps a lot. What are your thoughts?
Hi Becky, We've just moved to the country to start our own little mini hobby farm. We won't be homesteading at the level you are, but we will be attempting to have that 'simpler' lifestyle. I concur with you regarding the 'starting small' concept. I envision having a few dozen goats, chickens, dogs, whatever... But, we were given 2 goats a few weeks ago (my first goats) and they are a handful. We've now got a good handle on them, but I don't know what I would have done if I got 10 or 20 right off the bat. I'd like to get through a winter with them before getting more. . Just as you do, I love to garden. I got into gardening soo much that we just simply outgrew our home in the suburbs. Congrats on your homestead. Love to hear more from you.
Becky you are amazing , I was a homesteader years ago, had chickens, rabbits geese cheeps goats and cows , the thing was that I felt stuck with so many animals, could never leave the house for a holiday, now I live in the suburbs and I hate it, I want to go back to the country , this time my house will be smaller and I will only have like 4 chickens and a couple of geese's and that will be it! like you I was overweight back then and work my ass off, now I been diagnose with thyroid , have you ever had yours check, it just not normal to be bigger and work like you do, its so not fair .I love your house, I cant wait to built mine , so tired of those big huge suburb houses that are just all alike, I want my personal style house like you
I haven't watch the entire vid yet but wanted to give folks the heads up if you are moving into or near a small town you have to have an income that's not dependent on the local economy . Small towns look out for their own and there are no jobs that can sustain , a lot of people are on disability because they can't make a living in or near small towns. So truck driving is a good one that's not dependent on the local economy , UA-cam channel , online job ( but make sure they have internet services that will sistain an online job.) That's the biggest hurdle I found when moving into the country and it's a must because not having enough money to live on is so stressful. But please think it all out before making the move.
I started looking at garden videos I found out home steading I have been staying up late doing reacher and I love it I want to become a home but I'm oniy 11
You live an awesome life. i hope to some day become a homesteader/farmer. I have no experience but im concerned switching life style with a wife and three kids. Hopefully one day. My wife wants to homestead to.
I'm planning on living in 1.5 acres, have a 15×15 pvc chicken coop, have 7 chickens, live on a 40"school bus as my house, have a small 16’x16’ garden with 2 garden ducks 🦆 and 3 Nigerian dwarf goats 🐐
I started looking at garden videos I found out home steading I have been staying up late doing reacher and I love it I want to become a home but I'm oniy 11 I would die without homesteading
Great video! In your intro I can see that you have goats, but I don't think you have made a video about them. Lots of (great) chicken videos, but none about the goats. Do you still have them, if yes, would you recommend getting them?
I did keep goats for two years and was going to milk them, but decided I want to spend all my extra time working with my mules and not be tied to the milk stand.
We live in a neighborhood in a small town , but we own 4 acres across the service road from us. We just rescued 2 horses from being dog food or glue horses, and they are great! We are letting our horses graze and we don't feed hay or grain because they have enough bushes and grass. Do you have any tips for first time horse owners?
Horses need more than grass and bushes. Horses need to be fed hay all winter. They need to be wormed, they need to have their feet trimmed every two months. Horses need to have their teeth floated every year or so. Always buy the biggest water tank you can afford. I always feed Purina 12/12 horse minerals so they have good strong feet. Horses also need to be groomed (brushed) I would say read everything you can about horses. Horses cost quite a bit of money to take care of. ❤️🐔🐷🐝☀️
Were going to do all of that, but we will not feed grains unless deworming.:) The reason is, when you see mustangs in the wild they are shiny and healthy and beautiful. All they eat is grass. Our friend has horses that only eat grass and they are so beautiful! Shiny, plump, and muscular.:) We just let our horses graze and eat trees or whatever they desire (you know, except plastic and metal LOL). It's kind of like switching your dog to a raw meat diet or a home cooked diet, it is way closer to what they would eat naturally.:) And we are going to either sow winter grass or get hay for them:). For minerals we give them a salt lick, and when worming them we add probiotics. :) Thank you for the tips:) I have been reading up a ton on horses
could u do a video on why our chickens and rooster are not mating cause our hens have been laying eggs since last month there 4 months old now and our rooster is about the same age he is a little older though but can u plz
Ya but there like about half the size of ur chickens and they bean laying eggs since last month just a little last month now they lay every day I'm just so suppressed there so Yung
Hi so I can't decide what I want to be I live in Utah in a small farm Town and I love gardening and raising animals but I visited California and love the big city it had so I don't know what I want to do I'm 13 (kinda young to be thinking about this) any advice. Please reply Thank you
ryan my family and my self live in a small town in utah. raising animals is very rewarding and fun to do. we are in the process of starting our farm makeover. our 11 year old son helps us alot. if you want to check out our channel you might enjoy it where we live in utah as well
All outside animals keep you active but our mules, donkey and pony are the most work. I am a farrier and do their feet myself, that with training, riding, driving, feeding take up quite a bit of time, but for me I love all that!
Everyone has a knack for something, smart people develop it. Some people never figure out what their knack is and other people waste it. To each his own.
I start my own homestead after raising 3 kids from birth till 5,7,8 yrs old.If you can raise humans and keeping them alive for 8 yrs..u can raise n grow anything.....growing plants is easy pz compared to growing human beings...
Did you do this all alone. I hear you say we I would love to do this. Iam a 61 single women and would love to live this way but there is no way I could build my own house Would love to meet a single man to do this with. Lol. Love your Visio's
I've wanted to homestead since forever....before I was born. So, desire isn't the problem. Skills? Got those up the ying yang...could probably show you a ton of tricks for survival and self sufficiency. Believe me. The problem has always been this economy and administrations of this government ruining this country and trying to survive THAT treadmill...paying bills, bills, bills and every other merry go round this world's system imposes. How can ANYONE save a nickle to their name beyond necessities. The rich get richer and the poor just keep getting trod on worse. How, if any of your 'wonderful' cheerful ideas do you plan on surviving the upcoming destined crash of this country's financial and political structure which is destined to happen? Have any backup plans for that? Have you even thought about it, made any plans? This whole global world structure is impending a huge crash...and the problem is the crap really does run downhill....even to homesteaders. I see you aren't solar, or off grid prepared you still are on the grid/wired...what about gas, lp or growing animal feeds, keeping up the taxes or losing the land for non payment of taxes..the government doesn't barter livestock or produce ya know? Where is that supposed to come from? Our money is soon not going to be worth anything once the confidence cracks..as it's worthless now, having no gold or silver behind it. I know people bartered and pooled their rations together during the depression..grew up then..but what's ahead of us now is going to be MUCH worse. I'd like to hear those ideas and plans of how you're going to make it then. I'm still beating my head with the system and trying to save up money to buy some piece of property...even if I have to tent it/homeless..so, I haven't given up any dreams even at my age. It's what's going on elsewhere in the world causing economic and political/greed crashes that scares the hell out of me..and how time is so short. They're choking the american spirit and dream. Think about it..and make a video, want to hear what your thoughts/plans are for that...as its coming faster than you think. It's inevitable..and no government bailouts either coming. Good luck. love your videos...but this is what concerns me now..more so than being in wars...I'm a retired military combat vet and war I have seen much of along with serving under several presidents. I always looked forward to retirement and homesteading..but, naturally I see the whole world going to hell again, and more war ahead/depressions worse than you can possibly imagine, and starvation, homelessness, looting just to survive. How you going to protect your precious homestead then? I admire you...you are still so naive and an innocent baby in the woods. I seem to have lost that a LONG time ago...seeing too much destruction and death in this world.
You can't waste your time thinking about all that, try and focus your energy on simplifying your lifestyle and getting rid of bills. If you keep running around and around on the hamster wheel you will get nowhere. Look for owner finance property and use your tax refund for the down payment. The key is to start small, look for a small place. Believe me they are out there. I started with nothing. I was raised dirt poor but just made up my mind to get my own place.
I hope I have my homestead someday. I'm currently 16 and I've been dreaming of living on my own homestead for years. We’d actually be about the same age now. I have a five year plan for myself, everything I want to do in life! I’m so excited!
Same here I'm 15
How is your dream going?
You really have a way of making things seem simple and attainable, and I appreciate that.

You are so good in front of the camera :)
I love how at 1:14 the chair disappears

I'm planning on living in 1.5 acres, have a 15×15 pvc chicken coop, have 7 chickens, live on a 40"school bus as my house, have a small 16’x16’ garden with 2 garden ducks 🦆 and 3 Nigerian dwarf goats 🐐
Good advice...you are very encouraging...... love your colorful room :)

Awesome. Maybe one day I'll be in your shoes!
I want to live like that in the black hills cause my time line originated there
Becky, is that wall art from Pier 1 Imports?
I started looking at garden videos I found out home steading I have been staying up late doing reacher and I love it I want to become a home but I'm oniy 11 I would die without homesteading
Snivycat SAME I am exactly the same as you I'm only 12 but I also love the idea of homesteading and I want to start one after I finish college.
Becky, did you get another kitty? Would love to see how you rearranged the cabin inside.
Yes Murphy is my new farm cat.

Becky, I love your videos. In the opening, what is the dish you take out of your oven?
It's a cinnamon coffee cake
Enormous
Dear Becky. would you be able to get me the plan of your cabin. thank you
Good life.
Thanks Becky, very encouraging once again... Who is the editor, video person?
Hi Becky,I was wondering what kind of flooring do you have in that room you are in?
Do you have issues with snakes and gators in Floridia
great video .
anil Reddy.
Choose wisely. Do well at 3 things rather than fail at 8. That one sits well with me. Ruminating...
I wish I could convince my husband to do this
We live in a neighborhood in a small town , but we own 4 acres across the service road from us.
But you cannot go for holidays right? So who is gonna look after the animals if u are "on leave"
could u do a video on why our chickens and rooster are not mating cause our hens have been laying eggs since last month there 4 months old now and our rooster is about the same age he is a little older though but can u plz

برنامج رائع 👍
Hi
I would want the type of farm animals that would keep me more active.
All outside animals keep you active but our mules, donkey and pony are the most work. I am a farrier and do their feet myself, that with training, riding, driving, feeding take up quite a bit of time, but for me I love all that!
🙏❤️🙏
The homesteading gift....sounds like skyrim, anyway, thx Becky!
Everyone has a knack for something, smart people develop it. Some people never figure out what their knack is and other people waste it. To each his own.
Becky's Homestead Well Said and 100% True ! :)
Lol. Love your Visio's
karen catalano get someone to build it for you. OR buy a house that has land attached to it.
could you do a video of riding the mules or horses :)
Becket

I’m moving shortly into my own homestead..the first thing I’m going to do is burn my damn bra
Awesome!!!
