They have been playing with the same colored balls for the past 14 racks. Joey was also in last year's US open. This is really sad but I'm sure something he'll look back to and just laugh about. Guy has his whole future ahead of him.
But there is something called sportsmanship. Everyone has made a foul in his career alrrleasldy. Remember SVB playing against Yapp. SVB called no extension. Nevertheless Yapp wrongly told the ref SVB did. This also happed in a tournament. If everyone would be honest, then everyone would get it back someday.

I would have done the same thing except I would have done it on every rack! The 4 has always been the Purple and the 5 has always been Orange! Many years ago before cameras and resolution got to today's standards the Purple 4 was hard to tell apart from the Black 8 on TV so they changed it to Pink, but now if they are going to have a purple ball it needs to go back to being the 4!! maybe just make it a bit lighter shade. I've spent 50 years playing Pool and it is ingrained in my mind that the Purple is the 4!! I watch these matches and see the players playing position for the next ball after the 3 and for a split second I'm thinking man they got terrible shape on the 4 then realize the Pink is the 4!! This is the "US Open" everything should be the Traditional Colors Balls and Cloth!!!
This right here is why they need to stop changing the damn balls. Keep them one color set. The only color changed I liked was the changing of the 3 and 7 because they are close in color but making the 5 purple is stupid.

thats part of the game..thats why there is "foul" rule which one of them is hitting the wrong ball instead in sequence..no obligation of SMB to inform his opponent..

The color change wasnt an issue on the other 7 games he won. No one to blame but himself. He lost track. Ball color change doesn't have anything to do with it. You live, you learn. Its also not SVBs place to say anything either. Its not just any money tournament, its the US OPEN.
I play with normal ball colors, and playing rotation here in the PH I sometimes try to shoot the wrong ball (the spotter usually stops me). I just miss the the next ball and fixate on the next ball up. It’s just a mental error. Not SVB’s place to say anything, nor is it the ref’s place to say anything. Tate just made a mental error in the moment. He took full responsibility for it in an interview with Karl Boyes after the match.
The ref is not allowed to say anything. SVB is allowed but in a big tournament it's understandable if he doesn't. When you play with buddies and drink a beer you should tell your opponent.
Like many have said, it's a mental error... playing a ball out sequence due to pressure / fixation on such an easy ball to followup... Happens to everyone sooner or later. When it's just between friends or practice matches, or playing for the occasional beer, go ahead, tell the opponent they're lining up the wrong ball or making the wrong type of position etc. When you're playing in the big leagues for money, that's your income, and you have no obligation to advise another player what to shoot or how to shoot it... Like one of the other commentors said, would you go over to the other quarterback and say "hey, you're lining up a quarterback sneak, but we already knew that - you should play something else?"...

Apparently, the "traditional" colors you're referring to don't come across well on TV and it can be a little difficult telling some of the colors apart (for the broadcaster and/or the viewer). I prefer the traditional colors, even for TV, but I've seen several different color schemes. He didn't have trouble with knowing which ball to shoot in previous games, he just made a mental mistake here.

The traditional color scheme is: 1 - yellow 2 - blue 3 - red 4 - purple 5 - orange 6 - green 7 - burgundy 8 - black 9 - 15, same as one through 7, but instead of being solid, has a white stripe. See? No pink.

As a player who loves the game, I understand I will make amazingly horrible shots. My best advice for anyone is to brush it off, and look for the next chance to stun your opponent with your brilliance.
Kevin Shane did the right thing. Had he said anything, it would be interference. Joey handled it with amazing class and went on to win his next match. Both should hold their heads high and move on.

No. Under any other scenario where an opponent's attacking line will contact the wrong ball, SVB is within the spirit of the game to say nothing (like a safety where an opponent makes an intentional foul to tie up balls, or a kick shot that will miss/hit the wrong ball and SVB saw them lining it up and KNEW they would miss/hit the wrong ball with that line). Same logic holds up here. Moreover, suppose SVB said something, distracted Joey who then glanced backward and fouled the cue ball with his tip. Which way does the ruling go? Too many variables and "what were his intentions" to muddle through.

Every player that I've seen comment about this, including Joey Tate himself, said that NO player would ever tell their opponent they're on the wrong ball and that if he were in SVB's shoes, he would have kept quiet as well. Especially since this is the US Open. Sportsmanship is one thing, but your opponent fouling due to lack of awareness simply does not fall in the category of sportsmanship. That would be like if in baseball, an outfielder caught the ball thinking it was the 3rd out and tossing the ball in the stands to a fan, only to find out it was only the 2nd out and the runners that were on base are coming around to score... imagine if the opposing runners decided to just stay on their base because it's "good sportsmanship". That would be ridiculous.

Because Matchroom decided to make the 5 ball purple when the 4 ball has always been purple. No need to reinvent the wheel especially in the US Open.

In the game 8Ball Pool, the #4 is Purple. Don't know why it's changed here in this 9 ball version of the game. It should be fixed.

I always say good luck to my opponent after the lag, but if they beat me as a result of luck, it stings like a scorpion.
I say “shoot well” now for that very reason. Rather lose to good shooting than shithouse luck

It's 100 percent his fault. On TV we were used to pink 4 balls so the supplier of the balls chose to make the 5 purple instead of pink.
